My recent three night stay at The Avalon was just perfect for that. The location is great - less than 5 minutes walk to the beach in Kemp Town, right near lots of shops and restaurants and within a short walk to the centre of Brighton. Walking from the train station took less than half an hour, and my favourite coffee shop ever, Redroaster (http://www.qype.co.uk/place/123197-Redroaster-Coffee-House-Brighton) , is moments away. Mmmm, hot chocolate! Owners Brian and Tom made us all feel very welcome, especially Benji the dog who had a fuss made of him every morning in the breakfast room. Speaking of which, the hearty breakfasts set us up very nicely for days of wandering around town, and help was on hand to tell us about good countryside walks for Benji complete with maps and bus times. It was lovely to be so well looked after, it's just a shame we didn't have time to go everywhere we wanted. Having a really nice room to hang out in meant we didn't feel like we needed to be out and about all the time, and I can highly recommend the four poster room with its super comfy bed and sofa, perfect for reclining on and watching a movie (a DVD library in the breakfast room helped with this also). Free wifi was the icing on a very nice cake, and I'm sure we'll be going back to the Avalon very soon.

Already, I was excited about this fact, but also the owner was exceptionally friendly over the phone, taking a genuine interest in the reason we were coming to Brighton (boyf was walking London2Brighton and needed a place to bathe and relax after the ordeal!) When I arrived and picked the keys up, the receptionist there was equally friendly and helpful and seemed genuinely excited that we were going to stay in this new room! I opened the door to this new room and was absolutely flooded by sunshine streaming in through the shutters lining the whole room, and when i looked out the window to my left I had an unobscured view of the sea and a lovely view of the small green patch in the middle of New Steine. The room itself was refreshingly decorated with white and had lime green accesories and the bathroom had a bath with a low mounted shower. Initially this concerned me but i realised that perhaps it had been done so as not to get water all over the floor, and in fact it was quite nice to take a bath and shower my hair in the bath. If you are a die hard fan of showers though, perhaps this set up wouldn't suit you. There were a selection of coffees and teas and a hairdryer, flat screen TV and Iron with ironing board. Plenty of room to store clothes, desk if needed and comfortable sofa too. New Steine itself is lovely and there are a host of shops, restaurants, cafes and late opening food stores. This is not a hotel so food is not included but I prefer this as it gives me the sense of 'living' in a place not just 'staying'. I believe from their website however that you can order breakfast in bed from an outside company which is nice. Note to anyone staying on this side: there is a street lamp just outside the window BUT it turns off at 11pm after which the room is more than adequetly dark! Overall, I would love to come back and stay here, it was a lovely haven in Brighton and great to have freedom to come and go, great location in easy reach of all the attractions and very very close to the beach. The room was bright and had a large, comfortable king size bed. If you're looking for a basic accommodation at a good price this is a great option, though we found the room lacking some amenities that could have easily transformed an average stay into a remarkable one. Potential visitors should note that no staff that work on the premises, so you need to pick up your keys from Strawberry Fields across the street. There is a number you can call for assistance but unfortunately, there is no phone located in the building to make a call from, so if you're travelling from overseas and can't get onto a cell network in the UK the number is useless. The room was tidy, but the cleaning around the edges seemed to be neglected (there was noticeable dust collecting in the corners). The bathroom was very dated and there was a enough grime around the shower drain that I felt compelled to wear flip flops. Over the course of a 6 night stay, we only had the towels changed once (on day 2), even when we had left them on the floor in hopes of a change. The toiletries (which consisted of a bar of soap and a shampoo) were also never replenished. I realize that if I had access to a phone I could have called and requested a towel change and replenishment of toiletries, but this really is something that should be standard in a guest house stay and that you shouldn't have to go out of your way to ask for. Overall, the price was reasonable, the location was wonderful, and the shortcomings I've noted could easily be remedied.

Terrible, unsafe with fire security issue, the place was closed but still rented out???…read more First problem. On arrival at 3.10 pm (automatic checkins only, no staff on site) even outside the building I could hear that the fire alarm was off. Once I entered the building, I called the hotel number and I was promised that the faulty alarm would be fixed shortly. The second problem. Once I unlocked the door to my room, my key got stuck in the lock what was already falling apart, very old as everything in the building. I notified the hotel staff by calling them and got another 'promise' that this would be fixed. Then I left the hotel to explore Brighton. After three hours, at 6 pm I received a call from a hotel staff asking me if I managed to check in. In response, I had to remind the fire alarm problem and the stuck key problem. The person 'promised' that their colleagues would fix the issues. Once back to the hotel at 8 pm, surprise, surprise! Nothing changed. Then I checked the fire alarm panel and found a servicing company A&T number. Their response was "call fire brigade on 999.This building is and was closed and not to be rented out." So I called 999 who arrived in 2 minutes and then a neighbour mentioned that there was a flooding in the building what damaged electricity and the place seems to be unsafe, confirming A&T reply. Finally at 9 pm I left back to Cambridge. I asked for a refund, got nothing so far. Hotels.com promised £30 in vouchers even though I paid £120 for the night.

After my husband left for Spain on business & I had to change hotels from the original hotel I had…read morebooked because of a scheduled boiler replacement, I had two goals. I wanted a room that was (1) a good value (2) in a safe neighborhood, because I knew I'd be out wandering and shopping and eating alone until late every night. I also didn't want to spend a lot of money on an ocean view because, in my husband's absence, I knew I wouldn't spend much time in the room with my eyes open. This place fit the bill perfectly. It's located on a little square just off the shore in a line with several other small multi-level inn type establishments. My room was a downstairs room, which felt particularly safe to me despite having a door to the outside (albeit a locked courtyard) right outside my room. My room key happened to fit the outside door, so I was able to make sure it was locked each night before bed. Hallway lights are on timers, which could last a little longer than they do per activation, but which sufficiently allow you to illuminate the way to your room when you come in after dark nonetheless. After around 8 at night, the hotel is unmanned, and entry from the street is by key only - those little timer lights become very important when you're one of only a few guests (or the only guest!) and you're coming in to a pitch black space unaccompanied! I felt completely safe there. In fact, I walked the entire area of Brighton & came in well after dark every night, and at no time did I feel the least bit worried about my safety. The room itself was clean and cozy, and one of the very few places in Brighton where I didn't have to crank the radiator to warm the room at night - it was perfectly toasty by default and perfectly comfortable! Bathroom was clean, water pressure was good & water temp was consistent and responsive to adjustment. The manager on duty was super nice, helpful & very friendly, and met my very few requests promptly and with a smile. He always seemed interested in whether my stay was going as planned and whether they were providing all I needed there - just very accommodating. The most outstanding thing about the room was this: a small fridge, in which they provide bottled water, beer, wine, snacks, cokes, and even milk for making your tea or coffee using the electric kettle they provide. They also provide teabags, instant coffee, and brown and white sugars. It really makes life so easy when you don't have to consider procuring these basic items every time the need for one arises, and further that you're not at risk of paying three prices for them if you actually consume them (unlike in the US, where a fridge full of goodies is a trap for the unwary hungry or thirsty traveler!). Kudos to Churchill Brighton for getting this small detail right, I view it as definite reason this place gets 4 stars from me rather than 3 (it is a very basic hotel, after all) and a good reason to pick Churchill Brighton over the many others in its class!
