Pompano Beach was incorporated in 1908. You can find the building for the historical society in Founders Park. The Historical Society holds many events in the city. I recently took their historical bus tour that began in the Kester Cottages in Founders Park and for two hours visited historical buildings in the city including the Bailey Hotel which now houses the BaCA Art Center in downtown, the Ali Building, the Sample McDougald House, and the Hillsboro Lighthouse Museum. Tours are $15 and the next one is March 9th. The Historical Society also runs the Pompano Green Market Saturday mornings across from City Hall. The market hearkens back to Pompano's roots as a farming community. Another event they are holding is the annual progressive dinner on February 20th which hosts a three course meal at three different historic sites in the city. The historical society also hosts lectures and public programs. They are currently seeking donations to refurbish the 1930's mule plow that resides in front of the Kester cottages. With so many great events the Historical Society truly offers something for everyone. You can sign up to volunteer, donate money, or see their schedule of events on their website.

We met our guide, Steve, at "The Greek Joint Kitchen & Bar." We started our eating there with warm bread accompanied by seasoned dipping olive oil, tzatziki on cucumber, and Greek-style pork ribs with lemon roasted potatoes. Next was "My Favorite Spot," an Asian fusion eatery that sports custom food bowls. We were served a chicken bowl, with a tray of 8 sauces to chose from, a garlic shrimp, and a queso frito. Our third stop was at "ChileLimon" where we had meat tacos on the best corn tortillas. Along with the savory item we sipped margaritas and coconut lemonade (for the non-alcoholic drinkers). Then we headed to "Verocca Sweet & Salty House" where we had (salty) empanadas and alfajors (sweet sandwich cookies). I guess the empanadas are supposed to be salty (hence the name of the eatery), but they were too salty for me. Others in the group liked them. We all loved the (dulce de leche, guava, nut) sandwich cookies. Our final stop was "Chocolada," where we each chose one dessert and a cookie but took them home because we were too full to eat anymore. During the walk from place to place, Steve regaled us with some history about the city of Hollywood and pointed out a few interesting spots. It was definitely an enjoyable and memorable experience.

This one stuck out to us since we wanted to visit the Everglades, but wanted a tour type thing, and we also didn't want to spend an entire day there - a half day sounded perfect to us. We booked with them through the concierge and they made it super easy. They pick you up from your hotel at your given time and voila! Tour time! Since we booked through the hotel we also trusted the company more - I mean the hotel wouldn't send us off with some crazy people right?!? The guy that picked us up from the hotel, I believe was the owner. He was a character and personable guy. He proceeded to pick up the rest of the attendees at their hotels. Once we had the whole bunch of tourists we switched buses with a different driver. He was nice as well and pointed out some things to us on our 45 minute drive to the Everglades Park. Seems like this tour is the middle man between the hotel and the Everglades Holiday Park. They pick you up, take you by bus to the park, drop you off, and they include a souvenir photo. By the time we headed back to our hotels we were all kind of tired and the driver put on the show Gator Boys from Animal Planet to watch. The show is filmed at the park we visited and we met one of them so we felt almost invested in watching this show now. I don't think I'll ever watch it again but it was something to do one our long drive back. Overall I would highly recommend if you are at a hotel and don't have a car. If you have a car of your own I might suggest looking into boat tour times at the park itself, drive yourself there, and bypass this company. But if you're a tourist like me, then I would highly recommend!

We were picked up promptly from our hotel and Joshua was our driver. He gave a great talk on…read morealligators and crocodiles and then showed us a few videos for the 40 minute ride out to the park. Once we arrived at the park, Joshua handled everything and got us to the boat. During the boat ride we saw several species of birds and even got within a foot of two swimming gators. Captain Jeremy was knowledge and was a great storyteller. The boat was FAST (twin Cadillac engines) and it got us to the good alligator watching spots quickly. The folks back at the park gave us our included photo and then took us to the gator wrestling show. That was exciting and informative and we were up close to the action. There were 15 live gators in the enclosure during the show. After the show, we got the included photo holding a baby alligator and our son loved that. The gift shop had a nice variety and prices were reasonable. After the show Joshua got us back to our hotel swiftly and safely. What more could one ask for? So, hopped on the maps, and saw this as an 'Everglades Tour'. While you can visit the park and pay for everything out of pocket, I highly recommend booking ahead of time for the tours through Al, of Alligator Tours. After making a reservation, the site prompts you to call and confirm your pickup location. Do this with plenty of time, as there's 4 dedicated locations but they change based on different conditions. Al is super responsive via Text. He is nice, and an amazingly gregarious person. He arrived 5-15 minutes early, had a great shpeal about the adventures ahead. During the bus ride, he plays some "Gator Boys", an educational and fun Animal Planet channel show that references the park. At the park, we had an amazing time. It was busy, but Al did great hitting the major attractions. Because it was busy, he changed some of the order to make sure we never really dealt with a crowd. Photos with the Baby Alligator were amazing He was so soft and calm. My girlfriend and I have a souvenir, that was honestly waaaaay cheaper($) than any other photo I've had. On the airboats, we had Chaos as our Captain. He was an amazingly good pilot, and had fantastic skill at finding Alligators in the wild. He was super funny, and definitely one of the best pilots at top speed. NOTE - if you want a more docile pilot, look somewhere else! Afterwards, we saw an Amazing Alligator wrestling show with the star of the Gator Boys, Paul. Don't worry, there is no animal violence! Paul demonstrates love, compassion, and fearless respect, and helps teach the audience an appreciation for what is incorrectly named 'nuisance gators'. The boat captains, as well as Paul's rescue all run off of tips. Bring cash to help show appreciation in the moment - it goes a long way. Al wrapped up the trip by getting us all on the road on time, and even navigated around traffic as an expert Floridian to get us all back to our hotels safely. All in all, I would come back to Florida just to do this tour again.

Best time to go is when the air is a bit chilly as the water temp was at 104 and the jets were soooo relaxing. Each hot tub has its own sounds system so you can play whatever you want and the crew is very attentive. They came by the tub and pointed out some of the buildings and yachts, giving us info on the area. The ambience is surreal and a definite must for date night.
