I loved my dentist in DC, and was very hesitant to seek a new one. Even considered driving three hours to continue seeing my DC dentist! I went to a local dentist, and they were OK, but nothing stood out. I drive by Kessler Dental fairly frequently, and after looking them up, I made an appointment. I was greeted very warmly, given welcome gifts, and a tour of the office. I'm a speech-language pathologist with my own practice, so I am very sensitive and in tune to the details of how practitioners run their business. I Diane was my Dental Hygienist, and she was phenomenal! I was immediately at ease, and we worked together to figure out what was going on with my mystery cavities. Then Dr. Kessler arrived, and she sat, talked with Diane and myself, and I felt part of an even bigger team! Everyone took their time with me, and I NEVER felt rushed or that I was just another patient. Then Dominique, one of their treatment coordinators, helped me with a fantastic breakdown of services and out of pocket costs after insurance, leaving me with literally no questions!! Get a second opinion before getting multiple crowns from them. I should've read yelp reviews instead of google. Don't let them gaslight you into painful procedures when you have no pain, in the name of being "proactive". In retrospect I can't believe I let that happen to me repeatedly until my insurance declined excessive crowns that were unnecessary. That was truly a wake up call. I had 2 separate dental offices confirm that I have healthy teeth and need no crowns. I especially deeply regret one painless tooth that I let them put a crown on, which proceeded to have cold sensitivity afterward, and even though there was no infection, they sold me on a root canal which will remove nerves so I won't feel anything. They aggressively called me in the weeks after the visit and I stupidly relented. I now have a root canal infection and need extraction and implant. I went along with the nonsense for far too long because I previously had a pay-more-for-better mind set. Now money is not even the worst part of it. They did not just upsell bells and whistles cares that are nice-to-have and just bad values; they sold invasive procedures that were detrimental to my health. read more

I went there. I went for teeth cleaning. They take x ray first. Then they check gap in between teeth. Then they showed me the picture I put. And said I need to pay $372 out of pocket and "if I don't do this I am not there customer". That's what Joe said to me. Then I cancelled my wife's and son appointment. I would not recommend Kessler Dental. I have had to go back numerous times to get work fixed and have only been a patient for less than six months. I have also asked for a treatment plan of any work needed and it has taken numerous calls, in person visits, and texts and I still have yet to receive it. The staff is very friendly in person. The office itself makes you comfortable during your treatment, but the administrative side has been difficult to deal with and allow myself to know what I am fully going to need. The hours are difficult. They have claimed multiple times they don't do afternoon (3pm or later) appointments for certain work despite not closing until after 7 some nights. The practice dismissed me as a patient and refused to continue my routine periodontal care because I did not want to have my restorative work done there. This is an honest review...I am 70+ and someone that has 2 dental checkups a year. I moved to PA and was in need of a new dentist. I was going to my previous dentist for over 35 years with no gum or tooth issues. The first thing Dr. Kessler did was take extensive x-rays even though my previous dentist sent them x-rays from less than a year ago. When I questioned this, she stated no charge for them and she doesn't use "old" x-rays. The hygienist claimed I had significant gum issues and tried to upsell me an oral cancer screening, when I declined she tried to sell me a tooth whitening, I declined. She then said I grind my teeth and needed a mouthguard, I told her I already have one that was fitted by my previous dentist. She then attempted to sell me a Waterpic, again I declined...this was starting to get old and annoying. When Dr. Kessler started to check my mouth the upselling started again. Now she was claiming I needed a "deep cleaning" and 2 crowns, no way, no how. I took photos of the teeth in question and sent them to my friend, a Harvard U graduate, holder of several patents and practiced dentistry for over 40 years, plus his wife is a Columbia U retired dentist. I sent them the photos of the teeth and my previous periodontal exam, he stated there was absolutely no need for crowns, both teeth were in excellent condition for someone my age and the periodontal exam for the "deep Cleaning " is definitely a scam. He quoted "RUN, don't walk away from this dental office, all they want to do is upsell the patient unnecessary services, crowns, etc." I would not recommend this dental office or Dr. Kessler. In addition, my wife had an unnecessary crown put in and phony periodontal treatments for over $2000 from Kessler and her scamming tactics, this was substantiated by another dentist that she recently went to. Went here a while back and completely regretted it. Never had a cavity in my life but they pushed me for X-rays every time I went in. Like I need the radiation. Seemed like a total money grab. This was by far the worst experience I have had in any medical facility in my life. The practitioners make you feel comfortable with amenities lists, positive demeanors, and