They treated the wrong tooth (not the one I have a problem with and went in for)- All they could say is it was the one I was referred for, but it's not the one I went in for and has been and is still bothering me. Idk why I even had to pay for work on a tooth I had no problem with. A simple check or "time out" procedure like done for surgical procedures could have prevented this since referrals can obviously be wrong! read more

I can't say enough good things about my experience at Kauai Endodontics! As someone with a high tolerance for pain (think: botox without numbing cream and i have several tattoos), I was still a bit apprehensive about getting a root canal. But from the moment I walked in, I felt at ease. The front desk staff, especially Lynn, were so friendly and helpful in getting me checked in. Tyra was phenomenal - she explained everything thoroughly before taking x-rays of my troublesome tooth. I really appreciated that she took the time to ensure I was comfortable with each step. Once I met with Dr. Chu, he was able to quickly diagnose that I needed a root canal based on my symptoms. Even better - he had time that very day to take care of it! The procedure itself was quick and virtually painless. Dr. Chu and his assistant Maile talked me through each part, making sure I was okay. At just over 30 minutes, it was done before I knew it. I'm grateful that the expert team at Kauai Endodontics was able to see me so quickly and make a usually unpleasant experience as comfortable as possible. I was referred to Dr. Siegel by a neighbor a few months ago when my teeth were giving me grief. I'm one of those people who avoids the dentist at all costs--usually waiting until the pain is unbearable before finally dragging myself in, only to be met with even more pain. Fun times, right? Let me tell you, fun and compassionate dentists are rare. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever met one--until I met Dr. Siegel. He's incredibly smart, passionate about his field and his patients, and somehow makes sitting in that dreaded chair a breeze. I came in with a few cracked teeth and an infection, and Dr. Siegel walked me through the process in a way that was both detailed and easy to understand. He assured me that the fix was painless and that I was in great hands. And he was right. Not only was the procedure completely pain-free, but I actually dozed off in the chair.... Who knew a root canal like procedure could be so relaxing? (I believe it was a endodontic retreatment?) Dr. Siegel is by far the gentlest dentist I've ever had, and coming from someone who has a fear of dentists, that's saying something. I even found myself going home to research the procedure because he made it so interesting. Honestly, I just wish I could go to him for all my general dentistry needs. Dr. Chu did a root canal under a cap a few years back: the tooth started giving me pain again, so my dentist referred me back to Dr. Chu. I hand-delivered the referral at his office, and they said they weren't seeing me in the database and would need to use a different system and would call back later. They never called back. I called a few weeks later, and they had me in the system, but told me they no longer accepted my insurance and I would need to pay $2000 up front, and they would help with recovering from the insurance company later. I was traveling to the mainland, so saw an Endodontist there, who did accept my insurance that capped his rate at $1500, but said the insurance company would only cover 50% of the $1500 charge, rather than normal 80% coverage, as this was rework they had already paid for... so I dodged a bullet, as Dr Chu would have cost me $1250 out-of-pocket (and I was able to get the rework for $750... the difference pays for the roundtrip to the mainland). Furthermore, the Endodontist found that the infected root canal had been totally missed in Dr Chu's prior attempt, which the Endodontist (I went to on the mainland) did not mince words on his disdain for the prior work. YMMV, but I'm not going back. I also recall that visit to Dr. Chu was the most painful dental experience I'd ever had. read more

If Dr. Chu was the only root canal doctor in the state of Hawaii, I'd go out of the state for treatment. I was referred to him for a root canal. His chair side manor was was rude, abrupt, rough and hurried. He kept me waiting for 55 minutes. When I expressed my nervousness, he told me to reschedule rather than offer a smile or word of comfort. He demonstrated poor judgement in administering anesthesia, as he had to yank all his apparatus out of my mouth twice to give me enough anesthesia. I nearly cried with pain as his drill hit the nerve twice! The worst part of this whole horrible and expensive experience is that the tooth still gives me pain so I will probably have to have the tooth removed. read more

