While my experiences with the much raved about bagel sandwiches has been subpar, I am in love with their various breads. Grab a slice of their dark chocolate orange bread and a large cappuccino alongside and bask in a study spot where the workers are automatically speaking English and that's full of very important people belonging to, oh, the European Union. I go there 2-3 times a week and I really do like their Vanilla Iced Latte (I'm pretty much addicted, to be honest) and carrot cake, but it's pretty expensive and the baristas aren't always in a good mood. The space is cosy and with a cute quiet terrace in the back for sunny days, which is very nice. To sum up, I think the place could be great and would deserve a four-star rating if the people were more welcoming, or at least it would justify that you pay 4euros for your Iced Latte. Total hipster place and quite overrated. The environment and the vibe is cool, the food a bit less. It's a place for bagels but most of what they served is microwaved or pre-cooked. I've eaten there quite a few times on my way to work but I was not impress with the quality of the foods. Their coffees and juices are good. I recommend the apple pear smoothie. Considering their prices they should do better than that. Again, one of my favourite places in Brussels to enjoy a bagel (I love them! Especially salmon&cream cheese ) and a chai latte. During the winter it is also nice to go there either alone or with a couple of friends. During the week they close quite early so I would recommend you to go either in the morning or no later than 4pm!. Before I used to go during the weekend but know they are closed so make sure you plan your visit from Monday to Friday!The staff is nice and the service is quite fast. This place is very well situated, walking distance from the European Parliament. It offers really good coffee and a varied selection of bagels. The prices are in line with everything else of the area (I.e expensive). The problem with this restaurant however is that it has ridiculous opening hours- I.e it closes every weekday at 1800, is not open on Saturdays and is Sundays is open from 1200 to 1600. Also this place seems to attract a lot families with small children making it impossible to hear yourself think and speak. If you are OK with children playing on the floor next to you and running around knocking stuff down then this is the place for you! read more

I would prefer more variety in the menu or have more flexibility to choose your own ingredients. On the one hand I really like this place as a (reasonably) new venture in the Place du Luxembourg area - which hasn't seen much change in recent years. The staff are much friendlier than some of the neighbouring bars, the place is clean and the location near the European Parliament and train station is ideal. Clearly the owners set out to make a nicer, more modern and cooler option. For that I salute them! On the other hand, they clearly know it. It ain't cheap, and with a line of people out the door at breakfast and lunchtime that's not going to change. The issue is almost nobody else in the area caters for the breakfast to go / Starbucks coffee crowd who'd be more at home in the London / Washington DC / New York morning buzz. Side note - their coffee is better than Starbucks I'm happy to confirm. Lunch bagels are good enough, with choice and the ability to switch out ingredients as they make them. There is no large kitchen so it's all a bit squeezed but I think they do a good enough job. Ordering language is primarily English over anything else given the majority of clientele. Breakfast options are where it's very poor - yes there is expensive coffee to take away. But there are more croissants than bagel options - nothing new there then. In fact if you don't want a bagel smothered in Nutella (and I mean melting out the bag) you are practically out of luck. Want eggs and a bagel? Out of luck. Something else vaguely breakfast themed? Nope. This baffles me. Maybe I'm not just enough of a bagel purist or we have different concepts of breakfast. Suffice to say this isn't the case in many other bagel places elsewhere. All that said, seating inside is nice and comfortable and well lit. Not a bad option if you are in the area and want to avoid another Exki sandwich. But it could be a 5 star place so easily....if they just did a few things better. read more

The bagels are very good and huge for the price, and I also like the fact that they're open early in the morning in case you want to get your breakfast in before work and decent tea in large mugs. At lunch time, however, it can get really crowded and hectic, and so tempers on the other side of the counter aren't always the best, as I witnessed once with a couple of gentlemen who'd evidently never been there before and had been asked what they'd wanted from one person, so naturally they followed that person, only to be told (rather rudely, I must admit) that they had to stay in line at the cash register. Hence the 3 stars. When things are busy or winding down, it's hit or miss in terms of service. It's best to come here when it's calm, unless you absolutely can't resist their excellent bagels. read more

This place has very nice coffee, although it is wickedly pricey! They have a range of milks (almond, soy, etc.), which is a nice health-conscious twist sadly lacking in most Brussels places. The food, however, doesn't quite live up to that health vibe. The bagels are all hugely overloaded, and the contents are pretty basic deli stuff: slices of meat and cheese and pre-sliced tomato. Their breakfast options are pretty much all sugar-laden, enough to make your teeth hurt. So far one of the best cafes I have been to yet in Brussels. Staff fluently speaks English, French, Spanish and Dutch. Coffees are strong and very well made. You can't go wrong with any of their homemade cakes that are reasonably priced. You can sit here for hours and no one bothers you. read more

But the bagels, sorry to say so but it was always a huge disappointment for me... Probably due to the fact they have to prepare them in the rush. This is a good and cozy cafe in the EU district which is kinda devoid of cozy places. Nice bagel dishes and cakes, and I think the coffee is pretty good too. They have a nice garden that's popular when the weather is good. I keep coming back every once in a while as I work nearby. I'd keep coming more often but the only downside is that I find it to be overpriced. Probably because of high rents and proximity to well paid European Parliament staff. The bagels are shipped in from New York which adds to the costs, I imagine. If this place were making its own bagels, then that would be really great and worth the price. I love Karsmakers, and if I could give it a 4.5/5, I would. Their espressos are top notch and the clientele is always a riot, offering perfect snapshots of life as a Eurocrat: 10€ for a bagel imported from the Bronx. The eavesdropping is unparalleled, and you're more than likely to hear English, German, or a Scandinavian language spoken -- rarely French. The staff is moody but throw them a bone and they'll come around. The terrace is also nice, I hope the Karsmakers' beagle and I can stay friends for a long time. read more

Best barrista coffee in the area. Crazy lunch service, so get there early (or late). Very friendly staff, all fluent in English, French and Dutch! The ice coffee could be improved, but there are a ton of nice smoothies and other refreshing drinks for the summer time. read more
