They come twice a week and it's always pretty busy when we come, with a lot of other students enrolled. A tutor will sit with my Kindergarten age son because he can't yet work independently. My 2nd grade son is able to work mostly independently and a tutor will check on him. There's a cute little playground here that my sons like playing on afterwards. There's plenty of seating for parents who are waiting but you are also able to wait in your car if you like. I haven't had any issue with finding a parking space here either even though the parking lot is small. Ms Stacy is very responsive to emails and calls. You can set up a direct ACH from your bank account for the monthly payment. The time commitment is between 15-30 mins per day per child and per subject. Sometimes my sons do complain about having to do their Kumon but I think persistence and consistency is key I already see improvements in my Kindergartner and I think this is going to help him be reading a lot faster than if I relied only on his teacher at school to help him, plus I don't feel super confident in my ability to help him learn to read... this is more structured and easy to follow. During the summer, we had to work in one of the labs and the AC was broken FOR LIKE 2 WEEKS! It's torture because there's NO windows. There are places to sit and study or eat. The Engineering Advisor is also in this building.

I kinda love it how people what to have a little badge next to their name that says First to Review. I too have on purpose reviewed some worthy places that needed to have a page up on Yelp and yes I too happened to have a first to review star next to my name. Back to my running joke- Who wants to watch a Dissertation Defense? They are so much fun! Yeah, if you really are going for your PHD and are in the very same field as another student defending something not on your topic but from 1 or more of the same professors that will interview you live- then yes, you really should go out and watch a Dissertation Defense of a random person since they are open to the public just to mentally prepare for the tasks of explaining your standpoint on a very myopic topic that you have spent YEARS on that you may not realize have missed some of the more obvious questions that are usually asked. Also- it is a cool building to get away from people you are avoiding! Not cool as in "Victoria Secrets backstage VIP passes" cool but cool as in one of the buildings that has reliable AC in a muggy Manoa weather Cool. Classrooms are classrooms almost everywhere you go in the mainland- but not al UHM classrooms are equal as toooooo many are mobile trailers that DON'T have AC! Kuykendall, at least, has the tech needs of AC and AV that make for a good classroom for a modern prof to do his or her educational teaching tech needs fully. I got my MEd and had many classes in Kuykendall -so I liked it. I can't say the same for the other classroom settings that didn't have AC where I was dying (sic). Bathrooms- no they are not the freshest I have ever been in but the very nice thing about them is that there is always room for me or anyone to put their backpacks or books so that they don't have to go on the ground like in other public bathrooms. Halls- always fun to see what different Profs or students have put up on the boards- some great Far Side jokes all the way to the latest meeting of student organizations that can be beyond interesting. Noise level- quieter than one would assume in a college. I like UHM and Kuykendall was home to to many days and nights not to remember it well and go back happily knowing that homework is not due today. Until I have to be the one sitting watching a Dissertation Defense preparing for my own Prof to question me on my upcoming works. How do I know about the Dissertation Defenses and other programs? There is a robot email that you can sign up for if you are an alum or random person to know what is up with UHM events from different colleges like Language and Literature. The English department at the University of Hawaii-Manoa will always hold a special place in my…read moreheart. I spent 5.5 years (including summers) at UHM, and English was the only subject at the school I always knew I'd truly enjoy, excel at and obtain a degree in. As it turns out, my double major in journalism was just fodder to my true love of creative writing. It's been almost a decade since I've last been here for academic purposes, but I do recall a lot about the building, the faculty offices and the types of classes they offered. I liked most of my professors, and I looked forward to attending most of my classes, especially the upper-level, free-form ones. Although the English department is the largest in the UHM College of Languages, Linguistics, and Literatures (LLL), I strongly believe that its headquarters at Kuykendall are grossly underfunded and in need of major repair. There's an inadequate number of classrooms, sometimes the elevator (i.e., only one) doesn't work, hallways have poor lighting and AC is spotty (especially in faculty offices). It used to feel like a ghost town to me on many occasions, since not very many people hung out on the 2nd or 3rd floors despite all the available benches. I'm giving the English Department / Kuykendall Hall four stars because - even if it takes another decade or two to actually fund and implement - I still believe there's potential here for something great.

