"The next step is to pay the retainer, and then file and wait for response, then meet to discuss strategy" Apparently they want me to just go ahead and sign papers and write a check without every having talked to the lawyer - no thanks.

I suspect people expect boutique/expensive legal help on a MetLife legal budget. Clients won't be wined and dined at a golf course here, but they will be served well. I found the firm a great value and the outcome exceeded my expectations. Elizabeth and Toni were particularly helpful. I've had a great experience, and they were able to resolve a vehicle insurance issue for me (insurance didn't want to cover costs of a random debris collision). They were patient during the very long process, and kept me informed along the way. I wasn't a fan of the portal since I would rather just text or Email but I understand the portal is to protect privacy. I'd happily use them again, but I hope I don't need to.

My case took much longer than I expected and became increasingly frustrating. I initially spoke with Deborah R. only once. After that, Rebekka T. began communicating with me and repeatedly requested additional paperwork and information. I called the office and spoke with Maria V., who was very kind and helpful. I explained that I thought I was working directly with Deborah, and Maria told me that was no longer the case. Unfortunately, when I later tried to contact Maria again, I was told that she no longer worked there. Throughout my case, I was repeatedly asked for more and more paperwork and information, resulting in additional billable time. I found myself spending a significant amount of time going back and forth providing personal information and answering questions that I felt had already been addressed. Ultimately, I incurred a large legal bill, which I paid, but I felt that I had very little to show for the amount of time and money spent. Then I began receiving communication from Andrea L., who said she was assisting Rebekka. She called me and asked many of the same questions I had already answered for Deborah and Rebekka. This was particularly difficult because, at the time, I was dealing with serious health issues and undergoing chemotherapy. I was exhausted and not feeling well, and repeatedly having to revisit sensitive personal information was extremely stressful. I also received a bill listing Andrea L. as a senior attorney and charging me for one hour. I had documented the telephone conversation, and my records showed that the call lasted approximately 22 minutes. I became concerned when I noticed that the phone number associated with Andrea had a Georgia area code. I researched her credentials because I wanted to understand why I was being charged a senior attorney rate. At the time, I was unable to find a California license for her and found information indicating that she was an attorney based in Georgia. I questioned Rebekka about why I was being charged a senior attorney fee for this time and asked for clarification. She offered to discount the bill, which she did. I also copied Deborah R. on my email because she was the attorney I originally believed I was working with. Rebekka responded that I was her client and did not need to discuss the matter with anyone else. I found that response concerning, particularly given my questions about who was handling my case and how I was being billed. Eventually, I decided I needed to find another attorney. Finding a real estate attorney who was willing and able to take on my complicated case was not easy. Fortunately, I found a different real estate attorney who was compassionate, responsive, and communicated directly with me. He immediately reviewed my situation and explained that we could resolve the matter without going to court and unnecessarily increasing attorney fees. The difference in my experience was remarkable. He was determined, honest, considerate, and gave me peace of mind knowing that my case was being handled properly. He ultimately helped bring the matter to a successful conclusion. I am sharing my experience not to discourage anyone from making their own decision, but to encourage people to ask questions before hiring an attorney: Who will actually be handling your case? Who will be communicating with you? What billing rates will apply? And who exactly is being billed for the work? When you are already dealing with a difficult legal situation and especially when you are dealing with serious personal circumstances. You need an attorney who communicates clearly, treats you with compassion, and gives you confidence that your case is being handled carefully. I had an extremely disappointing experience with Elan J. Dunaev / EJD Law Group, and based on my…read morepersonal experience, I would not recommend him. I hired Mr. Dunaev for an urgent construction-defect, insurance, and surety matter involving serious safety and code issues at my home. I ultimately paid approximately $8,000 in connection with this representation and the related fee dispute/arbitration outcome. I hired an attorney because I needed real legal strategy, urgency, insurance/surety pressure, and protection for my family and home. In my opinion, I did not receive anything close to the level of service or value I expected. What I mainly received was a representation letter, one demand letter, and billing for reviewing emails. One of the most frustrating things was that, after weeks of asking for surety action, the demand letter to the surety was not the focused, effective demand I expected. In my view, it did not meaningfully move the matter forward or reflect the full context and urgency of the situation. I also felt that during communications involving the liability insurance side, Mr. Dunaev mostly just listened or reviewed emails without asking the kinds of questions I expected an attorney to ask. To me, it felt like he was more of a silent observer than an advocate. I did not hire a lawyer to simply read emails after charging thousands of dollars. I hired a lawyer to understand the case, ask hard questions, build strategy, apply pressure, and protect me. One of the most upsetting parts for me was that communications occurred with the contractor side about the contractor potentially returning to the property or resuming work. That was not the strategy I wanted, and I do not understand why communications about that issue occurred while I was paying for legal representation, especially when I did not want that approach. This was not a minor disagreement for me. Based on my records and my experience, the contractor was later subject to a two-year restraining order after a threat involving a gun against my family. Given that context, I still do not understand why my attorney would communicate with the contractor side or entertain the possibility of the contractor returning to my property instead of focusing on protecting me, pursuing insurance/surety pressure, and building an enforcement strategy. After the representation ended, I had to move the matter forward myself. I pursued the CSLB complaint, contacted LADBS, contacted OSHA, built the written safety/code record, pursued insurance and surety issues, served discovery, prepared motion work, and continued the civil case myself. Those are exactly the kinds of legal and enforcement steps I expected my attorney to help lead. For the amount I paid, I expected legal judgment, strategy, urgency, insurance/surety pressure, and meaningful action. Instead, I felt I received mostly email-review billing, a basic representation letter, and one demand letter that did not move the case in the way I needed. In my opinion, the work did not justify the fee. I felt unsupported, unprotected, and left to build and advance the case myself. Based on my experience, I would not hire this attorney again.

