Haven't been in a number of years, and decided to check out this year's arts fest. Once finished…read moreexercising at the downtown YMCA, I simply walked over to Main Street. Don't think I spent a full hour looking at all the vendors, but I checked out each one and thoroughly enjoyed myself. A few of the vendors I recognized from years gone by. Others were brand new to me. For some reason, the flow of the event seemed better organized from what I remember. Or maybe it was because it was the first day of the event. Who knows? There were definitely less people out wandering around. Just wait until the weekend. Ha ha! Having formerly worked in downtown on Main Street, I swung by where the old shop was formerly located. After a few minutes of reminiscing, I continued on my way. In the end, the wares offered are a want and not a need, and certainly way out of my meager budget. I still enjoy looking at everything. There were also two bands performing, but I didn't feel like sticking around. May come back before the festival ends on Sunday.

What I really enjoyed the most is all the paintings of each disciples. James, the volunteer on duty, was great in providing the history of the museum and paintings. There is a room with wax figures depicting the Last Supper. There is an accompanying voiceover giving the history behind the original painting by Da Vinci. When you first walk in, there are paintings an artist made of the 12 apostles using live models who he thought represented each of the 12 disciples. There are all sorts of crosses that represent Christianity over the course of the centuries that also hang in the forum. There is a little museum with artworks depicting scenes from the Bible and artifacts of Christianity from a long time ago. There is also a an inspired creation of the Ark of the Covenant here. It is run by volunteers and worth the visit to see! I would call this a little gem you don't want to miss it!

What really stood out to me was the people behind it. The father-and-son team curating the museum are incredibly genuine and welcoming. They're the kind of folks who take the time to talk with visitors, share stories about the cars, and make you feel like you're part of something special rather than just passing through. The collection itself is outstanding--beautiful vehicles, tons of nostalgic toys, and plenty of unique pieces that make you stop and look twice. There's clearly a lot of thought and care put into how everything is displayed. The most amazing part? It's free. In a world where everything costs something, they've chosen to open the doors to everyone simply because they love sharing it. That says a lot about their character. This is a smaller gallery located in an older house. There are several display cases full of plates, vases, and other standard porcelain items. There are some unique ones with the octopus and this flower sculpture from porcelain which I really liked. There is a section where you can see an old kiln and the process of painting porcelain plates too. The curator was friendly and nice to talk to as well. If I recall they do have some classes and teachers that come by and some new kilns in the back room. If you love to learn about older art forms check this place out.

The Holy Sepulcher exhibit cost $18. It featured small wooden fragments believed to be relics of the True Cross from Christ's crucifixion. Each item carries a rich history. As Christians, we enjoyed this exhibit very much. The other areas of the museum were more spacious. 2 notable works of art included Caravaggio's The Cardsharps and Michelangelo's The Torment of Saint Anthony, an early piece thought to be his very first painting. The entire museum was easy to walk through and explore at your own pace. Service: The staff was friendly and accommodating. Self-service luggage storage was a plus as it was very convenient. We had 2 carry-on luggages and a backpack. There is a big cafe inside with patio seating for lunchtime. Parking: Free in the parking lot. We took ride-share from DFW airport since we came here before checking in to our hotel back in Dallas.

I've made my feelings known about the world class museum that is The Kimball in previous reviews. You have either gone,want to go back ASAP or don't care. No middle ground here. I am posting this specifically for those who may want something to do in DFW in the next few days. Like,Once in a lifetime exhibition of Holy objects. You are guaranteed a memorable visit at the Kimball even if you don't make the Holy Sepulcher. However,this exhibit is beyond impressive. Go!

They have short movies announced over the intercom about every 30 minutes. We enjoyed sitting in our airline seats, seatbelts included, to watch the production.They have it set up by decade where you can see the evolution of the flight attendants and the pilots uniforms which was neat to see. There's a DC3 plane that you can walk inside. There's even an evacuation slide inside. I'm glad this is here!

The gallery itself is well lit, welcoming, and provides quite a bit to look at. The single staff member offered help, which we didn't need (we were just looking) and he was not pushy or invasive. My company rented the gallery to hold a corporate event in August 2018. Phil, the owner, couldn't have been a more gracious or helpful host. He recommended a local caterer and made other arrangements that enabled our guests to truly enjoy and appreciate the venue and our event. Phil mentioned that they only do 10-12 events per year, but I would highly recommend that you give him a call if you're interested in a beautiful venue for a reception or corporate event. Or simply go visit and enjoy the museum-quality art for sale at Great American West Gallery.
