Buying a home in Berkeley is challenging under the best of circumstances, and my eventual purchase…read morewas anything but typical. An unexpected opportunity arose to buy a home off-market, and Amy and Dana immediately jumped in to help me navigate a process that required strategy, creativity, and thoughtful judgment. Throughout the entire experience, I felt like I had true advisors in my corner.
I'm a very analytical person, and I make decisions by digging deeply into the details. Amy and Dana never made me feel like I was "too much." They happily worked through spreadsheets, estimates, renovation costs, and countless questions with me. At the same time, they were excellent at helping me zoom back out and focus on what actually mattered. They helped me understand which issues were significant, which were simply part of owning an older Berkeley home, and where it made sense to spend my mental energy. They also understood my practical priorities and consistently steered me away from properties with risks I knew I wanted to avoid, such as fault, fire, or slide zones and homes with features likely to create long-term maintenance concerns.
One of the moments that best demonstrates their expertise came during negotiations. The seller had unrealistic pricing expectations, and my instinct was to try to persuade her with market data and comparable sales. Amy and Dana understood both the market and the seller far better than I did. They advised me to step back and let the seller come to us. It was completely counter to my instincts, but I trusted them--and they were right. Their strategy ultimately led to the seller reducing the price before we went under contract and then negotiating an additional reduction after inspections uncovered significant issues.
During the negotiation and escrow process, my father was hospitalized and ultimately passed away. Amy and Dana could not have been more compassionate or supportive. They took so much off my plate, kept everything moving, and gave me the space to focus on my family during an incredibly difficult time. I will always be grateful for that.
Even after closing, they've continued to be an incredible resource--connecting me with trusted contractors, answering countless homeowner questions, helping me think through sequencing and prioritizing work on the house, and generously sharing their knowledge. They're knowledgeable, strategic, responsive, practical, and genuinely enjoyable to work with. They also have a great sense of humor, which made an often stressful process much more manageable.
More than anything, I came away feeling that this wasn't just a successful transaction--it was the beginning of a long-term relationship with advisors I trust. I recommend Amy and Dana wholeheartedly to anyone looking to buy or sell a home!
