We ate in and asked for some assistance, which they were happy to give, albeit they were surprised to see us in their shop. Anyway, we ate, and went to pay, and noticed a sign that said "less for cash".. so when they went to calculate my meal and rounded up, I made them do it again to get the right price.. and when they did I said "and what about this?" I was paying with cash.. that's when they pretended to not know what I was talking about and no further discount was offered to us. I guess I wasn't Pakistani enough? So, overall I'm not rushing to go back there even though the food was good, I just don't have anything to compare it to.

The ambiance, interior fitout and service are excellent - we ordered a selection of dishes to share between us, and it was great to sample a wide variety of dishes. I would go back just to have that :P This is definitely on our list of places to come back to next time we're in Melbourne!!

They do set specials - rice and choice of 2 curries for $7.50 (or $7.80? Less than $8). At one point, they seem to have toned down on the spicy-ness of some of my favourite curries, much to my disappointment. However, when we went back recently, they were back to how we like it - strong flavours with that spicy kick. Love the chickpea curry paired with the lamb briyani- highly recommended. Tastes even better the day after (as with most curries). Portions are huge, which is a plus point for me as I takeaway what's leftover for my lunch/dinner the next day . Hey! Won't say 'no' to curry two days in a row. Great garlic naan too.

Ziyka serves both Pakistani and Indian food but as the owners are Pakistani it makes no sense to order the usual indian dishes. The menu is extensive with so many to choose from that you must try some Pakistani cuisine. My friend and I ordered the chicken bharta which was large pieces of chicken in a peppery yoghurt gravy with fresh capsicum and onion Very peppery and mild. But delicious. The lamb saag with its creaminess and peppery flavour was definitely a winner. The garlic naan were super buttery with a massive helping of fresh mince garlic. So many strong flavours Table service is provided. Take away options available too.

The Uyghur's are a Turkic ethnic group that live mainly in Eastern China....so Uyghur food is an unusual combination of Turkish-Chinese food. And it happens that there is a small group of Uyghurs living in Melbourne and this is their go to restaurant! Dolan Uyghur Food Heaven is a total hole in the wall. I mean a total hole in the wall, it is not shiny and new, it is not even that clean. It's the sort of place you walk by dozens of time without giving the slightest thought of walking in. Luckily a co-worker of mine had been before and insisted we give it a go during my last trip down to Melbourne. But, wow, what a cool find. Huge portions of food at very reasonable prices. Be warned though...when they say something is spicy, it is spicy! Damn was some of those dishes packed on the heat! The standout dishes were some of the homemade noodle options (see pics), though we also had some braised meat dishes that were served on giant pancakes (hard to explain, the closest thing I've had before was Ethiopian cuisine) that were quite tasty. There you have it...looking for an undiscovered divey gem in Melbourne? Love spicy food? Then head to Dolan Uyghur Food Heaven and you will indeed be in Uyghur Heaven.

But you can get here by tram. One tram heading straight out of the city could get you up to Coburg in under an hour, and in my later youth I took one such afternoon to do this. Not because I wanted to go, but simply because I had run out things to do. The magic that I did find was tucked behind several shops in the Coburg shopping strip. Near the larger supermarkets stands a shop with signage aging away from it's black painted backing. Beneath the letterforms sit people enjoying the sunshine of the late morning or early afternoon. Inside there is much bustling about. Much bustling about baked Mediterranean goods. The winner here is the safe staple of the Spinach and Cheese Pie. They call it a pie, but really it's a pastry using pizza dough. Magical melted cheese and hot spinach come from it as you bite in, many sitting down to enjoy the wonder of it all. The place also serves as a shop, selling many staples for you to make your own Mediterranean magic at home. Their sweets and coffee selection is also not to be missed. Very affordable and very very wonderful.