pleasant aesthetics, but I cannot express how strongly I believe that you need run -- not walk -- away from this unethical and profit motivated medical practice. I barely know where to begin with this review! TLDR: This dentist pushed unnecessary treatment, was misleading about billing and costs, was unclear about procedure plans, and took way too long to do simple procedures. Additionally, I ended up with a severe lip infection following my appointment. First of all, I believe they push unnecessary treatment to turn a profit. They told me I had 7 cavities. I only got a few of those filled here on the right side of my mouth. After an AWFUL experience that I will detail later in this review, I sought second and third opinions for the left side of my mouth. Both of those dentists were surprised that anyone had made that assessment and told me, definitively, that I had only one cavity on the left side of my mouth. Prior to getting these fillings, they pushed an expensive treatment for my gums, which I did pursue. I would put money on most other dentists claiming that this was unnecessary as well. Second of all, I do not believe they were transparent about their procedure plans. The dentist mentioned "I would need a few fillings on the right side of my mouth." While an "onlay," which is a partial crown, was mentioned in my billing documentation, I, who had never experienced a filling before, assumed that an "onlay" referred to a type of basic filling. Not ONCE did someone say the term "partial crown" to me until I was already in the chair being numbed for the procedures. If someone had said the words "partial crown" to me before this day, I would have gotten a second opinion then and there, no question. While I recognize that I have a responsibility as a consumer to do my research, I also believe that medical practitioners have an ethical responsibility to be as clear as possible in their treatment plans that significantly impact their patients' lives. Even when they did tell me that day, I asked if the dental hygienist could walk me through what a partial crown procedure entailed. She informed me that, "it's not much different than a filling." I was shocked when I moved my tongue to that tooth midway through the procedures and realized I barely had any tooth left! Thirdly, I believe that I was there FAR too long to receive 2 fillings and a partial crown. I was there for over 3 and a hours and left alone for long spans of time with my mouth wide open (I have TMJ, which they were aware of, and this caused a lot of pain later on). Following the procedure, I experienced a severe lip infection on the right side of my mouth that I ended up needing to take antibiotics for and that kept me out of work for two weeks. Unsure what happened there, but I was not about to return to their facility to find out after my previous experiences. Lastly, I would like to address what I believe was a huge lack of transparency when it came to costs of treatment and billing. When I asked the billing receptionist, point-blank, "can you confirm that this will be my cost after insurance?" She said, point-blank, "yes." No disclaimer about potential discrepancies with lack of insurance coverage or information about full costs with no insurance coverage -- just a yes! I trusted her statement, and that was that. While I have a responsibility as a consumer to ask questions and read documentation in full, I believe that staff a medical facilities have an ethical responsibility to fully and transparently disclose that type of information when a patient asks about cost, especially when that could end up costing the patient thousands of dollars. read more

Make sure you get a pre authorization on all treatment. They are a bit of a bait and switch . They say it is covered and it isn't and they stick you with the bill. I've been a loyal patient with Kessler for years. As of today, I'll be moving onto a new practice. At first, they were a small practice that cared about their patients whereas now, their focus is on making money. Although I've experienced many appointments that required additional work, cost, and additional x-rays (or so was led to believe) family and friends mentioned this wasn't considered best practice. As of today, 5/9/23 Kessler's "new policy" now requires a $100 deposit to hold your scheduled appointment OR call the day of, to see if you can get in. I have never been to the dentist and felt more comfortable, relaxed, and well-taken-care-of than when I visit Kessler dental. Dr. Kessler and her staff are attentive and caring, always working quickly to ensure that their patients are completely at ease. The receptionists, especially, are deserving of accolades for their warm, welcoming demeanor AND their impressive knowledge of the technical details of their patients dental needs which enables them to seamlessly support the doctors and technicians. The offices are located in a clean and beautifully-remodeled home, each room offering substantial privacy from the view of other patients. One of my favorite features of Kessler Dental is their "comfort menu". Each patient is offered blankets, pillows, noise-cancelling headphones, a private selection of music, lip balm, water, and coffee or tea along with other options! So, whether you're the person who needs to drown everything out or the person who is comfortable with just listening to your favorite music while at the dentist, they have you covered! Though I rarely experienced any discomfort while having work done at Kessler, I was constantly reassured by the staff's explanations of their