One of his greatest talents is that he knows how to recognize and capture your authentic expressions, even in a studio environment. This is evident when you look through his portfolio. I was in town and in need of a headshot, so after reading all the rave reviews about Ben, I decided to give it a shot. I booked an appointment online, and while there were a few quirks to the system, Ben was quick to address the confusion and make sure I was set up for my appointment. The service prices are also listed online, and I appreciate the transparency. Prior to the appointment, Ben sent me a questionnaire to determine exactly what I was looking for and also to inform me of what I should expect. He gave me some very useful advice on what to wear with the lighting and what products to avoid etc. On the day of the appointment, Ben welcomed me to his studio and quickly put me at ease. He was very knowledgeable and was able to quickly identify which angles were best for me and what I wanted. He also had lots of useful tips on how to create a natural smile and talked me through the process every step of the way. Since I wanted a professional headshot, he took about 35 shots in a little over an hour. I brought a few tops to try so we did a couple shots in each outfit and also tried different backgrounds. I loved how he was so flexible and clearly wanted to help me get the best shot. After the shoot, about 24-48 hours later he sent me the proofs. I chose my top 3 and another 24 hours later he sent me the final photographs. I'm very pleased with the final product, they are exactly what I needed. You can also request some final airbrushing for a small fee if you desire. Overall, I had a wonderful experience with Ben's photography service. He was professional, approachable, and knowledgeable. There's times you just need it, like, yesterday. A headshot. Now. Where do I go? Luckily I found Ben. "Sure, come on in", he said. "By the way, here's an article to help you pick the best suit to wear to convey the message you want". The process couldn't have been easier. He had a great stylist (Kris) there, and she got me all fixed up to look my best. We discussed what image I wanted to portray (honest, approachable, confident). They did a couple of test shots, adjusted hair and makeup a bit, and we were off and running. Ben coached me on how to get the most natural look and smile (worth the cost of the session right there, for all times I ever get a picture taken in the future). Ben got me the proofs online right away, made my selection (so many good ones to choose from), and I had the final digital pictures in an email an hour later. The only slight issue I had with the whole process was the proofs had watermarks were distracting. (I'm guessing if I'd asked him to, he would have sent me a batch without). WHY GET A HEADSHOT: Just looking at what I got vs. the average LinkedIn selfie, wow, what a difference. What image do you want to convey? "I'm an amateur, I take short cuts", or "I'm a true professional that does it right". Do yourself a favor, and have Ben get you a truly professional image. Ben is awesome! We needed professional headshots and had no idea how to even begin to approach it, and Ben provided a lot of direction. We also arrived 30 minutes early to our appointment, but Ben greeted us and took us in early anyway and spent about an hour to get three good images. He was very reassuring and laid back, stating that we can take photos all day just to get the right one if we needed, but he also said he completely understands if you feel burned out from taking so many photos. When people say don't cut yourself short on the wedding photography budget - don't mull on it, take that advice. When I think of our situation with the wedding pictures I get sick to my stomach because I know there is nothing I can do to fix it. It's not something you can repeat and you can only re-stage something to a certain extent. My husband and I live in Virginia and choice to do our wedding in Oregon at Timberline Lodge. To us, Timberline Lodge is one of the coolest places on Earth -definitely breath-taking. We picked Ben because the price seemed right and he seemed committed. Four months before our wedding, we flew out to Oregon to check out the venue and meet all of our vendors, including Ben. We did this because we wanted to make sure we had everything squared away before the wedding. At that time we talked to Ben about our expectations. Two specific things we were passionate about were - no 'getting ready' shots, and we definitely wanted to capture as many scenic shots as we could before the wedding started. One of the main reasons why we picked Timberline is because of the spectacular views. We were hoping to get awesome sunset and mountain shots. We actually set our wedding start time at 5:30 pm so that we would have ample time to do pictures at sunset (wedding in November). During our visit with Ben, he ensured us that he would scope out Timberline Lodge to pick out the best locations for pictures. We were stoked! We left that appointment feeling confident that we were in good hands. When I saw Ben for the first time the day of the wedding I assumed he had a plan in place. From my perspective, and I've never been married before, I thought you set a time for pictures, set expectations beforehand (stated above), and then let the Photographer take the lead from there. The last thing you want to do on your wedding day is worry about logistics. Ben and his wife, Jada, came into the room where the bridesmaids and I were getting ready and snapped a dozen or so pictures. In retrospect - I would think he'd be planning locations for pictures and figuring out the order of when to take pictures and with whom. Long story short - we raced around the hotel, inside and out, passing family and friends, trying to find a good location for pictures. So much time was lost in that process that we were only able to snap a few pictures. We didn't get a single shot with Mt Hood in the background. There were very few outdoor shots. Like I said, you can only re-stage your wedding pictures to a degree. Missing pictures of the beautiful scenery at Mt Hood is irreplaceable. In addition to the lack of pictures taken, I felt like Ben came off unprofessional in the aftermath of the wedding. I was perplexed by some of his comments. He sent me an email stating that he had to pay for his own meal, but after talking to the day-of wedding coordinator and the venue wedding coordinator they both confirmed that he and his assistant, Pete, ate at the bar and charged the expense to the master bill, which was the plan. Secondly, he stated that he thought I was going to provide him a hotel room the night of the event. I'm unsure when and where the miscommunication pursued, but I'm pretty sure this is not customary. When I reviewed this with my husband, Drew, he said that he recalled Ben mentioning that he was going to possibly bring his wife and they'd make a trip out of it. Nonetheless, I think it's really important to go pick a photographer who comes with lots of referrals. You can't redo your wedding pictures and wedding pictures are not cheap. read more
