Everyone in the very large class was very well disciplined, polite, helpful and very down to earth This is the telltale signs of being trained by one of the best in the martial arts My daughter and son have both trained in various arts since very young but they had no idea who Dan Inasanto was until the night before I brought them to a class then they were reciting all of Dan's accolades To me in the car ride to the Academy Once they enter the class I expected them to get totally lost because there were several different levels of students in the class , But not only did Guru Dan spend time working with both my children but other students of higher level assisted them and made sure they felt comfortable and fell right into line The class was run masterfully in my opinion, Though we had to depart to the airport the next morning my children asked when we could relocate so that they can train further in the Academy I can go on forever, but my family and I would like to thank Guru Dan and all the students and employees that welcomed my children to class and did such a great job making the greatest martial arts experience for them! And my sincerest apologies for taking so long to get this review written.

I've been studying and training under the instruction of Guro Mark Mikita for over 7 years now and…read moreit has been one of the best decisions of my life. As a Filipino American, it has also been an honor to learn the martial art of my ancestors. When I first came to check out the school, during a class, I knew from listening and watching him teach the students that he was extremely knowledgeable. His grasp on Filipino Martial Arts is by far the most advanced you will find in the Greater LA area if not the world, which has even brought visitors to the school as far as Chile, Brazil, England and Sweden just to learn from him. He is not only an expert in Filipino Martial Arts, but has knowledge in all forms of martial arts after having dedicated his whole life to learning and teaching. If you really want to learn Filipino Martial Arts and how to effectively protect yourself then this is the school for you.

Former student here, really had to sitback and gather my thoughts…read more First thing I want to say is that the only reason i'm a former student is because i moved away and that's literally the only reason why. There are many systems and people out there that tout that their art, style, system will be what you need to build your mind, body and sometimes soul for self defense. Many say they're the only one you need - their way, their dogma - is the only one that's right. Other teachers believe to cross train and seek out differing styles and beliefs but melding them is very difficult without a foundation for right and wrong. If someone is telling you that one school is the greatest thing since sliced bread, question it. That's the one thing I've learned with guro Mark. Ask questions, refine asking questions, get better at it. Apply what you learn to a singular purpose and dont be afraid to question it and change it from what you learned. This school is special and that is not something you as a potential student should take lightly. You wont be spoon fed what you seek. You will not be treated special for who you are outside this school. If you think you have the skills (esp if youre a dude) be ready and open to be proven wrong and be even more ready to having your mind opened to being better. I still ruminate over the lessons ive leaned here. They are my rubric for who i want to be as a fighter and as a person. They arent die hard, iron clad, unchangeable tenets. They make me think, they make me question, they make me come back to them. I learned it from all the things ive experienced as a student of martial arts but i got *better* at questioning them at this school. I will come back, i dont know how but i'm working to do so. When I do, I will see how much i've missed and how much i need to learn. But when i do i will find the right tutelage and refinement again at this school and with this family. I hope you come in knowing that this place is special but not know exactly *how* special it is. You only earn that *first* real aha moment once here when you keep trying and put your ego aside to get there. Where you first think, "man, i can do this". We all did at this school and from there you want to find those moments more. Do it here.

Was looking around for months for a solid MMA gym and tried a few different ones and this one…read moreeasily was the best. Also the price is very fair and the instructors are amazing. They know you are new and will help guide you with your first steps. It takes a little time to adjust to the routine and what the training is like but you will easily get a rhythm if you show up consistently. They want you to come back and they want you to improve. Also They let you try out the gym before you sign on. They have lots of gym equipment in here as well so there is no need to pay extra for another gym membership just to lift weights. It's like a playground, you can come in and lift weights, you can practice on the bags and get better or you can take the different classes they offer all under one roof.

I'll let the vids speak for itself lol…read more Uprise was my first gym ever. It's been two years and I've loved every minute of it. This gym changed my life!! There's so much I could say about Pete and this gym- but to keep a long story short- I'm grateful I ended up here of all places. I was 21 and new to LA. I've struggled with weight all my life and wanted to find something to keep in shape. Thought I was going to boxing, ended up in Jiu Jitsu. I was the only girl, which can be scary. But Pete was super welcoming and treated me very equal to the guys and believed in me. I fell in love with the sport and did everything day and night- MMA, muay thai, bjj. Pete believes in people and CARES about his fighters. He's a very genuine and honest person, and his leadership trickles down into the culture. He's very much a life teacher in many ways and loves his analogies lol. I've learned so much about not just fighting, but life and the martial arts ways. Like I said, Pete and this gym has changed my life. 10/10 one of the best things that's ever happened to me!!
