This is a comedy magic show starring and written by David Blatter and Leeman Parker, directed by…read moreJon Armstrong. It is part of the 2013 Hollywood Fringe Festival playing 6 shows until Jun 6. They are winners of the 2012 Los Angeles Comedy Festival and returning Top 10 Show of Hollywood Fringe Festival 2012. David & Leeman are 2 local magicians who have managed to come up with a ridiculously funny stage performance that syncs perfectly together. Here we have two talented young magicians who expertly produce several magic routines, but are somewhat upstaged by the fast and furious banter that goes on between them. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it makes the show that much more enjoyable and elevates the characters to a whole new level. As a Magic Castle member who has seen literally hundreds of performances, this is definitely something special and easily in my top ten. Their quick banter and the way the personalities play against each other are the highlights, providing us with something different from any other magic show. Using straight comedy magic to mystifying mentalism and supernatural routines, their humor and constant back and forth had me mesmerized at the edge of my seat wanting to see more. For an hour long show, this is something very rare and with the audience participation makes it look as if some of the show is improvised and jokes made up on the spot which they handle well. Both hilarious and brilliant, the two magicians have excellent chemistry which they play off each other perfectly, something that's rare to find. It's exciting to see so many cutting edge magicians that raise the bar and the opportunity to see them so close to home. Tickets for this are $12, but they are available on goldstar.com for only $6! It's open seating also, so you don't get cheap seats with the cheap tickets and for that price it's a steal! Hats off to Jon Armstrong as well, who's own geeky sense of humor and seasoned experience as a magician had his fingerprints printed all over the performance as the director. Masterfully done! Can't wait to see what they come up with next. In my humble opinion, I thought it was like going to a bad high school talent show…read more The actors/performers were all very average, although Cameron stood out over everyone simply because he was able to convey joke-esque material without completely needing to degrade himself. Danny was just straight up bad. Robert shows promise. My largest complaint should not be about the actors, rather that I needed to pay $7.00 to get into this train wreck. This was a very amateur group of performers making bad turns collectively. The format was based upon old school improv games, which can always be fun, but these guys just had no rhythm with the jokes or with any of the punch lines making each game excruciating to get through. Bad transitions between games. Fluidity between actors was compromised a number of times based solely on the fact that they all must have met just before they went on stage. Please, do yourself a favor and do not watch this group unless they have better actors, better games, better JOKES, and just a little-bit-a rhythm.

So when I found out they were doing a new show for this year's Hollywood Fringe Festival called "Magic and Other Dangerous Things," of course I had to go see it! And with Goldstar giving out comp tickets for their opening night, there was absolutely no reason to miss it. The show takes place in the Ruby Theatre of the Complex. There is also another theatre in the Complex, and both of them have shows before this one (which starts at 9:15PM). So if you time your arrival correctly, you could come when the previous audience is all driving away and then park in those newly vacated parking spots! We ended up coming really early because I was so paranoid about parking, though, and luckily snagged a spot on the street right by the theatre. The lobby has several chairs that you can sit in and hang out at if you happen to come early, and there are two restrooms down the hallway if you need them. The show was so much fun! David and Leeman have a lot of fun banter between themselves and they try really hard to make sure the audience is involved. Throughout their show they involve various audience members in different ways; by the end I think the majority of the audience had participated in one way or another. Because I sat really close to the front, I got to participate multiple times, which was a lot of fun. They did repeat a couple of tricks from last year's performance, but they tweaked them so they were a bit different. Other than that all the other parts of the show were completely new. However, if you watch America's Got Talent, you will recognise one trick that they do. (If you haven't, you definitely should: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfTW-ysPHCI) There was one couple there that said they came because of the AGT segment. I won't give anything else away about the show, but I will say that they did really take the "dangerous" part of the show title seriously :P Since the show was so entertaining, I didn't even realise that time was passing by and before I knew it the show was over. But after the show David and Leeman hang out in the lobby to talk and take pictures/sign autographs, so definitely say hi to them. They are such talented sweethearts! :D You can buy tickets from Hollywood Fringe's website or through Goldstar, and since they are very reasonably priced you should most definitely go see this show!

Saturday night I went to the Invisible Cities Opera presented by The Industry and LA Dance Project…read more This was a show that I will be talking about for a long time! The concept is quite unique. The performers are scattered throughout Union Station. Sometimes blended in with the everyday public. Sometimes standing out in elaborate costumes. The audience members are given Sennheiser wireless headsets to listen to a live mix of orchestra and opera singers. We were encouraged to explore Union Station while the story unfolded. Dancers appeared out of nowhere and I'm looking at the public a little bit differently. Is this person standing next to me part of the performance? Maybe, maybe not. But I had a fun time trying to figure that out. ...and in a deep way, I guess everyone was part of the performance whether they knew it or not. Describing this experience, I would relate it to two things. You know when you're watching a musical film (or the show Glee) and the actors break into song with all the background actors engaging in a choreographed dance? Often times you think "Yeah, that never happens in real life!" Well, for me it did. I can also relate this experience to witnessing a flash mob that I knew was going to take place. Invisible Cities only has a few more show dates left which are sold out. But if they add more dates, I would recommend for everyone to jump at the chance at buying tickets because this is an experience you will never forget!

Yes, I say! The last time I went to the Opera I had a 3 show subscription with Los Angeles Opera company 5 years ago. At the time Woody Allen, and David Cronenberg had created operas for the 2008 summer season. Allen's production received rave reviews. Sadly I opted for the David Cronenberg directed production of The Fly instead. Little did I know how UNfabulous the production could be, involving continuous dry humping nude love scenes, and the worst lyrics I have ever heard in my life. "And his arms and his limbs started to fall off......" My humiliation FOR the cast was all encompassing. Even when I later saw Carmen, which was staged beautifully with gorgeous costumes I wasn't very excited about it. I haven't given up on classical Opera, I just didn't enjoy my last experience so much. About 4 weeks ago: I am riding my daily commute via L.A. Metro bus and "transit tv" features a profile on The Industry's latest production Invisible Cities which combines opera and dance in coordination with LA Dance Project performed throughout Union Station with the audience utilizing wireless headphones. Almost immediately I am sold. I was fortunate and entirely grateful to be able to attend a free performance last Sunday after I took too long to buy tickets and the 3 week run quickly sold out. In director, Yuval Sharon's introduction to the performance he informs us that there is "no right way to view this performance." He asks us to allow everyone who is using the space to let it meet their needs, whether it is transit, or warmth and shelter. He also encourages us to share our headphones with passerbys and those who were not able to procure some for that very performance. He asks us to journey together and just experience Invisible Cities, without concern of missing something somewhere else in the station and that essentially this is by design a unique and fleeting experience. I find this divine. For me the performance was a joy. The joy of a beautiful public space becoming even more alive with music and dance to many's surprise as people passed through the station. The faces of my fellow audience members with intent as a dancer's kinetic energy was all of a sudden beside them and or all around them. The excitement of being in the middle of a scene as a singer is emoting and singing while staring into my eyes walking toward me. Me on the verge of tears. I am endlessly in love with Invisible Cities. I have a renewed interest in classical music and opera in particular thanks to the creative infusion of The Industry. Thank you kindly, I am feeling inspired for years to come. XXO
