She happily opened two of the boxes so I could see them. As I was looking at another option, I started to open the box myself, and her attitude changed immediately. She told me that if I opened that box, they would have to throw it away. That really confused me because she had just opened multiple boxes moments earlier to help me compare the products. I couldn't understand why it was acceptable when she did it but not when I did. From that point on, the interaction felt very awkward, and she came across as short and rude. I understand there was a line and they were busy, but if helping customers choose a birthday gift slows down the checkout process, it might make more sense to display the birthday gifts somewhere other than the cash register. I love that Ulta offers choices, but the experience of selecting one shouldn't leave customers feeling like they're inconveniencing the staff.
