Unlike the 40 or 50 quid you have to shell out for 5-a-side football facilities across the city, Knightswood Secondary gym hall is available for hire for a paltry ten pounds. The set-up is basic - an indoor hall, a couple of goals, small changing room and truly awful showers. However, the value for money is terrific, while the heat generated in the hall will ensure you sweat out all of the gunk that remains in your system from a rough weekend. Availability is an issue given it is used by many of the school's clubs, but it's defintiely worth enquiring about.

Glasgow Fiddle Workshop is the only place in Glasgow to offer teaching in a wide range of acoustic…read moreinstruments. On Mondays adults and children can choose to learn Guitar, Mandolin, Bodhran, Whistle, Singing, Tenor Banjo, Accordion and Harmonica. Wednesday nights are reserved for the tuition of Fiddle at many different levels and in different regional styles. Also on a Wednesday there are classes in Cello. The classes are taught in a workshop style usually set at three different levels: complete beginner, intermediate and advanced. So there really is a place for everyone. Tutors include: Lori Watson (Rule of Three), Anna Massie (Anna Massie Band, Kate Rusby Band), Mairearad Green (Anna Massie Band, The Poozies), Findlay Napier (Findlay Napier and the Bar Room Mountaineers), Marc Duff (ex-Caperceillidh), Ruairidh MacMillan (2009 Young Scottish Musician of the Year) and a whole host of other amazing teachers. This is an absoloutely gorgeous place. We went here recently for a function (ooo how grown up its…read morea function not a party :P) and it was absoloutely brilliant. Ill start with the decor, downstairs is a we shop like the kind you find in a museum which handily enough leads on to the museum of piping. We then go upstairs to a lovely hallway with blue illuminated stain glass windows and through into a large hall complete with tables, fantastic refurbished pillars, gorgeous ceiling designs and of course a stage and dance floor!! We also were treated to a buffet and this was fantastic from the ciabatta rolls stuffed with salad and meaty delights, to the chicken pieces and skewers and down to the cheese board the presentation and taste was fantastic! The only reason this place didnt get a 5 is its my first visit and that the heating was turned up to devil level with no apparent way to control it for the room full of people and that the bar prices were quite steep. But these aside the staff are wonderfully pleasent and welcoming and it will probably get a 5 if i return. Definetely a great place for a small wedding reception, birthday party or any other event that takes your fancy!!

Tucked into this building is the National Piping Center complete with a museum of bagpipes. It's…read moresmall but worth a look if you are curious about bagpipes. There's a little shop which is actually kind of a gift shop but actually kinda a piping shop. They have a host of stuff here including practice chanters and instructional books. The selection is small but a well curated set of two makers McCallum and R. G. Hardie. I bought a Hardie blackwood practice chanter and a book to take back to the States and annoy my neighbors. That said, it's an amazing instrument in its own right, even without the full set of pipes. The folks are friendly and not too knowledgeable on the instruments but twice a week they have a piper in the shop and she answered all my questions. Pretty cool.

Jordanhill...this is a strange one. I studied here for a year for my postgrad (the final year my…read morecourse was taught here before relocating to the John Anderson campus in the city centre) and I can't decide what to think of it. In terms of facilities and the services which are needed to create a thriving university, what's on offer at Jordanhill is poor. What used to be a swimming pool is just an empty shell and much of the campus has fallen into disrepair. Parts of the campus really are liking walking through a ghost town and you can almost imagine the life this place used to have. All the other facilties equally feel like token gestures - the library is tiny in comparison to the main one in the centre or Glasgow University's huge building, there is one small shop (the man working there is a gem though), the cafe is very limited and the 'union' (which is closed in the evening) doesn't sell alcohol except for an hour or so on a Friday. It's a strange experience to come from a university like Glasgow to this campus and many of my course mates dubbed it "Jordanhell". However, I have many fond memories of bonding over the empty cafe and ridiculous facilities and how Jordanhill became our little world for those nine months and I feel saddened by the fact that it is soon to be closed. I believe Strathclyde have sold (or are in the process of selling) this campus and it is likely to be turned into flats. Something, perhaps sentimentality, makes me want to protect this old place. It clearly has a lot of history and you can almost see its former beauty through all the cracks.
