They do have a nice selection of kids books and a little area for the kids to sit down and read in. The staff are very friendly and always available to help you. Only members of the University of Cambridge and Academic staff and research students from other universities can use it. Undergraduate and taught postgraduate students from other UK universities can apply to access the Library for reference during Cambridge vacations. Even if you can't get in, it is worth having a wonder round the site to be impressed by the sheer size of it. And why not keep walking and have a look around the Sidgwick site of the University of Cambridge - home to the Arts Faculties of the University.

Actually, if you're cheeky you can go to the Costa Coffee place upstairs and read there. The new library should open in Lion Yard next year. The reason for the delay? Apparently the developers are arguing with the council over whether it should be called 'Cambridge Central Library' or 'Cambridge Library Central.' I sh t you not.

I also order a lot of items online and if the Chelmsford library does not have a copy of an item then one is sent from another library in Essex at no charge - brilliant. They did have a coffee shop which I thought was a good idea but it has closed - I guess it did not do enough business.

I have often used this service and the books are shipped very quickly. The library has a large number of computers available for the public to use, but unfortunately you can only use them for up to an hour each day. I recommend booking these in advance as the bookings fill up a few days in advance. The cd selection is very broad and at small cost they can be borrowed for up to three weeks. Dvds are also much cheaper to borrow here than at other dvd borrowing stores.

While visiting the library I was disgusted to hear the manager, Michelle Jolly, mocking a disabled…read moreman using their computers. She made fun of his appearance and his verbal skills. She didn't realise that the man she was making fun of in front of me was actually my brother. He was a regular user of the library and usually went in once a week with a carer. I happened to be in with him on this day and was completely appalled. I made a complaint to the district manager but was ignored. I made a public complaint on their Facebook page and it was just deleted. I'm hoping this acts as a warning to others who use their services. This woman should be fired and has no business working in a public library.

Within the main building there is a completely seperate area for children which is seperated by a door and here they have story-telling sessions etc at pre-planned times. There are childrens chairs provided and plenty of books, videos and dvd's for the younger librarian. Within the main area there are computers for internet access and a wealth of books - some books are upstairs so disabled access could be difficult. The library also has a large notice board for local events/childminers etc and there are plenty of leaflets around the library telling of local events and any information that could be relevant to residents.

It is open for at least a couple of hours each day (except Sunday). Considering its comparatively diminuitive size, the library offers a surprising range of services, most of which are free for its members (it is free to join too - bring proof of ID and address): apart from a selection of books for adults and children, covering both fiction and non-fiction available for loan, there are DVDs and videos for hire (there is a charge for that), newspapers and magazines for consultation and a number of PCs with free internet access. Although the choice of volumes is not huge, one can consult the library network's online catalogue and order any of its books to be delivered for collection at the Cottenham branch for a small charge. The library is staffed by a team of friendly and professional librarians.
