I now live near Eden Prairie and drive all the way to his shop in Lake Elmo because he is a great barber who gives a great cut. He's able to give a board room professional cut for business leaders, stylish casual adult cuts, and fun spunky cuts for teens and young adults (he cuts my son's hair too). I'm a high expectation customer and he always kills it. I read the one star review, and I'm not sure that guy really wanted a barber-- reads like he really wanted some actors studio hairstylist. I mean-- he brought several photos of previous cuts he had and had instructions down to the fractional inch, um... not sure what THAT person was about but I can attest that Nathan is an awesome barber for men.

Before I found Allen Lin, I thought that an itchy, burning scalp was part of the normal hair…read morecoloring process. I didn't know that some stylists dilute the color before applying it so they can save money on product, and I also thought that having my rinse water turn dark brown after the first few shampoos was normal too. It's not. It depends on the product your technician uses, and Allen uses the absolute best! My coloring process is so comfortable and I have zero runoff because the color stays on my hair instead of going down the drain. I visit Allen about every six weeks (or until I can't stand my gray roots anymore), and if my hair didn't grow, I could go much longer between salon visits. Allen also cuts my waist length hair once a year. He will do exactly what you say, meaning if you ask for a one inch trim, you won't end up with a six inch chop! Allen is meticulous in his work and never rushes. He is a perfectionist in the best way. Just like his coloring products, Allen only uses top of the line shears. Yes, that makes a big difference too. My hair looks great with no split ends and no dryness. Phenomenal! Allen's prices are probably in line with other salons except his service is so much better. I don't really know what other salons charge because I won't let anyone else touch my hair. If I could bubble wrap this guy to keep him safe, I would. I don't know what I would do without him. The bottom line is that if you want a gold standard, top notch master stylist, Allen is your huckleberry. Schedule early if you want a specific day because he is always booked. The best ones always are!

He also didn't ask for my name/age/address/birthday etc to enter into a computer. Dave's is a classic barber shop that's apparently been in the family for two generation. It has all the classic barber shop stuff around, like straight razors, "unbreakable" combs, and bottles of bay rum that look like they actually get used. The walls are covered with eclectic... stuff. Old hunting decoys, fishing knives. Guy stuff. It looks kind of like a man cave, which is just fine by me. I had the opportunity to shoot the shit with Dave for a while. Turns out, they don't take plastic and I didn't have any cash or a check book on me. My wife dropped me off, so I had to wait for her to come back with some cash. She was in a store and didn't get my calls. Dave kept the place open for me (they close at 6:00 on weekdays) and we both waited for over a half hour, talking about sports, hunting, junk scavenging, you know, stuff you expect to talk to your barber about. I apologized for keeping him, but Dave was very welcoming and didn't want me to worry. (Almost) anyone can cut hair, but it's pretty clear that Dave wants repeat customers and is willing to work for it.
