I can't believe I have not reviewed Dr. Kaplan yet; she is awesome! She has been my rhuemy for two years now and she is hands-down in my top three of best doctors I've seen in my life (probably #1, but it is hard to say because she keeps me out of pain so I am super biased).
Dr. Kaplan was the last in a long line of specialists and misdiagnoses after a year of frustration and pain so bad that I was bed bound with it by the time I got in to see her. She got my diagnosis right on the first visit and has kept my pain absent to bearable for the last two years.
She is very thorough; she does a physical exam on all of my joints at every appointment, she keeps excellent notes and follows up on them at every visit, and she is very responsive if you need to message her on the Vanderbilt portal. It is a shame to say, but getting a thorough physical exam from any doctor these days is a rarity in my experience. I feel super lucky to have found her, especially when I read stories about how people are treated (or not!) by their rheumatologists.
The only drawback is the money, but the crappy American healthcare system is not Dr. Kaplan's fault. I have pretty good insurance and still pay around $400 out of pocket for each visit until I hit my deductible. If I recall correctly, my initial eval was around $800 so be prepared.
