This is a small shoe shop on Cheltenham Road, near the arches, specialising in a few specific brands of footwear, most notably Dr Martens. It feels like a real shoe shop (like the kind I went to as a kid, where they would actually measure my feet and someone would have to bring the shoes out from the back in order for me to try them on). I don't know why this surprised me so much, but I suppose that I've become used to the cheap chain stores where you're left to your own devices and have to half guess if the particular pair of trainers you've picked up actually fit. It was a nice surprise, I have to say, although once I looked at the price of some of the footwear on offer and I certainly remembered the cost that comes with this kind of service. However, the expense is a measure (pun intended) of the quality in a place such as this, and you know what they say - you get what you pay for.

The shop is a tiny little shop, with leather in a pile, a heavy duty sewing machine, and many finished shoes in racks. All the shoes are handmade, and he has been making these for 20 years. What an amazing skill, and I am so happy that this shop is still around. It's a great shop to get sandals, slippers, and doc martenesque shoes where you get to meet the man who makes them! He does repairs too, so bring on down your old shoes and him and his elves will fix them up good. If you need a good boot, or some sandals for the summer, don't go to the high street; come here instead for something different!

Having been in the game for some twenty seven years Phil has set up shop in central Bristol in his shop space / working space. Being something of a small time craftsman myself I have from time to time popped in to get information and advice. The shoes, bags, belts and leather accessories are all made on site and of good quality. The shoe designs are unique and can be made to measure even the tiniest of paws and the biggest of loafers. This is also a good place to bring any leather goods that need repairing. A good place indeed to see people, not machines, hard at work doing what they love.

Do you see what they've done? It's a play on words. They've used the word 'solelution'…read moredeliberately because it sounds like the word solution. The intention is a suggestion that this place can solve all your woes, sole related. Wonderful, except I couldn't see any fish anywhere. Anywhere. This place sell shoes. Unfortunately not shoes I like. Standard shoe shop with expensive ranges I've never heard of. This is not surprising though as I have no fashion taste at all. I wear clothes because I have to. This is probably the best shoe shop in Portishead. Sorry, the only shoe shop in Portishead (that I know of). I hope this helps. Bye.

They've recovered from that though and are back in business. This is somewhere for sensible shoes. I got trooped up here regularly in my youth as I outgrew my school shoes or put holes in them. I wasn't the sort of kid that likes buying shoes (actually, do any?) but the staff managed to get me to sit down, trot around in various pairs, and say which ones I liked, so hats off to them. Actually having people to help fit your shoes is so important, I reckon. It's all too easy to get some with a slight rub, which then turns out to give you blisters for the next four months. They've got a huge stock (they're especially good for half sizes), making them good if you need something very specific. The shoe repair service they do is cheap and quick. Furthermore, they seem to sell fairly sturdy stuff - nothing that'll fall apart within two weeks of your taking it home. They're a great place to get comfy work shoes that'll last you for a while.
