I was just thinking about my old karate training days and found this on yelp…read more If you are looking for a place to learn karate, from a real karate master, this is the place to go. When I was training there I was truly amazed at the caliber of training and people there.. But dont take my word for it look it up yourself, Shihan Miura studied kyokushin karate under founder Mas Oyama, Mas Oyama trained in many martial art styles he even trained in the dojo of Gichin Funakoshi, Shotokan Karate founder. There is real history here ,This is just a small bit of history there are literally volumes of history and it can be all checked out and verified on the internet. When I was training there Shihan Miura called his style of karate " Traditional Japanese Karate" and thats what it is. People from Japan are always visiting , and he use to have some live in students from Japan ( uchi deshi ) The Miura dojo has both young, children's classes, and older students training there. There is something there for everyone. I developed some health problems or I would still be there. Osu Ron I took this off one of Miura Dojo web pages ( http://www.miuradojo.com/?page_id=31 ) Shihan Miyuki Miura was born in 1949 in Chiba, Japan, the son of a ship's engineer. He began training in Shotokan karate at the age of 13, and had been promoted to the rank of 2nd dan black belt by his 18th birthday. He had also studied judo, achieving the rank of 1st dan at the age of 17. In 1968, upon attending college, Miura studied Kyokushin karate under karate legend Sosai Oyama (founder and director of Kyokushin karate). After graduating from Josai International University, Miura became an uchi deshi (live-in student) at the honbu dojo (headquaters) for two years becoming chief instructor. In 1971, he placed 4th in Kyokushin's All-Japan Tournament. Miura won Kyokushin's All-Japan Tournament in 1972, beating many of Japan's best competion along the way. Soon after he became champion, Sosai Oyama asked him to participate in the 100-man kumite. The 100-man kumite involves fighting 100 karate practitioners, with each full contact match following immediately after the other. Miura completed the test in a little over 3 hours on April 13, 1972. Following recovery, Mas Oyama sent Miura to the United States to run the Chicago Kyokushin dojo. Miura has since taught in the Chicago area since 1973. In 2001, he established his own independent style, World Karate Do - Miura Dojo, where he works with other full contact dojos internationally as head of the Global Budo Karate Alliance. Shihan Miura now holds the rank of 8th dan.

I can't even tell you how wonderful I felt after this class. The instructors were top notch amazing. I left this class feeling confident and refreshed. I learned some very informative information. Not only does this class teach you about self-defense. It's also a great way for your spiritual being and physical state of mind. Pat & Tobudo Aikido Team are professional and well- trained instructors. I can't wait until my next class.

I go to this school as an adult but my daughter also attended for a time. Let me tell you, this…read moreschool is awesome. As a woman I feel very comfortable at this school. The instructors are so supportive and don't treat women as fragile flowers who are just there for show. I am treated as an equal and as a "warrior." When we say warrior it's less about the idea of a physical warrior and more about being a mental warrior. We fight within ourselves to believe that we can do something and our classmates are there to make sure we know we can. This school isn't as "pretty" as others nor will you get a black belt in 12 months. However, that just goes to show that they're more concerned about the quality of their teaching. If any dojo tells you you can get a black belt in 12 months or even 2 years you should run away and run straight to Powell's Way of Kenpo. They are serious about their instruction and don't take belt testing lightly. When you get your belt, it's because you worked hard for it by learning and perfecting techniques and not because you've been there for a set amount of time. As for teaching the kids, it couldn't be better. They are patient, calm, and give the kids individual attention. They try to make everyone feel included while also instilling valuable skills such as discipline, focus, and the idea that there are no mistakes just things you need to work on. All of the kids love it there and I think they would stay there all day if they could. Definitely give Powell's Way of Kenpo a try if you or your child are considering martial arts!

I've been attending the adult classes for about a year now. I've been previously training at gyms…read morefor strength and conditioning on and off for a few years. I was looking for something more consistent that both me and my wife can join together that would be a fun activity but also be useful in our daily lives. My goal for myself was to learn proper self defense, gain flexibility, learn moves that not only look cool but were effective, and to learn some history and tradition. And I also did not want a school that would be too intimidating for my wife who gardens for a living and had never had any previous fight training. Our first impressions were we loved the bamboo garden outside and the Dojang was clean, everyone was very respectful, welcoming, and had a very diverse group of students from all skill levels. Our first week of class felt like having a personal trainer, very qualified, strong, friendly and knowledgeable. After a few months, we've already seen a huge boost in our confidence levels. And one year later, we were consistently able to attend the classes, learn so many new techniques and forms, and learned much about the art. Grand Master S.H. Yu's school has elements of many traditional styles, including Taekwondo kicks, Shotokan forms, Hapkido takedowns, boxing techniques, and martial arts stances from many different styles that also help condition and improve balance. The adult classes, however are not geared for competition, this is mostly for self defense and self improvement. We practice safety in our techniques to avoid injury and not set our goals backwards. It's geared toward longevity as a martial arts practitioner. I did notice that these classes continue to improve me and my wife's skills, has a huge benefit both mentally and physically, and is something we both always look forward to attending.

She needed not only a physical outlet for the pain and trauma, but a place where she could rebuild her spirit and regain her confidence. From the very first day, the dojhang became that healing space. I owe so much to Supreme GrandMaster Yu and Master Wilson for their unwavering support and guidance. Their commitment to fostering a positive, affirming environment has helped my daughter grow in ways I never imagined. Thanks to their training and mentorship, she's not only progressed to First Dan Black Belt but has also discovered new strength in herself--mentally, emotionally, and physically. This place is about so much more than mastering techniques; it's about developing the values of respect, resilience, perseverance, and integrity. It's been a place where my daughter has not only gained focus, improved her posture, and built confidence, but also healed and flourished. She's now thriving, both on and off the mat, and I am forever grateful for the safe, supportive community that has been such a huge part of her journey. If you're looking for a place that will nurture both your child's martial arts skills and their inner strength, this Dojhang is truly a treasure.
