I make this review as a message to the management of this theatre hoping that it will get their attention. I grew up going to this little theatre, and the addition of the luxury seating options a few years ago truly leveled it up. I have never had a problem with Kent Plaza; it might've been rough on the outside, but the inside was clean, well staffed and the food was good. In my last few visits, it has been increasingly evident that the place is being neglected. The bathrooms are in dire need of updating and the luxury seating is breaking down (one seat didn't recline and another the back was lose). The ticket counter is never open leading to asinine concession lines, and as minor as it may seem, the screens above the theatres never have what is playing displayed. While all of these things may be small, it speaks to a lack of effort to keep this business alive. As someone who loves this theatre, I beg whoever is managing it to please put a little more effort into the dignity of this theatre. Do not become a theatre or business that just puts the bare minimum amount of effort into keeping it afloat. I recommend bringing back birthday parties as they're a great way to draw in customers and make a little bit of money. I have been holding out for WEEKS to see "Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" so I could see it for the first time with my LD boyfriend! We had a super packed week visiting with his family who also came to town, and while browsing for a dinner restaurant, I stumbled across this local little Cinema. We already had plans to go to Cinemark the next morning (Tuesday, to get discounted tickets) but had time in the evening to sneak in a movie. To my surprise, this theater had discounted MONDAYS, which as an avid movie-goer, I have never seen! I read some reviews and found out they give you a small popcorn with purchase of a movie ticket, and quickly adjusted our schedule for these last minute plans! I quickly discovered that while purchasing tickets online, "Luxury" showings provided the opportunity to reserve your seats. Any other showing is first-come-first-serve. We found this out by firsthand experience. Don't bother trying to call their phone number, because you'll be met with an automated message listing the movies and times of each showing, with no option to speak with a representative. We arrived 30 minutes before our 8:55pm showing and the theater was PACKED! The line for concessions was reaching the ticket counter (given it is a small lobby, but it was still incredibly long). We were told 60% of the theater was filled, and had to weigh our options, risk & reward. We wound up taking our chances that some of the good seats were left, but were surprised when we walked into the theater and it was completely empty!!!! We went back outside to read the movie showing, just to double check... But tens of teens started rushing in as soon as we picked our seats. We barely made it before the rush of concessions let out! I highly recommend getting to the theater 30+ minutes early if you are purchasing a first-come-first-serve ticket. There is no price difference, we just missed the chance to go to the earlier Luxury showing. It probably didn't help that, on top of it being $5.25 discount Mondays, we were also seeing the fan favorite, very popular "Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes." Along with the $5.25 movie ticket (each comes with free mini popcorn), they have $2 large soda and Icee deals, so we wound up spending $14.25 for two movie tickets to a highly favorable movie, popcorn, soda and Icee. I have been going to this theater for 15 years now. I recently purchased tickets to see a late movie. My husband and 13 year old son were going to see deadpool, and my 16 year old daughter and I were going to watch longlegs. We purchased our tickets and got in line for popcorn. When we got to the counter to order, some rude lady cut in front on the employee who was taking an order and said "ARE YOU THE ONE WITH ALL THESE KIDS?" Mind you I had 2......13 and 16....She began to state that unless the CHILDREN showed ID, MY CHILDREN THAT I GAVE BIRTH TO AND MY HUSBAND FATHERED. I said they are with us, 2 grown ass adults. She said we get no refund and unless she sees an ID saying they are 17 that we ALL have to leave! My husband and I were literally flabbergasted. I thought I was being punked because this girl was being so rude. Not to mention she was like shaking and acting rediculous. EVERYONE was staring at her. My husband I were like, OK, even though your being asshole and could have asked us to step out of line and have a GROWN ASS CONVERSATION, can we just get our money back at least?? She said NO REFUNDS SORRY! I have never been treated so poorly by an establishment. I get not wanting groups of underage kids in the theater after a certain time, but 2 kids with their PARENTS?! Not to mention the night before my 16 year old daughter was there after 9 with her friends (like they always do) and nobody said a word!! She singled us out and it felt like we were being discriminated against. Not a single other person in line was questioned or asked for ID, and some of them looked pretty young!! Whoever was working on Friday July 27th, SHAME ON YOU FOR NOT HAVING ANY TACT. There was no reason to approach us that way and we werent even making it a big deal but DAMN!. Manager or not, im writing to the attorney general and municiple courts because I feel I was singled out and discriminated against. I feel sorry for the other employees, as they looked embarrassed of her actions. I dont know if she is going through it in her personal life, but she needs some counseling or some time off.....SERIOUSLY worried for her well being. At any rate, I have messaged on facebook a million times, called and left messages, and am now contacting the owner through the BBB. I would like to not have to do this, but she should be fired and we should at least get our money back. I'm not sure what else to say other than every person in Kent goes to movies after 9, especially the high school kids, and NOONE stops them, so why stop us? ANY attention to this matter would be greatly appreciated, as I feel disheartnened because my daughter and I frequently go to late movies. Its absolutely devastating that now I cant bring her. Sure, Kent Plaza cinemas could use a few upgrades to their sound and projection equipment but this is still my go-to theater for 'block-buster' and 'wide release' type films because it's in the town I now call home. I absolutely LOVE Mighty Movie Monday where all movies are $5 and come with a small popcorn (perfect!) Everyone I know seems to complain about the sound in the theaters but to me it's only been an issue when you are watching a more audibly subdued film and the theater next door is showing a rager with lots of explosions and loud sound effects. So if you're seeing a RAGER, you'll probably be fine! ;) Plus who can beat a $5 outing for a movie with popcorn and friendly staff? Extremely friendly staff and very helpful! I called in advance about Autism Day at the movies and they answered every question I had and was very friendly about it. Then today, when I brought my 2 young boys here, they were so helpful and friendly and VERY PATIENT!!! The food is normal theater food, but again, very patient as my boys picked out what they wanted. My disappointment with this cinema is their tendency to open their doors only minutes before the first movie of the day starts. This policy leaves precious little time to do anything besides printing out one's tickets. I understand their not wanting to open too early, but surely a "happy middle ground" can be found. So, how about it, Management? P.S. About an hour later, I spoke with a young man by phone who said they normally open a mere 15 mins before the earliest show. Went to support the movies on 9/8/21 at 8:00pm waited close to 15 minutes to purchase tickets at food counter. Two ladies behind counter only one taking orders other one stocking and not helping. Had 8 people in front of me and after 15 minutes of employee not working but talking decided to leave. Couldn't disagree more with the positive reviews. College student employees who seem to live by the "never trust anyone over 30" motto. Hey, I was there not that long ago! Really poor customer service. It's winter, I know, but I don't know if I've ever seen a smile from an employee there. Horrible sound system there. I haven't seen a movie where I thought the audio was at the right level there. It's not just volume, but overall acoustics and, what sounds like, speakers that have seen (heard?) better days. I'm sorry, but to go complain to a manager, you miss part of the movie, and honestly, you feel like a dick. Recently asked a girl: hey, if the sound is bad again, can I just leave and get my money back? She basically said: no. Come on, that sucks. Seriously, call me a fool, but I've suffered through Gravity, Birdman, Wild, Whiplash, et al, with poor sound - I think I deserve to be reimbursed for at least one of those! The seats in the theater are very close to each other more than other theaters I've been to. Also no leg room as well along with the theater just being very small. Theater overall needs a lot of updating, they updated like three of the theater rooms with reclining chairs but it was a cheap move and they should've done all of them possible for a more satisfying guest experience. read more
