As an Asian American, I've had to deal with a lot of weirdness living in FR. This includes French people not being able to wrap their heads around the fact that I am American. (The assumption is that I hail from Asia because of the way my face looks.) The other weirdness I deal with living here is only being able to find Asian food that is a melange of whatever the French deem palatable and trendy. Also nems (Vietnamese egg rolls) have become integrated in French food culture; you can find them in boxes of 4-6-8 casually sitting in a cooler at every supermarket. (Very strange yet I suppose not, considering their history of colonizing VN.) That said, I had one of the better bowls of bo bun here. Which is distinctly Vietnamese; I can feel my blood rise each time I read a review of a misguided French person refer to it as Thai. The French are obsessed with fixed menus. Even if you don't feel like an appetizer or dessert, you feel strange ordering a la carte. Mostly because the cost difference is so small, you literally can't justify it. Just get the menu (appetizer, dessert or both), and deal with the consequences of gaining unnecessary weight later. Rant cut short- if you're looking for a solid Asian-esque meal at a reasonable cost in a trendy atmosphere in le centre ville de Rennes, this is where it's at.

But coming from LA where I'm accustomed to really quality and inexpensive Asian food, it's been a harsh reality experiencing anything outside of this. Whenever my husband and I are in the area, we try to stop by and grab lunch or dinner. Bo bun and pho bo are our usual go-tos. Maybe not the best we've had but it's still good enough for us, and we are in the biz of supporting small and earnest enterprises.

We googled Vietnamese food and le Mekong came up, so before even looking at the menu, i thought, yeah mekong is definitely vietnamese. Well it's definitely everything BUT vietnamese! LOL, known for their cambodian, thai, and laos food. I believe the owners were cambodia. My go to authenticity of the restaurant is if the kitchen speaks the native language, and it did! After some guessing and pointing at random french translated vietnamese food we got 2 orders of pho, fried dumplings, rice, grilled shrimp skewers with vermicelli, and chino beef. The beef was very similar to bo luc lac and the Pho was appetizer size but totally hit the spot. They had the smallest meatballs too. Wash everything down with 2 singhas and the shakes finally disappeared! This place is adorably-- family owned, authentic, food came out fast and everything was delicious. Yay!

The owner of this restaurant is Chinese, and the cook is Chinese too, so the restaurant is authentic. Many Chinese restaurants in France are run by Vietnamese who don't even speak Chinese. We made friends with the owner, he is a very nice and memorable guy. Price of 12.40 Euro for 3 dishes is very reasonable for France, where dishes are typically 6-15 Euro. I highly recommend this restaurant.
