I broke down and used Keith's Power again since the last use was about 8 years ago. I had them to repair my snow blower, which they did. Although we have not used it, due to the lack of snow, everything checks out. They responded very quickly. The chute and gear works better than new. If you use Keith's you better take your equipment early early spring because once the summer starts, they are going to basically cater to the landscape companies getting their equipment out first and taking several weeks to get the individual customers equipment out. I have been dealing with Keith for at least 30 years. He has been helpful and responsive at least a dozen times over the years. My most recent purchase was June 2025 of a 42" zero turn mower (my third zero turn and 5th mower from Keith). The mower was delivered to my home and I mowed with it the next day (Friday). I always check my oil, added fresh gas, and gave it the once over and everything was good. Mower ran fine but after about 35 minutes, the mower started acting strange and finally would not run, as if it was starving for fuel. I called Keith and they came and picked up around 9:15 am the next day, Saturday, ( I am in Crown Point), and returned the mower the same day to my home! Turns out it apparently was something from the Toro factory that may have gotten into the fuel system that was flushed out, and the mower runs perfectly again. Given it is June, and the height of the mowing season, I would say this service was excellent. I highly recommend that you go to Keith's and tell them Kevin Smith sent me. read more

It is really difficult to give a star rating for this business. I will break it down into subsections... Sales: 5 star Parts: 4 star Service: 0 stars THE GOOD: This is actually a really good place to buy a new chainsaw or weed wacker. They carry high end brands, but the prices are very competitive. Ive never bought a lawn mower here, but they do occasionally sell used mowers. They also sell generators. This is also a great place to buy parts. They can source most parts and are upfront about the time it takes parts to come it, etc. Lawn parts are a little harder to source than automotive parts so its nice to have a place that can look this stuff up for you and order them. Go directly to the bilingual guy at the counter... this guy is the Lawn God; he is quick on the computer, extremely knowledgeable, straight forward, and can flip between English and Spanish. This guy should open his own shop. THE BAD: Ive stopped taking my lawn equipment here... because of the past two service experiences I've had at Keith's, Ive stopped patronizing Keith's. Here is the problem... Keith's Service is built entirely on the backs of two so-so mechanics. They are knowledgeable, but have pretty poor communication skills, and they break stuff... like, every time I take something in they break it... which is the opposite of fixing it. So Keith's business model, they take in every piece of equipment that comes in the door. They charge a $100 deposit fee, then they take 3-6 months to fix whatever it is. So, they load the yard with equipment, and then these two guys slowly make their way through the repairs. And here is where the problem lies... I paid a $100 deposit, my mower sits in their yard for 2 months, they didnt take very good notes on what needed to be done to the machine, they fixed the wrong thing on the mower, lied to me about what happened, and then wouldnt go any further on the machine until I paid another deposit to put the machine back together. It wasnt even a good lie... I mean, if you are going to lie, make sure its a good lie. So, as a customer, Im stuck. If I dont pay for the repair, they keep my mower. The second machine I took in (a snow thrower), I brought the parts with the machine, wrote on the paper what I wanted them to do, waited two months, then the mechanic calls and tells me the blade of the snow thrower broke. I had asked them to change the carb. He explains by saying "we always test out snow throwers after we fix them"... except, there wasnt any snow on the ground when the repair was done. Unless they test out snow throwers on rocks, and tree stumps. I dont mind being over-charged... I dont mind having to wait, but don't lie to me to make up for your lack of organization. Also, if you make a mistake, be honest about it; The money you have to pay for a broken snow thrower blade will be made up for by having a life-long return customer. Small engine repair shops are few and far between, Ive found another shop to go to, thank God. What Keith's can do to improve their shop is to get rid of Keith, they have way too many managers, way too people at the counter. All they need is one person on the phone, one person at the counter, then expand their shop. Hire two more mechanics, so you can move the equipment a little faster. And lastly, stop lying to your customers, stand by your work, stop selling refurbished parts as new. Until this happens, does anyone know what a consumer's rights are when a small engine shop rips them off? I know consumers have quite a few rights when it comes to an automobile shop... the law covers many different forms of fraud and shops can be held liable for lying to customers. I took my lawnmower and to Keith's on April 30, 2024 they said it would be 4 to 6 weeks before he can get to it. I will have to put a $50 down deposit to guarantee my spot in line. They were really backed up . Nine to ten weeks later no phone call !!!! I just happen to call, they said oh bring the lawn more in. I brought the lawn mower in to them .. was told it will be ready in a couple of days that was on Tuesday of last week June 25 just happened to call today , July 1,2024 my bill was $240.00 total for a tuneup on a 10 year old lawnmower!!!! all they did was change the spark plugs and change. The blade blade .. the blade wasn't even sharpen.!!!! for that kind of money I could've bought a new lawnmower. I didn't pay but 375bucks for it 10years ago. I have bought several things from Keith's including a snowblower and chainsaw. I used them for repairs for a push lawnmower and old snowblower--all good. My John Deere riding mower recently stopped working right in the middle of the front lawn. We got a new battery, solenoid, starter, spark plug and changed the oil--Nope. Wouldn't run. Keith's picked it up, supposedly fixed it, and dropped it off. Cost:$275. I went to cut the front lawn and after 10 swipes up and down, it broke. I paid $27.50 per row to mow my front lawn. I asked them to pick it up, and the guy told me they wanted to put in a new motor for $650 and up. None. If they didn't know how to fix the mower, they shouldn't have taken it or charged me. Wow!! 1st time customer. Called Keith's as my JD D105 had no power. I asked the what the turn around time was(expecting 3-4 weeks) and was told "about a week". I was floored as the JD dealer was at 3-4 weeks. I asked if they could pick/up and deliver... no problem they said. I called on Tuesday and asked how long till you can pick up? They said "possibly tomorrow but by Friday for sure"!!I was thrilled. Lo and behold they were there the next day. Now, a week later, I called and inquired about my machine. "It's done"!!!! They just dropped it off and not only does it work like it was new, but they pressure washed it to boot!! Thank you Keith's, you have a customer for life. Brought in a mower deck that needed a new spindle. Took 3 months, six phone calls and two personal visits to the shop before I got it back. Replaced the spindle, but also completed other service which I did not want or authorize. They replaced my belt, both blades, my side chute, and all my springs and cotter pins because they were lost (They were not lost -- I took them off before bringing them in so that they WOULDN'T get lost.) They charged me for all of it, even though I didn't want it or authorize it. Very disappointed in their service. read more

