Ken's Fruit Market is a halfway point to downtown, from the south side of Kent County. Has a nice mix of fruit, vegetables, frozen food items, and much more. Parking can be crazy, and the service is inconsistent. But worth it for their meat and fish counter and other items. The lighting is good, and the spirit of the people is warm and friendly. You have to enter the store from the back end, due to security. Enjoy and find your favorite hidden gems. read more

Excellent prices on produce and meat I've been using Ken's for about 5 years. I was disappointed when their 28th street store closed but going to the Eastern or Plainfield stores are well worth it. Their produce is local and fresh. Their meats are fantastic. The butchers spend time with me helping stay in budget and recommend cooking options. I spend so much less with them than Family Fare or Meijers, and their customer service is far better. read more

You wouldn't think about it to look at the place, but Ken's Fruit Market is an old-school grocery store like I grew up with in the 70s and 80s. It's not a superstore that is 1200 miles long and carries Aquifer-Grown Organic Tofu Rhinds from the Gaudalcanalian Tofu Farming Collective - but if you want some fresh fruit, fresh meats, or even a kick-butt assortment of snacks, Ken's is your place. The store is small and the entrance isn't on Eastern like you might suppose, but the food is fresh, the service is downright neighborly, and the prices are just as good as you might find elsewhere. read more

Ken's is the best. Great produce, friendly people and easily walkable/bikeable because of the location. My wife and I have almost stopped going to Meijer completely and are saving a bundle from shopping here. The only thing that is not really available here is some specialty foods and ethnic/exotic ingredients, but that's not really a big deal. We can get 90% of our weekly shopping here. Plus, their stock is constantly evolving and expanding, so I'm always seeing something new that I had to go elsewhere for the previous month. It really is the best market in GR. Nearest bike parking is across Eastern Ave., in front of Real Food Cafe. Easy to park and secure, but crossing Eastern can be a pain at high-traffic times. Plus, then you have to carry your bags across Eastern to your ride. With a lot of bags, can be a pain. *EDIT* There's now a rack just south of Ken's on the same side of the street, as well as another on the parking lot side, right outside of the shoe repair shop. Way more convenient. read more

Ken's is great! Convenient and reasonably priced. The meat counter has AMAZING thick sliced bacon by the pound. They also make their own bratwurst. Beef filet for $10 less a pound than the closest chain supermarket. Yes, the selection of dry goods is limited. I shop for produce and meat every couple of days to always have fresh. The produce at the Eastern St. location is very old. It really doesn't matter what you buy -- it will be old and taste like cardboard when you cook it. Their bulk spices are good. The canned and cartoned products are much more expensive than at other grocery stores, and even their bottled water by the gallon is higher than anywhere else. If you love to cook, look elsewhere for produce and pay a little more for fresh stuff that is not beyond its shelf life. If you doubt me, go into Ken's, pick up a bunch of cilantro, sniff it, and you'll realize it smells like nothing. No cilantro smell whatsoever. Nothing fresh about anything here. Two stars for the friendly staff though. read more

There's a local charm to Ken's Fruit market. For a local store on one floor, it's pretty big and has a wide selection of goods from milk to grab and go beverages. They have a great meat section in the back with quality meats. Next to the meat section is a long row of high quality candies for the kids. The staff are friendly. Next time I come back to Grand Rapids, I'll make it a point to visit Ken's Fruit Market. read more

They've upgraded even further in now providing a wide range of non-perishables and frozen foods! They're going from neighborhood stop to full fleshed grocery store. Nice little neighborhood family locally owned grocery store. It is a gem in the Alger Height neighborhood. I have now exclusively shopped here for weekly grocery unless I need non perishable items (i.e. large amount of paper products etc). I started going to Ken's shortly after they opened and never looked back. The prices are very competative or lower than other local grocers. Staff are always willing to answer questions (if they don't know they find someonre who does). They keep the store clean, Yea! The meat department offers a good variety of cuts, always fresh & they are happy to fill special requests. There is a big selection of sausages made in house. I especially love the fresh fruits & veggies. They're so fresh that they last much longer at home. Every so often there is a one day store wide mega sale. A great day to stock up, you can't beat it. Kens Fruit Market used to be a great store. Friendly cashiers and stock people. The meats were great. Fresh and full of flavor. Now the place smells like rotted meat. Several times I have had to return meat that was spoiled or smelled bad. The customer service is almost non-existant other than an over friendly touchy feely guy. The check out lanes are long and slow! They seem to be trying to cut back on the help. The shelves are not stocked, one cashier and a second rate meat grade. I really hope they can pull it together and get back to the great market they used to be. Now they are very poor not even rating a star! read more

Place is full of out-dated groceries. I have actually seen and heard an employee be told to re-date items that were several weeks past there due date. I have also seen this happen in the bulk food packages. The employee was told to repackage items and give them a new out date of 6 months. Isn't that illegal as well as just plain wrong? read more
