Yes, there is only one screen, however, for me it just adds to the charm! I wish there were more independent movie theaters in small towns. This one is located next to an Italian restaurant and burrito shop and is walking distance to a couple of thrift stores, if you want to make it a browsing kind of afternoon. And what I'm loving about Kansas, there's free parking right out front!

They focus on art that reveals life and dialog. The center also has the Art Center Cinema that offers Indie films, and off the beaten path films. Anything that is shown here is not seen at a mainstream theater. The cinema is very provides Salina with an alternative to movies being shown. Often their movies are on the Golden Globe or Oscar list of movies. The center is also very focused on education and offers families and children numerous options for art classes. Highly recommend getting the extra ticket for the tram ride. They give you a wrist band and you can hop on and off. The gentleman who was our tour guide was so sweet and made the ride fun. He knows the names of all the animals. We don't have rhinos at our zoo, so I was thrilled to see two here. Stop by and say to Carlos the Camel!! Quite affordable and your ticket and other purchases help fund the zoo which is really important.

It has an amazing history about it. The art throughout it is very impressive! Lester Raymer did almost every medium of art. My favorite "thing" about the museum though was the artist working in the back room, Shin-hee Chin. Shin is an amazing artist! She uses large thread on things like blankets, to create murals. Yes, the embalmed body of the guy who built the Garden of Eden is on display in a glass-topped coffin. The entire place is bizarre and is built out of concrete. And the construction did not begin till the artist - an eccentric civil war vet with WILD political and religious ideas - was well into his 60s. The guided tour is nice and gives a good history about the place and the artist. Recommend visiting if you are in the Lucas/Wilson area. Weird. Delightfully weird.

The Garden of Eden is the incredible folk-art creation of Civil War veteran S. P. Dinsmoor, who…read morebegan building it in 1907. The property is packed with concrete sculptures depicting biblical stories, politics and Dinsmoor's very unique imagination. Definitely one-of-a-kind! It's interesting, kind of scary and neat all at the same time. He and his wife are actually in the mausoleum on site. You can view him in his coffin - he's a bit worse for ware :) The story/history is fascinating and this is worth a stop.

Lucas is a tiny town, but it's become a center of grassroots art (for example, self-taught artists and folk art/etc.). The Grassroots Art Center has a permanent exhibit for which the charge is $6.50 (it's not a real large exhibit, but there's some neat stuff) and it also has some colorful items for sale in the main room. In addition, there's a good-sized room where lectures are given. The woman working there today was very enthusiastic (also a little pushy, but we ended up really benefiting from our visit and therefore I don't begrudge her). We wanted to visit the infamous Florence Deeble House, and someone from the Grassroots Art Center needs to take people there (it's free of charge). It just so happened that a festival was held in Lucas today, and the artist who made all of the items on the walls of the house was in town. The woman at the Grassroots Arts Center had the artist take us and another couple on a tour of the house - and that house is FASCINATING! The artist (Pilar) has - during the past 11 (I think) years - made *thousands* of colorful, unusual and fascinating objects that are hanging all over each wall in the house. It's truly indescribable and she told us many interesting anecdotes. If you're within a few hours of Lucas, I highly recommend a visit (there's little else to see, with the exception of Eric Abraham's Flying Pig Studio and Gallery [see my separate review] - and admittedly Pilar isn't often available to give tours of the Deeble House - but we were enthralled). The reason why I gave five stars is because the Grassroots Art Center enables a visit to the extraordinary Florence Deeble House. HOURS: May-September: 10-5 on Monday-Saturday and 1-5 on Sunday. October-April: 10-4 on Thursday-Saturday & Monday, and 1-4 on Sunday.
