Finding this restaurant in Łódź was a pleasant surprise. They serve traditional Polish food, and I would eat everything we had again and again. ​The service was quick and easy, and the servers speak a little English. You feel as though you're sitting in an old mountain pub rather than a restaurant. It's a magnificent atmosphere in which to enjoy a Polish meal. ​They have a full bar, so you can order drinks with your dinner. They first brought out bread with smalec (a spread of rendered bacon fat) to start. Then, I had a cup of red beet soup, it was fabulous, just like Grandma would make. The main courses were cooked to perfection. I had the pork in a white sauce with mashed potatoes, the pork was very tender, and the sauce was a great accompaniment. My wife had the cheese and potato pierogies, which were mouth-watering, and my son had the schnitzel with a fried egg and mashed potatoes. ​The portions are huge, and everything was absolutely delicious. We're already looking forward to coming back the next time we're in Łódź. Very good authentic polish food. Excellent ambience. The wooden architecture and freshness of food is incomparable.

I would warmly recommend this place for people who are interested in excellent, original hearty Polish food. "Karczma u Chochola", situated quite a bit down south on Lodz's main shopping & party street "Piotrkowska", has an original, rustic, old-fashioned design, with the waitresses and waiters dressed in traditional Polish outfits. It is not at all a tourist trap though, as the costumes and decoration could make you think. In fact, the place is, in my experience, mostly attended by locals or Polish people from elsewhere. I would recommend to take one of their fantastic soups as a starter - don't shy away from the tripe soup which is truly excellent - well, in fact all the soups are just great. For the main course, you should definitely go for meat - anything is good here, I went many times. I particularly liked roulade; and I would recommend potato dumplings as a side order. Went to this restaurant on a recent trip to Lodz. About a block and a half west of the Holiday Inn on Piotrkowska St . Homey place with Polish country decor . I started by ordering A Pilsner Urquell beer which they were out of , so the waiter suggested a locally brewed Polish beer on tap, which was very good ! My traveling companion and I started by sharing a sausage assortment appetizer that was delicious. They were accompanied with great rye bread and a small pot of lard that was seasoned with bacon bits and other seasonings. Not very heart healthy , but sure did taste good ! Fresh made horseradish and mustard on the side. Main course was a hunters stew of wild boar !Wow , one word , FANTASTIC! Tender tasty meat and veggies in a wonderfully seasoned gravy with a hint of clove. They had a small selection of desserts that looked enticing, however didn't save room ! Definitely recommend, would go back in a heartbeat ! read more