I had a root canal done yesterday by Dr. Chu and I feel terrific. My initial visit was real good and I felt pretty good about everything, but after all the horror stories that I was told about the procedure I was preparing for the worst. But from the time I walked in the door it was nothing but pleasing. Lynn greeted me and Nina, I think, went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. Then Dr. Chu came and talked to me and I began to relax. Well with No pain and only taking half as log as I was told, by others, I was on my way home. I felt pretty good yesterday and and 100% today. From my first contact with Lynn at the frint desk to ultimately getting a root canal from Dr. Chu I couldn't have been treated better! They treated me like I was family. If I had to get a root canal on vacation this experience was the best I could hope for. The only pain was the novacaine shot which is to be expected. The team took plenty of xrays before, during and after. They all truly listened and cared about how I was doing. I was having a great time in Kauai last week... unfortunately I cracked my tooth on a rice cake of all things. Long story short I had a cavity n I needed to get a root canal. I was going to wait to get back home but I was in a lot of pain and I was referred to see Dr. Chu at Kauai Endodontics. I've never even heard of an endodontist before!! I was a little "difficult" let's say. But the staff was very patient n friendly. I was suprised they were able to see me so quickly. And I didn't have to wait that long to be seen. The time went by quickly n I was able to keep my mind off of the cavity because the lady at the front desk asked me about my trip, etc. She was so sociable that I felt like I was chatting with a friend. The assistant was also friendly. The equipment was clean and looked better than the equipments that I've seen at my previous dentist office. Dr. Chu was surprisingly gentle, I even fell asleep for a little bit! I was really nervous. He explained the process n was very patient n reassuring. After the root canal he took a few minutes to explain what the side effects might be n what I should do if it happens. I recently visited Kauai with some relatives, and during our trip, my ten year old cousin complained of constant throbbing toothache pain. Since he was visiting and it would be awhile before he could return to his home in the mainland, I was referred to Dr.Chu by my dentist on Oahu and considering how urgent this case was, Dr.Chu and his staff were more than helpful to get us in as soon as possible to address my cousin's dental issues. The staff was so welcoming upon our arrival, they greeted me and my cousin with such warmth that my cousin slightly felt more assured as we sat down. We were quickly met by Dr.Chu, a genuinely professional individual that invoked such confidence that I could tell right away that my cousin was in good hands. Upon observation, Dr.Chu diagnosed that my cousin required a root canal. I myself have never had a root canal done, thus I was concerned for my cousin. Dr.Chu noticed my concern and took the time to breakdown the procedure, carefully answer all of my questions, and at the same time, comforted my cousin to where he was relaxed and ready for the procedure. After a quick and successful procedure, Dr.Chu was very personable, inquiring about our visit and even offered some recommendations as what to check out on the beautiful Garden Isle. I would like to thank Dr. Chu and his staff, Lynne, Joanna, and Veronica for the help they all gave me a week ago when I had two root canals. I had never had a root canal before and therefore had many questions and concerns. Their responses were complete and I never felt hurried or burdensome. Though I am certain no one would consider such a procedure pleasurable, I have to say my comfort was always addressed and I never felt out of the loop. I was referred to see Dr Chu because of pain I was having on an old root canal.When I made the appointment it was very quick and easy plus the appointment was scheduled less than 2 weeks later. I was rather nervous since this was my first visit with Dr. Joseph Chu for a root canal and I didn't know what to expect. Upon check-in, I was warmly welcomed by Lynn the receptionist, and shortly after Chelsey prepped me for my root canal. Her professionalism, calming demeanor, and assertiveness assured me that I was in good hands, which put me at ease. For the very first time in my life, a hygienist placed every single x-ray film precisely in the perfect spot of my small jaw with no pain or cutting of my gums. A+ for Chelsey! When Dr. Chu entered the room, I started getting nervous again, but then their combined professionalism overcame my fears. Very reassuring, calming voices and step by step Dr. Chu letting me know what to expect in advance. Dr. Chu kept asking me, "Are you okay?" Even the shot to numb my gum felt like a painless mosquito bite. The entire root canal procedure was rather relaxing, non stressful and absolutely painless. I'm not exaggerating, but I've had a routine cleaning that hurt 10 times more then my root canal with Kaua'i Endodontic. Lastly, I was very impressed to see the most high tech and up-to-date dental equipment for my dental procedure, let alone the entire exam room was spotless & very sterile. So sweet, caring, nurturing, patient, kind, caring, familial style people all around, and from our experience and others experience, great at what they offer. Clean, cool office building and new equipment. Microscopic use gave great hope for a job well done! My boyfriend needed a surprise root canal after grinding his teeth pretty hard over time (and having old, old fillings not re-done) . Ended up cracking a filling, the tooth (major ouch oh no!), and having that lead to start of infection down to root. Ugh! Got referred by kalaheo dentist to Dr Chu after having a couple weeks of pain deciphered (from head to jaw to tooth). Read great reviews online and had personal backer who had seen him years ago. We love the people and care they took of us, the receptionist, hygienist, assistant, other staff we met are all ... Wow, super super sweet... We felt like family. Looking forward to somehow being in touch (we live on a different part of island) with them (not for root canals?!). I am so intrigued by medical work that I wanted to be in the room during the procedure and they were so welcoming. Can see dr chu being amazing with people who have anxiety as well as with children.