decisions and procedures as well as regularly asking if I was doing okay during procedures. Dr. Kessler and her staff have worked hard to build an oasis of comfort in a desert of mediocre and impersonal dentistry and that work shows!! I had a crown placed on a rear molar last month. I felt ZERO pain. I was able to watch my crown being made right before my eyes with their incredible CAD/CAM technology which takes a digital impression of the tooth that is to be crowned. No sloppy goop or molds, just a few quick pictures. The machine then runs a program that creates a PERFECT fitting crown. Could not have been easier. All in one visit. I LOVE my new crown. Today I had to have two fillings that were done many years ago replaced. Dr. Solovey and her assistant did a great job again. NO PAIN. The entire staff is very friendly. The dental hygienist was friendly and through, but the dentist tried to peddle some necessary oral cancer screening for extra $$. Given that I am under 30 and do not smoke, this just seemed like something I would expect a used car salesman to do. They also were not exactly gentle during some fillings I got done- the upper and lower part of my cheek was cut by the end of the procedure and I was full of canker sores for the next week. Lastly, I was double charged (over $300) for a visit because of issues with their credit card system. They admitted the double charge occurred, but instead of just writing me a check they made me file a dispute with the bank. I didn't get my money back for over a week. I have been to better dentists. Was a good practice at one time. The practice is now extremely profit oriented. They insist on the highest cost treatment regardless of insurance coverage and if you say no they "fire" you as a patient. Very sad but an example of why our health care system is so dysfunctional. read more

Yes I know dental insurance doesn't cover a lot but some of the items they pushed on me were red flags. This practice should realize that patients have access to a wealth of information on the internet about questionable dental sales techniques and dubious recommendations. Long story short - many years ago I went to Kessler and seemed that every check up they said I needed cavities filled. During one visit they told me I needed an immediate root canal. I was going away for the weekend so I said I wanted to wait until I returned. They told me it would be very painful if I didn't do the procedure right away. I went away for the weekend and felt fine so I got a second opinion. The other dentist told me a root canal was completely unnecessary and the cavities they had recently filled were also not needed. She recently told me I had a "severe infection" below the gum line and needed to extract 2 molars and put in dental implants. It would cost $8000! I got a second opinion and also went to see a periodontist. They both confirmed that there was no infection at all. Dr. Kessler's lack of knowledge and inefficiency in reading an x-ray are not her only problems. She has no concern for her patients and her bedside manner sucks! I am sorry to have to say that I no longer trust this dentist. Based on my own experience, the experience of my neighbor, and of those who have given reviews, I suspect that they will try to use your dental insurance as much as possible. Two years ago, I called for an appointment for a broken tooth and warned them that I was looking for a dentist who would not present me with a laundry list of procedures which they would like to do, but only what they truly HAD to do. They put a crown on the broken tooth and proceeded to add 8 more crowns to my teeth. I felt like my teeth were now in good shape and didn't think much more. When I returned after the worst of the pandemic, I was encouraged to pay for the cancer screening because "the number of people who have oral cancer has been increasing". I got the screening. Then, after they took the x-rays, I was told that I would have to take an antibiotic to kill the bacteria under my gums (I have had strong teeth and gums my entire life), that the area under my gums would need to be scraped and that I had a broken tooth under one of my crowns which would need to be pulled, the bone built up, a metal piece added to my gum and an implant added. This would be several visits. Oh, and for another $200, I could get a temporary "flipper" to cover up the metal before the implant was installed. They put me in a room where the dentist explained the importance of this entire process and where we discussed a payment plan. I was warned that after the gum scraping, that if I didn't floss several times a day, I would need additional scraping sessions. I left in a daze, with a potential bill for thousands of dollars over and above what my very high level of coverage would handle. I left with a strong , nagging gut-level feeling of the experience coupled with my previous experience of nine crowns and, because I was changing jobs, put off starting the process. One day, I was chatting with a neighbor and discovered that she had an experience with the office which involved the same series of dental "needs" and procedures. I have dental anxiety. I would rather eat ground glass than get my teeth cleaned! My insurance is excellent, but my fear outweighed any thoughts of taking care of my teeth. I want to tell you that Dr. Mel Kessler changed all of that. Dr. Mel and her staff are just the best! I have recently had two crowns done and a filling taken care of. Let me tell you just the thought of this kind of work would have sent me right through the roof until I went