White Hill Farms - Pick your own strawberries

White Hill Farms

Wow, this is definitely a hidden gem, and i am not sure that i want to share it with you all…read more This is a family owned business that grows their own strawberries. Every year we go there, even though it'll take over an hour to drive to, it is well worth the strawberries. These are all pick your own and are non GMO based. They aren't sprayed with pesticides and are able to be eaten off the vine. They had some of the largest strawberries I've ever seen (outside of the genetically modified ones you may get from the stores). They have tons of rows of strawberries to pick from, and there is rarely a chance to find any rows that are completely empty. They sell them at $3/pound, which in my eyes, is great, especially for the quality of these strawberries. This year was a little different, as they were also growing cabbage, lettuce and rhubarb. *though you couldn't pick your own, it was available inside their little cozy store* They had a great selection of hanging flowers as well and we picked one up to hang outside of our house. If you like ice cream, they have locally sourced ice cream that was amazing. my kids love eating it every time. Overall, this is definitely the best place to do 'pick your own' strawberries, and definitely worth the drive.

Great local farm stand with an optional you- pick strawberry farm…read more The stand offers a great variety of fruits and veggies, plants, jars/jams and ice cream. Friendly owners and workers who always just smile at my kids covered in strawberries that they ate in the field :) Note: White Hill also participates in the Pinehurst Farmer's Market (Saturday's 10-1pm).

Great little farmer's market just outside the gates of Fort Bragg…read more It's not limited to local products. You'll find a great deal on avocados from Mexico priced at 3 for $2.50 and a regular deal on bananas at $0.59/lb. Incidentally, most bananas are not local unless you live within 20 degrees of either side of the equator. You'll also find maple syrup from New York which, as you may know, is the source of some of the finest maple syrup on the planet. RFM also sells plenty of Amish Wedding foods. AW has had some labeling issues in the past, leaving out ingredients like salt or sugar on a couple of products, but the FDA publicly shamed them in 2010 so it's possible that they've improved their ingredient labeling process. Don't hate. Just be aware. Overall, the produce is in great shape. It's fresh and there is a relatively large selection. There are meats, cheeses and eggs here as well. You can get some sugary drinks too, like Nehi, Cheerwine, Fanta, and Jarritos. They even sell Pepsi. Wide variety of products and many are reasonably priced. Anyway, it's refreshing to see a farmer's market close to a military base so that soldiers can fuel up their machines with some healthy things rather than junk food and Americanized Asian. It's not perfect, but for the location, it's one of the best markets in the area.

Tomato SZN in full effect! There's never a bad time for a stroll through the Triad Farmers Market,…read morebut the heat of summer is going to treat you to a bevy of vegetables like you would not believe. You'll find the freshest picked everything, from cucumbers to tomatoes and all points between. The market is fully covered, providing some much needed shade, and there are some permanent vendors that have an indoor facility such as an ice cream parlor, candy and fudge, general store, etc. There are full bathroom facilities on site, and even a restaurant called the Moose Cafe at the back which served southern favorites. Of course, what is offered depends on the season. You'll find a bounty of selections starting in late spring, through the summer, and into the fall. In the winter, produce starts to become more sparse, but there is no shortage of places to buy your Christmas tree if you celebrate with one of those. Best advice is to bring cash, but many vendors can take a card these days. You may get charged a little extra for using plastic in some spots though, and to help with these folks margins, cash is preferable.

We were given samples of a few different apples from the orchard while we were given instructions. We took a 5 minute hayride down to the section of apples that we would be selecting from. I'm not sure if we had come at the end or close to the end of the season but the apples that were available weren't the best. After apple picking, we took the ride back to the entrance where we shopped in the Apple Barn. The cider (non alcoholic) slushie was delicious. My favorite part of my entire time was eating the cider donuts. Made fresh and they melt in your mouth. We also visited the Cider House. They have a small selection of hard cider, other beverages, & a small selection of food. I do wish they had more options for folks that can't have dairy or don't eat pork. Overall experience was cute and the staff were friendly. If you plan on doing any of the picking from any of the orchards you can be cute but be comfy. It's a working orchard so there will be hay, dirt, bugs, etc.