I have purchased some high end equipment there, guided by the advice of owner Keith, and I have been very satisfied in hindsight. Keith's knowledge of small motors and machinery is exceptional. The reviewer who complained about customer service should have gone into the store. It is no surprise she was put on hold when she called, the store is often very busy. Sent my mom there with a brand new Husqvarna weed trimmer that was still under warranty. Was used once and then when we attempted to use it a second time the following weekend, it would start but not stay running. Took it to Keith's (an authorized dealer according to Husqvarna's website). Took them FOUR WEEKS to fix the trimmer. Charged my mother more than $20 on something related to the carburetor which should have been covered under warranty. Now, it's not about the money. It was only 20 bucks. It was about the fact that it should have been covered under the warranty and Keith's didn't want to bother with contacting Husqvarna for the money so they collected it from my unknowing mother. I had a mower repaired there last year. Tune up etc the works. $165.00. I when I picked it up it wouldn't start. Nice!!!! Keith came out and had 2 of his guys working on it. I don't think that either of them had a clue what they were doing. After about 20 minutes the show was over and Keith informed me that there was something wrong with the choke. I told him that this is a spare mower for my rentals and I would not be using it till next year. He informed me that there's only a 60 day warranty. This year I needed the mower and it wouldn't start. I went and spoke to Keith and told him my situation. He wanted to charge me $50. To look at it and said that it sat too long!!!!. I went home and pulled out my old Toro that was sitting for 12 years. I put gas in it and it started on the 3rd pull. I have been dealing with Keith for over 30 years, new equipment, repairs, parts etc..... never again. anybody that gave him 5 stars must have been family. I purchased a Honda lawn mower from KPE 8 years ago and have returned yearly to have it serviced. In the past, it has taken 3-4 weeks for my mower to be serviced. My most recent saga, which began on 4/11/15 when I dropped off my mover, was the worse service I have experienced at KPE. I was notified on 5/20/15 that the mower could be picked up. That means that my mower was being serviced for 39 days. During those 39 days, I called KPE several times and even made a trip to the store. I was advised that the mower needed a carburetor part and that it "should arrive this week." I have a very healthy lawn so you can imagine how high my grass was after 39 days of not being cut. KPE recently lost an associate (ME). I wonder if his absence contributed to the very long service time. It also would have been nice if KPE took the initiative and provided service updates. read more

Unfortunately there was no option to rate Keiths Power Equipment with less than 1 star. I had a 2 stage snow blower that would start, but would not staying running. Several people I spoke with said it sounded like the choke. I brought it in and put a $50.00 deposit down as required. They called me and told me it was not fixable yet gave me an estimate of over $450.00 to repair it. However, I could come in and purchase a new one from them. I told them no, told them I would be picking it up and just them was told there was an additional fee to put it back together. I was shocked and so upset to see my once together snow blower returned to me disassembled and the parts they removed were in 2 plastic bags. now it is just scrap and I am out of $50.00. Why would a business not put back together a machine they tore apart? After talking to people about this they couldn't believe a business behaved like this. unfornately now, ive heard several other instances where they did "shotty" work and people would not send anyone to them. I went there because they are a local business. lesson learned. I am seeking reimbursement for my deposit in which I was returned scrap-first via email, then bbb if I have to. I disagree completely with the previous reviewer. I had the opportunity to talk at length with the owner, Keith, who demonstrated a breadth of knowledge and experience with generators. He solidified my decision to go ahead and have his son Scott's company, Emergency Power Solutions of Mokena, install a 20 kw GE whole house natural gas back up generator . Great job! Unlike all the generac dealers, he did not ask for a dime until the job was completed. Not one penny upfront. Also, he had the equipment in stock an had it installed within one week, rather than wait six to eight weeks for the generac. He also obtained the permit at no extra charge.