to Kessler Dental. Dr. Mel told me just today what a "good patient" I am. We both had quite a chuckle at how far along I've come with my dental anxiety. To say I am quite relaxed would be totally accurate. Since I've found Dr. Mel and her staff I am much more vigilant with cleaning and just taking better care of my smile. During the four years that I spent going to Kessler dental I had a total of six cavities, 2 root canals. I was also told that I had gum disease and required two separate scrapings. Fast forward to the dentist that I have been seeing for the past five years I have been told on each visit that my teeth are in good shape and that it's common to have receding gum due to getting older as it's common for some deterioration. I have spent a lot of money at Kessler as well as my family members.None of it seemed necessary. They are all out for the money. LONG STORY!!!!! BUT I NEED help!! For 20 years Ive had a broken tooth....20 years and no pain.... I knew it needed to be fixed BUT I had NO PAIN.... still I went to a new dentist and they talked me into fixing it and replacing the tooth I had pulled 6 years ago after a botched root canal that left me EXTREMELY Leary of dentists in general.....sooo I go 3 weeks ago and have it "fixed". Luckily I didn't need a root canal ( that was my biggest worry and they KNEW I really didn't want one) so I get it cleaned and drilled and a crown put on said broken tooth PLUS drilled down another tooth and created a bridge and 2 crowns...after 6 years I have all my teeth again...Im thinking ,WOW ...this is great...THEN the numbness wears off and Im in PAIN...I figure its normal so I deal with it for the next 3 days till I cannot stand it anymore...call the dentist and go in and she says my gums are irritated and gives me some steroid cream for them..for 3 days I use it and they call me to see how I am and I say better... but when I stop using the cream BAM pain comes back full force...I keep thinking the pain will get better....the extreme sensitivity I have from hot and cold they told me is normal and could last a month.... WELL 3 weeks its been and I just cannot handle the pain anymore so I call dentist office back...they put me on with the head dentist ( not the one who did my work) this dentist Im talking to is the OWNER of the practice...she looks at my chart and tells me ( without seeing ME) I NEED a root canal..WTF??? say what?? LONGER story short she is extremely condescending and tells me my teeth are infected and I need root canal ( of course I try and ask why this was not told to me BEFORE I had 2000$ worth of work done) she says the infection was there but other dentist must not have seen it. Also says the sensitivity Im experiencing is not normal even though 3 separate people from the practice told me it was... she tells me she is calling in and antibiotic and pain med to CVS pharmacy and they will set the root canal up for me... I am of course unhappy and crying cause I dont want a root canal ( she also talked down to me about my anxiety) BUT happy I may get some relief from this pain.... an hour later I go to pharmacy ( 15 mins b4 they close) and am told NOTHING was called in for me... NOTHING...I drove there for nothing... and this dentist SUCKS...I now just want to find a dentist who can help me and I can actually TRUST... any suggestions?? read more

Messed up my sons mouth. It was all swollen and gross! Lasted days like that and still numb the next day. will not be going back here again for anything. Our first visitt was a cleaning and the orthodontist threw up. So they tried to send us home without the cleaning! I was disappointed that after being a patient for a few years, and having numerous crowns replaced and going for cleaning every 3-4 months that a tooth with a cavity (that had been on a watch for a year) was not done while it could have been a filling. Instead it was let go until it needed a root canal and a crown. Was not that I had not been to the office during this time, I had several cleanings, and crowns replaced. When I questioned why it was not worked on sooner, at first my question went unanswered, the next time I asked I was told that the root canal would be covered under my insurance. New patients BEWARE! Be suspicious of an office who hands you a gift bag and gives you a tour to show you the new equipment they purchased to get you a crown in one day. Patients were sitting in the waiting room while the hygenists were chitchatting in the back. Within five minutes of Dr. Kessler looking at some pictures of my teeth and looking in my mouth, she declared I have an infected tooth, need two crowns and a mouthguard, because I grind my teeth. None of my other dentists have diagnosed me as needing a mouthguard, nor did I need two crowns, six months ago at my last dental appointment. Dr. Kessler didn't seem to care or believe me when I told her I have no pain or discomfort in my mouth. Before I could bolt out the door, the appointment coordinator insisted on seeing me to hand me a $5000+ estimate for the corrective work I needed. There is no way I am going back to this office. I definitely would not recommed this dental practice. The treatment plans devised involve more than need be. Went to another dentist for a second opinion and the treatment plan cost one tenth of what Dr. Kessler recommended! (& the second dentist is out of network for me) I received much better care at the other office and they were caring, compassionate and attenative to my questions. I didn't receive an attitude when I asked about my care like I did at Dr. Kessler's office.
