The Sele (pronounced 'Seal', yep I made that mistake first time too...) is a lovely park sitting in…read morethe centre of Hexham, just behind Hexham Abbey. A superb space, lots to do for all the family - the park has an open area (great for dogs!) with a big hill that provides some great views over the Abbey and Market Place, a football pitch, a Grade II-listed bandstand (donated to the town in 1912, fact fans), a bowling green (Hexham House Bowls Club), a skate/BMX park for the big kids, a playground for the little kids. You will often find people taking a pleasant walk around the perimeter, it's ideal for joggers and fitness fanatics - I go to bootcamp here at least twice a week, believe me, exercising in such a lovely setting is a million times better than any gym. Even if you do get funny looks from passers-by... The Sele is also the location of the annual Hexham Bonfire organised by the Hexham Round Table, a real spectacular charity fundraising evening of fireworks and a giant bonfire! A wonderful space to enjoy some fresh air in any season, but especially at this time of now the weather's picking up and the first flowers are coming up. If you have a spare moment in Hexham, can't think of many better places to make the most of that moment.

In winter people used to build igloos and snowmen at the top of the hill (the snowmen would later be pushed down the hill in snowmen races by teenagers). When I was really young there was a day each year that all the kids of Hexham were given chalk and would "paint" the pavements of the Sele with anything they wanted. I only remember how fun this was, and how pretty it all looked. It's sad they stopped that now. My friend broke her leg here when she hit the goalposts sledging (don't let your brother guide the sledge). We planted trees down by the brook when we were in primary school, then we messed around down there as teens. Seriously, when I grew up there wasn't really much else to do in town. The Sele was it. Well Donnies was still a big deal back in those days too. It's good for kids, good for teens and has lots of places you can dump bottles etc. if necessary. If you come to Hexham you must come to the Sele, Mostly cause there's not much else to do.

Then a few games (google them) 'hidey', 'tag'. 'Chuck stones' Do you remember 'kick the tin'! Hours of fun and running about but also keeping close enough not to worry. The main attraction is definitely the beautiful and secluded lake that provides a lovely walk and ample benches for soaking up the sunshine. This also proves popular with runners and fisherman! Great for wildlife but be careful of the birds as they can be overly protective when they have chicks. If you're looking for a tranquil haven away from the city centre then this is perfect. Multiple green spaces for lounging around or having a barbecue as well as having tennis courts,a basketball court and a bowling green. It is usually the venue of choice for certain summer events too like gay pride and the Newcastle green festival.

This park is very popular for runners. There are four tennis courts and a basketball court. There is a playground for children as well, which makes it popular for families. The best feature of this park is the pond.

There is a small car park with a visitors centre. It cost £2.50 to park the car, payable in the shop. The walk around the lake (2km) is a well made footpath suitable for wheel chairs with a number of well built hides perched around the lake & other wetland areas, all accessible to wheel chairs also. Well worth a visit, ideal for children. Dogs allowed but kept on lead.

It has a range of play equipment for children and benchs for accompanying adults to sit and watch/chat. There's two sets of swings, one for younger children and one for older children. A big boat provides climbing opportunities and a slide and fireman's pole as well as imaginative play being the captain of the boat. There's an assortment of climbing equipment for older children as well as a baby giraffe slide, little swing and playhouse for very little ones on a softer, squidgy surface. The park is well used but the equipment is frequently covered with grafitti, a complete shame. It occasionally suffers from vandalism and then the repairs can take a while, leaving the equipment cordoned off. It's a nice place to take children but could be better maintained.

There is a small cafe & gift shop, Iv not used the cafe so cannot comment. Toilets are available in the same vicinity & a rather large pay & display car park, £3 all day. One circuit of the park is about a mile on good walking paths, just watch out for goose poop. Ideal for wheelchair users. Keep an eye out for the wicker Gruffalo! Now bring my granddaughter to feed birds from her hand!
