I am a professional writer, and as I don't want to expose myself as needing a therapist, I'll say my name is "Jenny". The truth is, I wouldn't be a writer without Karen Cohen because quite frankly, I would be dead. Karen's diligence, ethics and strong empathetic capacity saved me from a hell one can only dream of. Her patience, tenacity and careful ability to see how far her patients can be pushed, is not only psychiatriatrically sound, but physically sound as well. I have a heart condition which she knew of and as a humanitarian first, and a clinician second, she would pump the brakes to make sure I was mentally and physically safe. I conquered my addictions with her, pulled myself up out of a suicidal state because of her, and have not only professionally soared to heights I could only dream of, I soared to heights I could only dream of in my personal relationships as well. I never dreamed I could ever restore a relationship with my mother again, but with the help of Ms. Cohen's advice, I now have a mother like I have never had before.
People may not always like what she has to say... There were a lot of things she said that I didn't like, but she always made me look at my interaction with her, which taught me how to interact with those who weren't in her office. The real work is not just in looking at what a therapist says or makes you feel, it is done when you can see yourself in those reactions, good or bad, and decide for yourself how you feel about it and make necessary adjustments within yourself.
I haven't been a patient for some time, but just ran across her name on Yelp and it made me consider a few things. I have referred more people to her practice than I can count and would never stake my reputation on the line by giving someone a referral to just anyone. Rather, I send them to Karen D. Cohen, LMFT because she is the best. read more
