In fact, this is the only radio station in the USA that's ever been bombed in an effort to get it off the air. Not just once, but twice the KKK bombed this station to get them to keep quiet. But this radio station isn't very good at staying quiet- what good radio stations remain quiet? They came back each time louder and better! They do a lot of political talks on this station. Get ready for a lean to the left. But my favorite part is when they play the eclectic foreign music- especially the Bollywood music. There's just something great about jamming to the sitar while cruising down Westheimer. It's Houston's home to Al Jazeera on the radio dial. The DJs are kinda special. They just run their own show, which they're interested in. It's not like they're all spinning the same music. I think they're all volunteers. I believe that if you have an idea for a show, they'll let you show up and broadcast if you ask nicely enough!

I especially enjoy playing air drums to "When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin. That song causes a pile-up every time. But the Arrow is just lame. As a barometer of their lameness, you'll hear the Aerosmith version of "Come Together" more often than you'll hear the original version. I think two guys got together and went to a garage sale, where they bought ten albums apiece. On the way home, they decided to start a radio station. They lost three albums on the way home, but that didn't stop them. Some twenty-some years on, nobody's bought more albums. Two of the original albums purchased are by the Alan Parsons' Project. Dean and Rog are pretty lame too, but they are total genius compared to the two halfwitted bigots who do the morning show now. Walton and Johnson sound like they're broadcasting from the bait shop, drinking lousy coffee, spitting tobacco, and talking about how commies and coloreds are running their great country down, playing reliable warhorses like "Dust in the Wind" and "Bad to the Bone" between jeremiads. But if it's trenchant political commentary you're looking for, you can go to the left of the Arrow and listen to NPR; that is, if you have the tolerance for Balkan wedding music. Who needs car accidents? When you listen to the Arrow, you can have one in your own car.

The Arrow is Houston's signature "Classic Rock" station. If you go to their website, you can…read moreimmediately grasp who their targeted audience is. Front and center is a link to "The Arrow Babe Pages" which is filled with hundreds of pictures of bikinis stretched over silicon-enhanced curves and guaranteed to get a rise out of the 35 to 50 year old male segment of our population who have nothing better to do than ogle 'em while listening to ZZ Top. Almost by definition, a classic rock station is going to have a limited play list. The Arrow takes this concept seriously which might explain their need to appeal to a market segment with an average IQ of 75 - after all, being bludgeoned by the same tunes daily over a period of decades could seriously threaten anyone's mental health. I love classic rock myself. It defines my generation. So I will listen to The Arrow if it's playing a song that reminds me of my youth. But sit through a morning of Dean and Rog? Their potty talk and teenage T&A mentality is incredibly tiresome. I'd rather lobotomize myself! (Perhap I would start enjoying them then). The other reason I'm doling out only two stars? They rarely play Springsteen. Sheeesh!

The station also broadcasts a few Rice sports games, the occasional in-station performance, and some special campus events. In the rare instances when a DJ isn't around, KTRU broadcasts WRN (the World Radio Network) or its new "robotic" DJ takes over (pre-recorded sets). You can make requests online or over the phone; set lists are available online. KTRU also hosts a wonderful, free outdoor show every spring on the Rice campus. You don't have to be a student to DJ. DJ application deadlines are in the fall, spring, and summer. KTRU is generally acclaimed as one of the best college stations in the country, but though I DJ'd there for 6 years I don't have the concrete info on that at my disposal (will update later with real info).

On select nights there are themes that the station follows covering all genre's of music, even genre's one wouldn't imagine exists. The radio station also is where the students cut their teeth and spin their tunes to the student body, as well as the public at large! I think if you become a TSU student, you can have your very own radio show and you can spin (almost) anything you wanna on the air. Since it's a non-profit station, there's no real advertisements on this station. They have the occasional public service announcement, and are always good about giving the time and weather. They do a great job of playing cool stuff to spread the cultural stuff that the students are into over the radio waves. I enjoy how each students' show has a different style of music- ranging from R&B to rap to Zydeco. This station plays it all. If you don't like music, just give it an hour or two, and a new DJ will step in the booth and crank out something different. They occasionally get into the news. They have a request line, but I've always been content to let them spin their own stuff without my guidance. It's your community station! Tune in!

If only there were a bunch of nerd-geeks one could call for help - an oracle of technology and eternal wisdom that could sift through those ten thousand results and give you some sort of an honest and real answer. This bunch of geeks exists, and they are at your beck and call. Oh, the humanity! Trolling about the radio dial back in 1996, I happened across something very odd and very cool: some call-in show about computers with people calling in with questions about everything from how to save a Word document to being helped with installing a CD-ROM drive. Back then, the program was known by the cryptic name Radio X, but now it's called Technology Bytes, and after eleven-and-a-half years on the air, it's still going strong. Hosted by its founder, Jay Lee, along with original co-host Peter Hughes, the show now sports among its regular co-hosts Dwight Silverman (who writes a tech column for the Houston Chronicle), Groovehouse, Barrett Canon, and phliKtid. Technology Bytes can be heard on KFPT 90.1 FM radio on Wednesdays from 8:00pm to 10:00pm fifty-two weeks a year. And yes, you really can phone in (and actually have a good chance of getting through so long as you get in the queue in the first half of the show) and get your questions addressed with a strong dose of irreverent humor. Over the years I've listened, I've phoned in several times. These guys are all volunteers, and this is for them a labor of love: getting more people onto technology and the positive benefits it can give society, but it's more than just that. It's a program filled with self-deprecating personality and wit.
