So when I first stepped out of the elevator to the 10th floor of this hidden little building off a hidden little road off Queen's Road Central, and I saw that familiar red circle emblazoned with "People Love Us On Yelp", I knew I belonged. So I've always been loyal to one hairdresser back in Canada but I decided to shake things up and go to a salon in HK that 1) Wouldn't give me an 80's hairstyle 2) Wouldn't charge me insane amounts of money. A quick Google search turned up an SCMP article going into exquisite detail about The Attic, with a cut costing about HKD $400. Perfect. Calling in to reserve, they let me know that there are tiers of hairstylists. Junior stylists are about HKD $350, with master stylists over HKD $1000. Colouring started at HKD $800 with highlights and bleaching costing extra. All colouring has a HKD $50 consultation fee. Sounds good. They booked me in for a mid-tier $480 cut. So far, so good. The woman on the other end of the phone was informative and polite. The good service continues! I'm seated right at my appointment time in a bright, large, spacious area and offered a beverage right away. My stylist, Winky, comes over and discusses everything with me. I show her a picture, she clarifies a couple things and then I'm getting half my hair chopped off. A lot of people were surprised at how much I was taking off but I was never loyal to any particular hairstyle anyway. Winky was clearly a great stylist, but also great at customer service. She explained why she cut a certain part a certain way, how to keep my hair from flipping out, and what products to use. Maintenance is almost as important as the initial cut. During the cut, she gave advice on things like getting more layers, and I was happy to give her the go-ahead. The cut turned out fantastic, exactly what I wanted. I also wanted to re-highlight my hair, but that was way over my budget so Winky suggested I just colour my roots and not to touch my existing highlights. Didn't know that was an option! A hair technician took care of the colouring part. She worked quickly and efficiently, and the colour turned out great, blending seamlessly into my original colour. Also, because I had to get colouring done, I got my hair washed twice, which is always my favourite part. If I ever win the lottery, I'd indulge in 3rd party hair washing all the time. At the Attic, it was like a mini spa treatment.The room was dark, quiet, and fragrant with light flowery aromas. The girl even gave me a head massage. This is a premium salon so service matches expectations. Everyone is extremely polite and continuously offer beverages, biscuits, and tons of magazines. I gotta say, having a hot pot of earl grey keep me company makes the time pass by much faster. Even though tipping isn't a part of HK culture, hair salons are a bit of an exception. They have a really spacious location so it feels really nice and to be honest he seemed really busy, not sure how I lucked out and got him as a hairdresser. Anyways they offer you a selection of drinks and I got an excellent hair washer lady who have me a stress melting neck massage. Made me feel less tense from my awful original cancelled experience. JAN was polite detailed and very adamant about making sure I got what I wanted with my hair. He curled my hair at the end as well to show me a potential perm look. Very cold service but hey I am only looking for a haircut and not your smile. I understand the price for going to a normal stylist is considerably really cheap for this area, but that doesn't mean you deserve a bad haircut. My assigned stylist gave me a really bad haircut that is hardly even in bear eyes. Cutting long straight hair for ladies can't go too wrong, can it? Well I have a small chunk at the side significantly longer than the rest of the hair and a noticeable gap (not sure how he managed to do it) at my parted fringe. He explained to me this was the work of my previous hairdresser and there is nothing he can do about it.. In the end, he just blow-dry my hair into curls to cover this mistake. He is actually good at styling and doing blow-dry, but sorry you need some proper training in haircutting. However, not every one at mina are the same. My friend who went with me had a satisfying haircut and she plans to visit again next time. So my suggestion is if you ever go to this salon, make sure you either go for a senior stylist or avoid this bleached grey mushroom hair stylist who just doesn't give a sht .

While I enjoyed the long hair, I don't think my friends enjoyed as much when I came back to HK. My friend has been almost begging me to have a haircut, so I gave in, but on a condition that I could keep the hair and send them to NGO to make wigs for children suffering cancers. He then recommended his friend right next to him, Yoko, and she was happy to make that happen. Never in my life I'd think I could let a Japanese girl to handle my hair. But it was a breeze in the air. Location was pretty easy to access, right opposite to Fringe Club. You would be greeted by the staff, and they would offer you beverages. I almost felt bad getting white wine (in the middle of Tuesday afternoons?) so I went for the coffee. But it's entirely up to you, no one would judge... The hair washing and massaging was so comfortable I often fell asleep, that might give you a hint how good it was. While Yoko is coming from Japan she speaks perfect English. Most of the hairstylists have one single problem: they do it their way instead of the way they are told to do. Like if I ask to trim "a bit", they will go and trim an inch. The good thing about Yoko is she never does that, never goes over, and always does the exact right length or right style you ask for. And on top, while I'm a perfectly nice guy (HAHA), my hair isn't so. They are really hard to handle. I know a lot of guys would just pay $100 for a speed haircut, but I'd pay more to get it right. At one point I had two haircuts in the same day because the the first stylist screwed up so badly. I have no idea how Yoko handles it well from the very first time, but now I find the right one and I'm most probably not gonna switch to another one in a long time. Heads up though, Yoko is the boss and tends to be very busy, so use their online booking thingy to make it easier.

When I tried to remind him he told me that what he wanted to do was more fashionable. When I mentioned again that he was not doing what I had asked for he told me that if I didn't like it he could do it again or I would not have to pay. I wasted three hours of my life feeling anxious and uncomfortable and then was charged 3600 HK dollars, even after saying again that I was unhappy with the outcome. Would not recommend!
