That attorney ended up not returning any of my calls or doing any work after I signed on. (Then, later I found out he has a horrible reputation, but that wasn't online anywhere, probably because no one wants problems with an attorney after a bad review.) That was strange and frustrating and so was my continued online search. There were few reviews on Yelp (or other online sources) and I didn't know where to turn and was even more wary of finding another problem attorney. I contacted the Oregon Bar Association for a referral and they recommended James Shikany. I figured the Bar would make sure he's in good standing and if I had problems later, they might be able to help me resolve any issues with him. Luckily, I had no problems working with Jim over the period of a year and a half. I've continually found him quick to respond to calls and emails, knowledgeable, fast acting and easy to work with--enough that I would recommend him to friends. I can say I was 100% clueless about any estate matters and needed to have a lot explained to me. It's not easy dealing with confusing estate issues when a close loved one has passed and you're grieving. The last thing anyone needs is to sign on with any professional who makes the situation worse. At the same time I signed on with Jim, I hired a CPA who has turned out to be very difficult to work with and has created so much undue stress due to poor guidance and attitude.
