We…read morehad a couple of dressed-up, knowledgeable and idiosyncratic docents/tour guides (the Fort is strictly tour-guided), with a peculiarly interesting repertoire that sometimes over-shadowed the Fort's history being recited (at least for me). Nothing negative; just interesting. The Fort itself had never seen war and a good majority of the Fort has simply been recreated) so its historical history is strictly Maine -- I believe it may be the oldest standing wooden fort in the USA. The Colby College Museum of Art is located on its namesake's beautiful and bustling campus. The modern, gleaming glass structure makes for a striking contrast to the traditional buildings surrounding it, and might give one reason to think this is a "modern" museum of art, which it is not. CCMA holds a surprisingly eclectic ensemble of classical and modern works. Even more surprising (considering the plethora of works presented) is the fact that there is no fee to enjoy this museum! I was really impressed with the expansiveness of the showrooms -- every piece had a lot of breathing room in which to display itself -- and the number of galleries to explore. This museum certainly rivals some of the great museums I've visited throughout my years of traveling (both here and abroad). And the fact that it's free, on a college campus, is even more astonishing to me! And there were "firsts" for me, too: A special collection of curated works by the artist Eastman Johnson -- I'd never heard of him before -- that was not necessarily my style of art -- I lean towards modern abstract, which there's plenty here to relish! -- but was astonishingly realistic and beautiful in a very rough-and-tumble American-way. I thoroughly enjoyed it! In sum, our visit to Colby College Museum of Art was thoroughly worth the hour's drive to Waterville, and I highly recommend a stop here should you ever find yourself in Waterville, ME. Excellent!!!

For a small college like Colby, this art museum is surprisingly comparable to museums at much…read morelarger universities. And it keeps getting bigger and better. There is free admission for all. There are some gems in the permanent collection and strength in particular areas (eg works by Alex Katz). If you truly love art, you will probably find an interesting special exhibition or two on display when you visit. What is the point in having a museum like this? As Picasso said, "the purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls."

We were in the rear of the first floor orchestra section and it was fine. Parking is fairly easy to find, even during Christmas shopping time like when we went. They are trying to do the right thing currently during Clovis, requiring masks and proof of vaccination. Of course they can't do much about the losers who take them off once they sit down. They made an announcement, but you can hardly except volunteers to go around and enforce the rule and risk a scene with a yahoo. I only had a minor beef with them when we went: our show started 20 minutes late . There was no obvious reason as attendees had stopped coming in. Normally I wouldn't have cared, but it had started snowing earlier and I would have preferred to hit the road sooner and gotten home before midnight. It was a stressful drive, but that wouldn't prevent me from attending another event -- perhaps not in the dead of winter, though!

For a few days I was immersed in the history of the Washburn family, living the way they lived, eating what they ate, and doing the work they did. It was a truly wonderful experience that I carry with me 10 years later. I moved to Maine recently, and I fully intend on revisiting Norlands soon. In fact, I plan on taking my family there for an event they're doing for the Christmas season. Norlands is a treasure of Maine and a history lover's delight. I'm grateful for the memories of the programs I engaged in there, and I can't wait to go back!
