I know my household is not the only one who will miss them but they do get mad busy sometimes so I imagine their flash new shop will be worth the wait. The thing I love about this place is mainly the fact that the family that run it are so friendly and hardworking. I also know that anything I buy from here will be good - if it's not perfectly fresh and tasty, they don't sell it. Everyone has had those times with the bad bag of kiwifruit or floury apples or whatever, but if that happened here they would be so embarrassed and no doubt give you your money back. It's that kind of place; they CARE. The pricing is excellent and I've seen them help people carry their stuff to the car, give free pieces of fruit to cute littlies and genuinely be a cornerstone to the Balmoral community - it's like the pub for busy mums; if I haven't seen someone in a while, odds are I will run into them here.

Bulk Foods stock a very wide range of products, including dried fruits, nuts, organic products, flours and cereals, and all sorts of international food I'd never even heard of. Pepperdews, pomegranate molasses, Ceres organics muesli for only $9 and literally the biggest jar of gherkins I have ever seen - Bulk Food Savings was a delight to explore. I was stoked to find pure vanilla extract and vanilla pods in this store - they were much cheaper than at places like Nosh, and are great to use in baking. The only downside of Bulk Foods was the staff. They weren't particularly inviting nor were they very friendly, but hey - when the variety of food is that good and the prices are so low, who cares? You can't have everything! Bonus: It smells fantastic in Bulk Foods - all the different spices merge in to one mouth-watering fragrance that instantly inspires you to cook delicious Indian curries.

Well firstly because places like this are almost always cheaper, and Fresh Fruit World is no exception. But also, sometimes you just don't want to have to deal with the supermarket. You don't want access to every product under the sun, you just want four items and three of them are vegetables and one of them is bread. You don't want to have to go through the entire supermarket just for that, and that's why Fresh Fruit World is so ideally placed where it is. Also the staff are nice, at least when I've been there.

There is a large section for grains, lentils and other pulses, nuts, dried fruits and spices, all natural and unprocessed. There is also a range of Italian and Japanese ingredients, oils, pastas and canned legumes. They stock fresh wraps, pita bread and they sell tofu. You could probably do most of your shopping here. If this is sounding too healthy there is also a junky section with candy, corn chips and cookie time cookies and I suspect they sell quite a bit of that stuff. The staff at the store are super friendly too and the prices are very good. What more can you ask for really?

The shop itself though has just got better and better over the last few years and now is a really great general supermarket that has bargain prices and exotic products. There's more noodles than anyone could ever want to eat and rice, dried beans and condiments galore. The flavour pastes and fresh produce are my favourites here and there's also a smattering of foodstalls on one side that make Asian snacks; my favourite being the pancakes. I'm also partial to a bit of Plum Wine and this place has it, along with Asian beers etc. And I still just can't help but marvel over all the crazy dried funghi, fish innards and the like that are so foreign to me - I got to say it, these days Auckland has pretty much every curious food ingredient available which can only be a good thing.

Several times I've asked if they have extra stock out the back of a particular item and staff have always been friendly and courteous. The layout is easy to navigate and the produce always stacked nicely on display. They also have a decent selection of nuts and dried fruits, as well as ethnic foods. I like to buy my wraps from here, and they have delicious fresh bagels and paninis for sale too. Also check out the frozen dumplings etc in the cool stores at the front of the shop!

Other things like Swiss chocolate, honey, Danny's pita bread, coconut butter and fortune cookies can be found here too. The staff are really polite, the quality of the produce is good and so are the prices. There is lots of parking on site too which is great because parking in Newmarket can be a bit of a hassle so if you're passing through give it a go.
