As I was walking to the restroom and looking down at the floor (and luckily I was) I noticed crickets creeping around. I'm not too freaked out by crickets, but I felt that the rest of the establishment was probably pretty filthy. Possibly other insects crawling/eating food items around the store. Yikes! Just think about that for a minute the next time you grab a drink or food item. The bathroom was a typical bathroom at a gas station. It was definitely no Buc-ee's. I would have gone elsewhere, but I really needed to use the bathroom.

No, there is no gas here. But back in 1927, E.F. Boydston built it as a gas station. Later, he…read moredecided to cover its exterior with chunks of petrified wood, perhaps inspired by a similar gas station in Colorado, or by Petrified Wood Park in South Dakota. E.F. covered the walls of his next-door cafe and tourist cabins as well (One of the motor court cabins was supposedly rented by Bonnie and Clyde a couple of weeks before they died). The cafe closed in 1964, the cabins around 1970, the gas station in 1988. They all passed into the hands of Nancy Rosendahl, one of E.F.'s grandchildren. She and her husband Jim, a retired nuclear engineer, told us that "we didn't have the heart to tear it down," and spent the next decade restoring the entire complex to its post-WWII glory days, which they said peaked around 1953. The old gas pumps are still out front but the interior has been remodeled as a personal office. There is parking and the place definitely photographs well. It's interesting and worth a stop to see. I would not have otherwise stopped in Decatur other than to see this. [Review 16104 overall - 284 in Texas - 1609 of 2021.]

The men's was closed for cleaning but it wasn't actually being cleaned it was just blocked off. I politely asked the young woman if I could use the restroom and she said I could not because they had just mopped the floor. I pointed out that the women's restroom seemed available with the door open and the light off and wondered if I could use that one. "WE JUST TOLD YOU WE MOPPED THE FLOORS!!!" (Responded a 60 year ish lady with all white hair and rimmed glasses) I responded oh that one as well? One of my favorite aspects of traveling is discovering local food--it's a unique way to connect…read morewith the places I visit. During a recent trip to North Texas to celebrate a family birthday, my brother-in-law (and bestie) insisted I try a burrito from a regional gas station chain. Now, I know what you're thinking: "Gas station burrito? Really?" But if there's one thing I believe, it's that you can find delicious food anywhere. So, as we were heading out of town, we made a stop at Allsup's to try their famous Beef and Bean Burrito. Allsup's is a regional convenience store chain, primarily in New Mexico, West Texas, and Oklahoma, that's been serving up these burritos for over 50 years. With over 400 locations, they sell more than 27 million of these burritos every year. Although they're called burritos, they're more like chimichangas since they're deep fried to crispy perfection. Each Allsup's Beef and Bean Burrito is handmade with slow-cooked beans, beef, cheese, and a special blend of spices, all wrapped up and deep fried. The story behind these burritos is pretty cool too--they started in the 70s when a sales associate decided to deep fry the burritos to boost sales, and the rest is history! So, how did it taste? Honestly, it was the best gas station burrito or chimichanga I've ever had. It's hands-down better than any frozen, fast food, or fast casual version I've tried. The burrito was delicious, crave-worthy, and smothered in Allsup's taco sauce, which was the perfect pairing.
