This is rare for me but I have to be honest. I worked with California Service Bureau ("CSB")…read moreyesterday and found them to be professional and competent. They appear to have bad clients that frequently send them accounts that have already been paid but nevertheless, they were competent and professional. I mean this is a tough business and I am not found of this industry but I found them easy to work with. On the other hand I want to remind you that if you are contacted by CSB you need not deal with them directly. First ask if the alleged debt has been legally assigned to them or are they simply representing a client because their letters say that the debt was "placed with their company for collection." This normally means the debt has not been legally assigned to them so you needn't deal with them at all. You should immediately contact the original creditor and work out was is called an accord and satisfaction whereby you offer to pay a fraction of what you owe, like 25%, in three to four installments in exchange for the creditor reporting the debt as "paid settled," or simply work out a payment arrangement. If CSB starts pestering you, and I have no evidence that they engage in this type of behavior, simply write them the following letter: This will serve as your legal notice under federal law, specifically, The Fair Debt Collection Act, to cease all telephone contact with me in reference to the above captioned alleged debt. If you call me again I will file a formal complaint against you with the Federal Trade Commission who is responsible for enforcement, the American Collectors Association and the California Attorney General. Your letter states that this matter was "placed with your company for collection." To this end you are also notified that unless you provide me with proof that this alleged debt was legally assigned to you making you I will hereinafter refuse to deal with you in any manner because until said assignment is provided you are not a real party in interest.
