Sadly, the quality of the 'dark brew' ain't what it could be (read: extremely bitter espresso drinks) and that's a shame given how centrally located and charmingly laid out this place is. I'm a sucker for coffee sack-lined walls, funky old light fixtures and solid wood 'steh cafe' tables. To complete a place, however, one needs great product. That's where, at least java-wise, this place falls short of the mark. Props to the young gal who served us. She was so very nice. I'd like to pay for her to go to barista training school. Having said that, it could be a case of not having the best machines to work with, or, at the very least, not having them in the best working order.

When one visits the Black Forest, one must eat Black Forest Cake, right? I was on a day tour to…read moreFreiburg and we had a short amount of time on our own, so I used that time to search for the "best black forest cake" according to Google. I didn't even have time to sit and eat (though it looked like a cozy German cafe), but I ordered the cake to go and brought it back to my hotel room for a post 17,000-step day treat...and it was worth it! A tasty treat (especially the chantilly cream), but I don't know if I can quite say it's the best. Service was a little slow (particularly frustrating when I'd been waiting a few minutes with no acknowledgement and then a couple that came in after me were served first), but I know that's the nature of customer service sometimes.

Nothing was overly sweet either nor did anything feel heavy surprisingly. We met up with a friend who is born and raised in Freiburg and resides there as well-she says this is one of the best cafes/bakeries!

The salmon is super fresh, and comes with horseradish and capers. The bread basket comes with bread + croissant per person. It also comes with fresh butter, marmalade, and honey. The bread was nice and had crunchy exterior and soft interior, and there was a couple of varieties of bread. The combo breakfast also comes with a hard boiled egg (still shelled) and a soft boiled egg. I was super happy with my breakfast, and the service was really quick. Food = awesome Service = quick Overall I'd come here again!

I could have bought a gazillion more teas but I ended up with rooibos raspberry and an amazing rooibos winter chocolate, a cute cat teastrainer (because you can't have too many of those, right? When I tasted the teas at home I really wish I had bought more of them because the flavours are amazing (which isn't a sure thing even if the dry tea smells great), but they have a webshop so I do hope they ship to Sweden.

I was there at 8.30ish and compared to cafes in Stockholm (or other large Swedish cities) it was quite empty. Giving the impression that Germans seem less keen on having breakfasts out. The different breakfasts I chose were really lovely in their own way. No1 was coffee of choice, freshly squeezed orange juice and breadroll with hummus and marinated artichokes. Lots of flavours and very very filling so lunch wasn't really an option that day. The no2 breakfast on the menu was coffee of choice, fresh juice and fruit muesli with non-dairy milk products of choice. Nice and breakfasty as expected. Unfortunately the coffee was the only negative both days, most cafes that use soy milk in Germany do it very well, Huber doesn't quite master the art and the soy cappuccino resp latte had an unfortunate soy tang. (Different baristas.) I would have loved to try their lunch options too, but time didn't permit. Also beware that the kitchen is open in the middle of the cafe and the ventilation isn't very effective. Your clothes and hair will most likely smell of fried onion and cabbage when you leave the place after breakfast. Friendly staff. Cash only.