This guy cannot think strategically at all and his brain works on randoms details. He did not know the judge we were assigned to and could not communicate to him in a manner that Judge could understand. His understanding of Business matters is poor and he could not communicate the issues involved in valuing a business or anything complex regarding assets. He was unorganized and refused to make outlines for court presentations and just shot from the hip each day - What a mess!! He does not prepare any of his own law and motion and just presented his underlings work in court without really knowing the issues. His law and motion guy was good and I requested that he take over the trial but Jason refused to stand aside and continued to bumble. Find someone else!

I hired Boyd Law for a single Request for Order regarding my adult daughter's support arrears and…read moreattorney's fees. The total bill came to approximately $18,000. At the hearing where I appeared alone, because I could no longer afford to keep paying for representation, the judge described that amount as the most outrageous fee she had ever heard for a single RFO, and awarded me $0 in fees. She embarrassed and humiliated me by speaking about it over and over again. After the hearing, I raised these concerns directly with the firm. Matthew Cadwell reviewed the billing and told me the time spent was in line with what he'd seen in other matters, but acknowledged there was some time they could credit back. He offered a $500 courtesy credit, which I accepted. That was over a week ago. I've heard nothing since, and the credit was never processed. I also want to note that it was my attorney at the firm who told me, partway through this case, that I should go forward on my own rather than continue paying, since their continued involvement wouldn't necessarily change the outcome and he could not guarantee attorney's fees would be recovered. So when Matthew later suggested the result might have been different if the firm had been present at the hearing, that was hard to hear relative to what I had already been told by my attorney. For five months, my ex-husband contributed nothing toward our daughter's support. I paid this firm roughly $18,000 to get one court order, for which he still hasn't complied with the payment schedule on time, and hasn't complied with a second order to disclose trust information either. I liquidated retirement funds, incurred tax penalties, and took on credit card debt to cover the gap in the meantime. this entire experience has been nothing short of awful, and yet I believe I was doing the only thing available to me since nothing else I tried had worked. I can't recommend this firm due to all that has transpired. I am left feeling angry, disappointed, and embarrassed by all that transpired.
