I highly encourage folks to do their research before signing up for any therapy. There are a lot of…read morequacks out there and, as a prior reviewer has described, therapy can be a huge financial drain. Unfortunately, I have learned this through experience and have the following to report - we never got to see a therapist at Flourish because the office manager didn't like my "energy" and didn't want to deal with my questions. Jennifer is a recommended therapist through my EAP program and I have BCBS Anthem Insurance. I received a list of therapists to choose from for family therapy. My son made the initial contact since his name is on the EAP case number. I have been cautioned by many that EAP discounts as well as BCBS insurance are not desirable since both pay less. Therapists sign up for EAP programs, but that doesn't guarantee that you will be booked for an appointment since they can make more money taking on someone with better insurance rates. Most therapists who confirm availability through an EAP have plenty of availability either because they are starting out or because, for whatever reason, they aren't booked. First red flag: (UNPROFESSIONAL) my son called the office number and got someone who answered with "hello" rather than answering identifying the business. He was really thrown off and had to ask if he was calling an office or someone's personal number by accident. Second red flag: (MONEY MAY BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN PROVIDING CARE) he was given an appointment time a week out with Jennifer until he mentioned EAP. At that point, a new counselor was recommended. Third red flag: (UNPROFESSIONAL, DEFENSIVE, INTOLERANT - ZERO COMPASSION AND EMPATHY) since the EAP is in my name, the scheduler asked to speak with me. I got on the call and began asking questions. I explained that we had already done a lot of research on Jennifer and wanted someone competent before booking an appointment. I asked what methodology and training this new person had received. To me, this is a fair question, but at that point the office manager got on the phone and told me Jennifer was the owner of the business and had every right to assign these cases to any of her employees since it was her business and she chooses not to personally take EAP cases. She assured me that everyone was competent or Jennifer would not hire them. I re-explained that I wasn't sure this was a good fit, that I had been to my fair share of quacks in the past, and would like more information. At that point, she told me she didn't like my energy and said she found me rude. I calmly told her that she was probably right. I probably needed help, which was why I was calling a therapist. I also reminded her that my kid had called and possibly needed help dealing with me, which is why he called. She told me we weren't a good fit and ended the exchange. If you are reading this and believe the office's response was appropriate, by all means book an appointment. If you think that asking about modalities and specialization is a good method to finding a therapist, maybe you should think twice about proceeding with this "business. I believe that family therapy should be more than a business and should certainly be conducted more carefully than this conversation. If you can't navigate a simple conversation like this, what can you do?
