If you are looking at reviews for the Katarina then you probably read my last one (see below) where I absolutely slated it. So, in the interests of fairness I am now giving it a second review.
My previous visit there was an unmitigated disaster and after a lot of complaining to Mitchell and Butlers who own the chain, I got a call from the regional manager. he listened to my moaning (very patiently) and explained that a new manager and chef had been put into the Katarina, he also sent me a complimentary meal voucher to go back and try it again.
I returned on Saturday along with my family and I have to say the experience could not have been more different. I introduced myself to the new manager on arrival, but I really don't think I was given 'special treatment' as the whole ambiance of the restaurant had changed. This time we were pleasantly greeted (which, in fairness, had happened last time too). However, this time the waitress was at our table within a couple of minutes of sitting down and taking our drink orders. Our group ordered a variety of dishes, I had steak, my wife had fish and my son had sausage and chips. Everything was absolutely perfect, I have my steak rare and I can honestly say that the last time I had such a good steak was in France...English chefs (for some reason) never get a rare steak quite right...but this one was spot on. The fish was cooked beautifully and the sausage and chips...well you can't really go wrong can you!!. We also had a lovely desert and we were really well attended to throughout.
Quite obviously we were well looked after because of my previous complaint but, funnily enough, my aunt had been in the week before so I asked her about her experience there....she said just the same as me, a good meal and great service, so therefore top marks!!! A really nice experience.

Now we all know what to expect from a Harvester, let's face it if you want a Michelin experience it wouldn't be top of your list. That said I have always found the meals to be of a reasonable standard and the staff polite and attentive...until I visited the Katarina.
I went one lunchtime in the week between the Easter Holiday and the Royal Wedding holiday so was fairly surprised to find it not even half full, so when my 'greeter' said service would be a bit slow as they were so busy I had to do a bit of a double take. She certainly wasn't joking, we waited 10 minutes for a waitress. When we ordered our drinks she told us our choice of drink wasn't available as it was 'very popular'...duhhh order more then!!!
So I had the ubiquitous all you can drink coke, now I have no idea what that brown stuff coming out of the machine was but it sure as hell wasn't coke, best I can say is it was brown and fizzy! So then we went to their 'unique selling point' namely the free salad bar. I have to say if a few new potatoes in mayo, a bowl of tomatoes and some green peppers make a salad..then I'm a Dutchman! Believe it or not the peppers were actually off as well...I have kept peppers in my fridge, it take a while for them to actually be off....but they managed it at the Katarina! During my 45 (yes 45) minute wait for the food I amused myself watching the lady behind me trying to cut into a steak....she eventually managed it but judging by the way she was chewing it she may need serious dental work now... believe it or not she didn't even complain when the bill came even though the steak was barely touched. So then the food arrived.....burnt to a cinder and totally inedible, by this time even my English reserve had left me and I called over the waiter, listed all the things wrong and said we'd pay for my wife's J20 as that was the only thing they had got right but we wanted to leave. He gave me what I can only describe as 'a look' and huffed off....leaving us sitting there, no apology, no 'I'll fetch the manager' nothing. So we left, bill unpaid, they obviously didn't care so why should we?
I quite obviously complained to the head office who told me the manager would contact me about my complaint within 7 days (obviously he has a lot of complaints to get through!!). Needless to say he never called!!! Absolutely appalling, avoid it like the plague! read more
