The Clifton House

The Clifton House

I hadn't heard of the Clifton House until I saw it on the website for Doors Open Baltimore 2024 (if…read moreyou don't know what Doors Open is, google it!). I'm so glad that my friend and I made a point it to visit it last weekend as a part of Doors Open. What a unique and special organization. Recognize the name Lucille Clifton? She was a poet who served as the Poet Laureate of Maryland from 1979 to 1985 and a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Her husband Fred Clifton was a professor of philosophy and sculpture. The Cliftons had six children and lived in this home that is now The Clifton House for several years until the house was foreclosed on in 1980. In 2019, one of the Cliftons' daughters bought the home, and The Clifton House is now living a new life with a new purpose! The house is now a home to a nonprofit organization dedicated to continuing the legacy of poetry, art, activism, and community of the Cliftons. The organization is new and still growing and expanding. But it will eventually allow for artists in residence to reside in the home and write or create art where the Cliftons wrote and created their art. For now, it is housing and sponsoring events, workshops, classes, screenings, and more. Our visit on Doors Open included a great tour and explanation of where the Clifton House is and where it intends to go. I for one am excited to follow it and see what it offers to its community and the artistic community in our city. It's come a long way since being purchased by the Cliftons' daughter just before the pandemic, and I'm thrilled to be on their email list so I can visit again for an event again soon!

The Maryland Book Bank is a great nonprofit that focuses on providing book access to kids. It's…read moredefinitely come a LONG way from its early days in the cramped, hot space connected to the Baltimore Sun building. New space is much better. This location is much more open since it's like a warehouse with shared space for other nonprofits. The books are somewhat organized, but since they have lots of book donations, there are always bins and bins full of books that are constantly being sorted. My suggestion is to come when you have the time to sort through the book options and pick through what's useful. Some books are brand new, others with a little wear, and some are much older. It's a pretty mixed bag of books They're open about 4 days a week for specific timeframes. It's absolutely free to get a certain number of books, and kids can take as many as they can carry. You can also buy a membership, which is tax deductible, if you would like to take more than the allotted amount. They also have special events here and there for members. Overall, this is a great place to get books for classrooms, daycares, camps, etc.

Take the road that puts you as close as you can get to the interstate. It is a dim space among a huge warehouse that houses several other non-profits, so you might want to consider bringing donations when you come. The books are all free! There are only kids books, donated from the community, in pretty good used condition. Bring a bag or box. Each person is allowed 25 books, unless they purchase a yearly membership for $45. The hours are Wed 3-5 pm, and Sat 9-11 am. Amazing!!!
