    The Kaimuki Public Library.
    Fran C.

As a kid growing up in Kaimuki, I spent a lot of time in this library as my parents wanted to instill the value of education to me, and reading was a big part of what my parents wanted me to do. What did I actually do? Like a clown, I just mostly horsed around in the library with my friends! Edjumacation was the last thing on my mind as a kid, and P.E. - physical education was my bag baby! Too bad god didn't give me all the gifts to be a professional athlete, so at the end of the day, I realized that my parents were right about expanding my learning, and getting a good education. After spending my early years at the Kaimuki library, in my later years in school I found myself using the libraries at the University of Hawaii - (Hamilton Library, & Sinclair Library). A lot has changed over the years since I last been to the Kaimuki Public Library. Looks like the Kaimuki Public Library kept up with the maintenance of the place, as the library looked very clean, and neat. What I wasn't surprised of seeing is the computers they had there for public use, because when I was a kid, we were still living in the stone ages as there were no computers. Lol! Also, I saw DVD's you could rent out, and of course stations within the library where you could hook up your own laptop to use within the library. I know I had signed up for a library card as a kid. I remembered my library card to be green colored, & I bought some kinda cheap plastic thingy to laminate my green paper library card. I don't know what happened to my library card, as that library card is long gone, but since I was already at the library looking around, I decided to see if there were any records of me having a library card. When the helpful library clerk looked on the computer system, it showed I did not have a card, so I promptly signed up for a new library card. (Yay for me!). I don't plan on using the library on a regular basis, as now-a-dayz one can get information instantaneous via their phone, or computer at any given time/place. But still, having a library card is good as I was thinking that one day when I do retire (and have a lot of time to kill), I'd swing by the library to read a book, magazine, or newspaper. :D

I made the transition to Kindle books some time ago, and made great use of the Hawaii State Public Library System's Kindle collection for some time now. In the course of doing some family research, I had to borrow some books on Hawaiian history that weren't available on Kindle. That meant a physical visit to the library. Kaimuki Public Library is a nearby local library, easy to get to with lots of parking. I've been going there for over 30 years since I went to college at UH Manoa. The layout hasn't changed in that time- children & young adult on the right when you first walk in, adult on the left. It felt like walking through a time warp. But there are signs of change: Wifi is available, also there are public terminals to access the internet. I soon found the books I was looking for, but one was reference only. It wasn't available to check out. So I found an open carousel and read until the library closed in several hours. It's basic, but it met my needs for the day. Will repeat when needed and recommend!

This library is extremely quiet. It is old looking, but I like the take or give a seed exchange they had. They also have ample seating, and it is clean.

This is medium sized library with a parking lot. Quite busy with young and old patrons. The public computers seem to constantly filled with users. They have a clean vintage small-tiled restroom. The library is appropriately quiet, so one can hear the toilet flushes! Overall, a tidy and busy library. The right half is filled with children/young adult literature and the left with more adult items. There are also magazines, tapes, CD's and other materials to borrow.

The DIY apparatus - and the detailed instructions! It works....

OPEN. - modified but open. You can browse live the various new fiction or non-fiction. It is clear they want you to browse and borrow and not linger. The checkout was very interesting -- they took a laundry container and attached a yardstick underneath so they could pull it back from a table. The table is where you place your books to be borrowed and your library card. The check out person then pulls back the laundry bin with the yardstick and processes your books. All is slided back to you when finished. Definitely a DIY solution. No automation - but it works! Nice to get to borrow books again since I love to read 1-2 hours a day. Not quite normal but I am happy for the compromise.

We came here yesterday to borrow some books. Our home library is Hawaii Kai public library but we didn't think that we would make it in time. Hawaii Kai library was gonna close at 5 and Kaimuki library opened until 6. Growing up in the area, my mom always used to take us to the Kaimuki library. My mom would always have us join their summer reading program. Even as an adult I would go to that library. It's a good library and they have a lot of resources. Well it's been years since I last came to Kaimuki library and they made a few changes. I only went to the children's side so I'm not sure if they made changes on the adult side. Anyway, the children side looks so much better. It's such a welcoming environment for the kids now. They have comfy seats for the kids to sit in and they have a large play area with seating around for the parents. In the play area they have a huge rug and shelves full of toys for kids to play with. There's puzzles, foam letters, stuffed animals, all kinds of things. As soon as my daughter saw that section she just ran over there and wanted to start playing. And when it came time to leave she didn't want to go. I'd bring my daughter back to this library again. They did a good job catering to children's needs and making it more kid friendly.

My new favorite study spot! Pros: -Easy and ample parking space -WiFi (log in with library card and pin) -Big tables, small tables, tables w/ dividers are available for studying or getting sh!t done -Bathrooms -A/C -Great lighting for studying/reading -Friendly staff Cons: -Closed on Saturdays and reduced hours on Fridays (1-5pm) -No eating/drinking inside the library (which I understand) Overall, my favorite library of the Hawaii state public libraries. People are generally considerate enough to keep their voices down and the library is very clean. For those of you looking for someplace to study at and not have to spend money just to use their space (like at cafes), definitely check this place out or another public library that's closer to you. 2018 Yelp review #39

Had to come to this library since the Aina Haina one got flooded in April

The Kaimuki Library is the BEST! I live in Aina Haina so I usually went to that library but because of the April Floods the library has neen closed for repairs! What a blessing that happened so I came here. Oh my goodness! They have so many free activities & workshops! Today, May Kealoha presented Plants for our healing! She was so enthusiastic & personable! Such good information & good energy! She showed us books & posters moreover she had samples of food & plants! I really liked thay she mentioned that we may not spend the $ to try new things so she brought us all these healthy foods & tea to sample. Such as: Spinach & whole wheat tortillas, green salad with lots of tomatoes & carrots, fruit tray filled with strawberries, cantaloupe, pineapple, red & green grapes, dried apricots, nuts, chocolate truffles, seaweed salad, salsa with chips, honey & different jams & marmalade! Her New Hope church friends made kabocha, kalo & a delucious chicken soup with green papaya! May even had different teas: noni & mamaki! Also, she had so many plants to share which i love to garden & didnt know all these native plants have healing power! I am just amazed of her generosity! God Bless May & her friends! Also want to Thank Randy & Kaimuki Library for a wondeful event!!

One of the few open on Sundays! Good parking, neat counter with colorful slang (pic for pleasure) and friendly staff. I really like the high ceiling and large artsy murals. It's fairly easy to access from Waikiki.

All the best libraries have seed swaps.

The Greco-Roman State Library building was funded by a $100,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie. The building was designed by Mrs. Carnegie's brother, Henry Whitfield. The building has copper doors and a green tiled roof. The 20,000 square foot building opened in 1913 and housed historical Hawaiian collections in addition to other literature. The building was expanded in 1927 with design by Charles Dicky to add space and enclose the courtyard. The central courtyard with gardens in the building provides a beautiful area to read and enjoy the tropical weather. Several pieces of Hawaiian art hang in the foyer and on other library walls. The collection is divided into Children's, Young Adult and Adult sections. I found books unique to Hawaiian culture. Some stack areas are closed off for some reason and require assistance to access. The staff is aloha friendly and eager to assist. They eagerly provided me with information about the library. A unique feature of the library is the presence of a US Passport office. Visitors can apply for and renew passports here. While functional, the library could use some restoration and refresh. The building was named to the National Register in 1982. There is limited metered street parking in front of the building. I did not see a dedicated lot, but there may be one.
