Me and my all time favorite emcee!!
Tonya B.

I came to Radio One (FM stations 92.1, 97.9, 102.1), because I won backstage passes to Boom Bash 2. (On a whim, I entered a text contest and actually won and actually met Run DMC, Ramim, MC Lyte, etc., etc...) It was simple matter of picking up tickets and signing paperwork with the gentleman at the front desk. He was nice. (I was impressed by the meet and greet staff at the concert.) Parking: This is a building that houses many of the local radio stations. They tell you not to park on the street, but you can. Just don't park in the restricted areas. READ THE SIGNS, because you will get a ticket.

This station promotes racism. I hear them daily while at work. While some of the content is decent the rest is negative.

In fact, this is the only radio station in the USA that's ever been bombed in an effort to get it off the air. Not just once, but twice the KKK bombed this station to get them to keep quiet. But this radio station isn't very good at staying quiet- what good radio stations remain quiet? They came back each time louder and better! They do a lot of political talks on this station. Get ready for a lean to the left. But my favorite part is when they play the eclectic foreign music- especially the Bollywood music. There's just something great about jamming to the sitar while cruising down Westheimer. It's Houston's home to Al Jazeera on the radio dial. The DJs are kinda special. They just run their own show, which they're interested in. It's not like they're all spinning the same music. I think they're all volunteers. I believe that if you have an idea for a show, they'll let you show up and broadcast if you ask nicely enough!

Check KTRU's website for the weekly roundup of specialty shows, covering genres including reggae,…read morepost punk, folk/Americana, noise, and electronica. The station also broadcasts a few Rice sports games, the occasional in-station performance, and some special campus events. In the rare instances when a DJ isn't around, KTRU broadcasts WRN (the World Radio Network) or its new "robotic" DJ takes over (pre-recorded sets). You can make requests online or over the phone; set lists are available online. KTRU also hosts a wonderful, free outdoor show every spring on the Rice campus. You don't have to be a student to DJ. DJ application deadlines are in the fall, spring, and summer. KTRU is generally acclaimed as one of the best college stations in the country, but though I DJ'd there for 6 years I don't have the concrete info on that at my disposal (will update later with real info).

On select nights there are themes that the station follows covering all genre's of music, even genre's one wouldn't imagine exists. At times, weekends from midnight on fro, the station becomes a bizarre bazaar as if the station is on auto-pilot and its media player plays all songs at random which makes for good entertainment, great entertainment when herbally induced. However, this is rare. Most of the time you'll get something you'd have to be bored out of your mind to hear. Cuul ppl preset 91.7
