As someone who adores animals I generally have a love/hate relationship with zoos. I love seeing…read morewild animals close up but feel a sense of inner turmoil that they are cooped up in cages. Having said that, I have visited a quite frankly bizarre number of zoos all over the world. Here's a short summary of the high/lowlights; Edinburgh Zoo is my "local" and is very good, Portugal Zoo is horrendous and depressing and Berlin Zoo is the best zoo I have ever visited in the whole wide world (so far)! The queue outside this zoo was huuuuuuge but it was well worth the hour long wait to get in. There was a man selling huge, fresh, warm pretzels to the gathered masses and another entertaining impatient children with a bubble blowing machine. Once you enter the zoo it gets straight into the good stuff. There's none of this faffing about with flamingos and such. The first animals I saw were hippos and elephants, awesome!! The enclosures are big and open which is reassuring. Generally there were just low electric fences separating you from the animals. I saw loads of animals I had never seen or even heard of before. There were also so many baby animals too which everyone loves to see. Luckily I was by the big cats enclosure at feeding time and saw the baby lions, tigers and cheetahs getting stuck into juicy steaks! A truly magical moment! The petting zoo is fun and the attached Aquarium is a tourist site in it's own right. It's huge and not only has sea life but also a ridiculous amount of reptiles, amphibians and creepy crawlies! The zoo restaurants are pretty good as far as these things go and there's plenty of little stall selling ice-creams and drinks dotted around the place. It was raining and crazy busy on the day we went but that didn't stop us having a great time. If you get fed up of all the historical sites in Berlin and fancy a bit of light relief then definitely consider giving this zoo a visit. Just stick on a pac-a-mac if it looks like there will be rain!

They have a large variety of animals in tanks that are clearly too small for them. While visiting,…read morethe sharks were circling in a tank a the corner on the first floor, the tank couldn't have been bigger than a 20m x 20m x 3m box with nothing in there except them 3 and an occasional rock. In all of the jellyfish tanks there were multiple dead jellyfish floating around with the live ones. Not only is it relatively hard to kill a jellyfish, but they showed absolutely no initiative to clean the dead ones out, which can lead to more of them dying in the process. I came to see an octopus, but the pathetic conditions that I had seen on the ground floor discouraged me to go further inside.