Besides educating students, WCC has hosted the Windward Ho'olaule'a (festival) with food trucks, craft vendors, live music, and hula performances. It has invited the public to view movies at The Hokulani Imaginarium (planetarium); showcased artwork from the ceramics studio; and most recently, held The Aloha Giveaway at the covered parking lot (solar panels are on the roof) near the entrance of the campus. I have attended Hawaiian concerts in the Paliku Theater - and Union meetings in one of the classrooms. The library and cafe were impressive - both were very organized, clean, and professional! This is such a beautiful campus where parking is free! I'm tempted to take a class or two here...

Street signs were posted with arrows guiding you to Hale Akoakoa Building, covid protocols are enforced including temp check's in the beginning, many staff ensuring seats and other touch surfaces are sanitized before the next person arrives, short application to be completed while in line, brief assessment with an MD, then you're seated with a nurse who administers your shot, moving to a quarantine area for 15 minutes should a patient have allergic reactions needing medical attention, checkout desk to validate your official vaccination card reminding you to make a copy of it for your PCP. Also complimentary cold water & Gatorade bottles are available upon request. I was beyond impressed with this process and how efficient it was as well as how wonderful each and every staff person/volunteer was that I interacted with.

Teaching your child to read and learn math is a daunting task, even for a motivated mom! I finally…read moregave in and signed up for Kumon to see if it would help! My daughter had just turned 4 when I started her at Kumon at Koko Head Elementary. She started in September with just one subject (reading) and had progressed so quickly, we started her on a second subject (math) a few months later. Now, don't get me wrong, it wasn't like she picked up either subject right away- it took a little time and patience going through the books...but it works! She's reading complete books now and understands basic math concepts at 4 years old! If you're coming from town, the building is "J" building- closest to Kal Hwy in the back left corner of the campus. Room is the first one as you approach the building. Best time to come is after 315pm- the school's students have usually cleared out and there are plenty of staff to help your child learn. Tons of parking on nearby streets and in the parking lot at this time. They offer specials and other incentives when you sign up your child- and Kumon has a online rewards program too. I think you will agree that it's totally worth the price to help your child learn and grow their minds! Many of the students are one or two grades ahead for both reading and math! Ms. Lisa, Ms. Liz and Ms. Ann are all great with working with young students. I'd highly recommend starting your child in Kumon!

The only place I have to compare this to is sylvan learning center, and I must say I'm happy with…read morewhat my kids get from the work they do here. Main difference aside from price ($400 for math and reading, compared to $1300-1500 monthly) is the amount time the kids need to put in. At sylvan it's two or three times a week with nothing to do at home. At kumon you go twice a week and take home homework, which is to be completed daily. Also sylvan you more or less drop them off and pick them up, vice the the daily homework involvement.

It took him 4 years and 4 months -- started from Level B (Addition & Subtration) in May 2011, and completed Level O (Calculus) yesterday (Sept 3, 2015)! As I reflect, I now realize that my son learned more than just math at Kumon. He also built confidence in himself and learned time management, goal setting, how to be a self-learner, and perservance! Yes, the Kumon work does get harder with each level. But, the Matsumoto's and their staff are so nurturing, encouraging and patient, that it just motivated my son to continue and finish. I remember my son's first goal was to build his math skills to enter Punahou School. He entered the school at 6th grade, scoring almost 690 out of 700 on the Math portion of the SSAT. His most recent goal was to complete the Kumon Math program by the start of 7th grade so he had enough free time to pursue other activities. He accomplished that goal yesterday! I also found that you, as a parent, have control on the stress level of Kumon. The Matsumotos were great at working on this with us. They increased and reduced packet sizes as needed so the workload didn't interfere with his school and sports activities, and that the Kumon homework itself wasn't too stressful, too challenging or too easy. Thank You Kumon Kaimuki! You turned my son's dreams into reality ... dreams we once thought were unimaginable!

A bus would pick me up from school and my grandpa would wait for me out front and we'd walk home together. As I got older and my grandparents did too, my grandma began coming here for a sense of community. She was able to connect with other elders and have activities to participate in. The Mo'ili'ili Community Center has always been a staple in the community and my only hope is that it can get some much needed updates to be able to continue supporting this special community for the keiki and kupuna that live in it.
