    Black Cat - Lentil burger

Fantastic place with comfortable wooden seating benches, pillows along the windows seating,…read moreeclectic posters and decor and buzzy but not overtly loud or obnoxious convo happening. Although £12 for my lentil burger made me blanche, the generous sides of salad and housemade slaw (I asked for no fries nor burger bun) made it all worth it. There's so much on the plate I boxed half for home (I had drank a smoothie before I had arrived here). The slaw in particular is divine: it doesn't have that gross mayo gloppiness I usually despise. It's quite fresh. There's a lovely vinaigrette on the greens and the burger has a moreish artichoke sauce. The staff is friendly as are the customers; dog-friendly too!

I totally go out of my way for a good vegan cafe or restaurant - especially when it is called…read more"Black Cat" (I live with several black cats, so feel a kinship). My friend and I popped in for brunch on a Saturday and staff were very helpful and flexible with our orders. I got the big vegan breakfast (sans beans) and my friend got a gluten-free version that subbed a bunch of salads. Both of our meals were HUGE -- I ended up bringing home enough for breakfast the next morning! The restaurant also has a divine assortment of vegan cakes, cupcakes and desserts with MANY gluten-free options so of course we bought up about 4 items to bring for later. They also sell some packaged grocery items and have a lovely lefty/anarcho/vegan book selection. The t-shirts are 15 GBP and well worth grabbing one as a souvenir since you know the leftovers won't last the whole way home! Cafe is super cute inside with many small tables and lots of art (I especially adore the big cat mural in the bathroom). Keep in mind - they are closed on Tuesdays. :( Totally worth going out of your way -- it's not too bad of a walk from Hackney Central or Hackney Downs (check out Pemberton Pub on your way back if you have the time!).

OH TINA! You have saved me…read more I am in the midst of moving house. This involves: no WiFi at home, and massive amounts of trawling up and down and around Dalston to source wonderful items of household joy such as toilet brushes, bins and doormats. Rest assured, i am generally not having fun. However, prompted by the same sign that Mei L. saw, I popped by for a coffee and a quick snark of their internets. I've been here for 2 hours, had three (very, very good) lattes and watched their current exhibiting artist painting his mural on the stark white interior of the cafe. It's looking good to say the least, and the outlook for the afternoon is considerably improved. The people running this little oasis are super friendly, and seem to have endless conversation, which is good in an area when anything vaguely stylish seems to be overrun by those with their finger so on the pulse that maybe their own hearts have stopped beating. Tina is peeking around the corner with a cheeky look on her face, as some Rai oozes out of the stereo. I'm eyeing up their serrano ham sandwich and most certainly will have one of their brownies. Oh, they've changed their tunes to Joni Mitchell now. Hmph. I would also play some scrabble with someone, but i'm sat next to a 5 year old with a serious addiction to hot chocolate. It might get messy. Mei - when you're next about I challenge you to a connect 4 duel! The only drawback to this ace place is that coming with laptop means that you're restricted to sitting inside, and it sure is sweaty in here... which has sadly stripped one star off my review. I still salute you though Tina.

You can't really go wrong with banana bread and peanut butter and fancy looking lattes…read more This cute cafe reminded me of LA hipster cafes that are there purely for Instagram, but that's okay! They're known for their vegan banana bread and had the option of topping it with peanut butter or a greek yogurt topping. I loved that the bread was toasted, and it was so comforting and sweet to eat with a spoon. The peanut butter isn't the disgusting Skippy consistency, but more like natural, dripping peanut butter that has a stronger flavor. It was a nice bite. I got the blue majik latte and thought it just tasted like a sweet latte that looked pretty. Kind of pricey too.

So updated review after eating brunch here today (4 Feb) with a friend:…read more Yes the pink background and palm frond wallpaper (and palm from baskets hanging from the ceiling) is still cute as ever and the desserts were again lovely. The waitress was also very cheerful this Sunday AM. The food menu is slightly changed from when I swung by six months ago. I got the Palm Buddha Bowel, which has an incredibly tasty blend of tabbouleh, roasted veggies, beetroot hummus, baba ganoush, massaged kale with seeds, pickled candy radishes (absolutely delicious) and thick sweet potato falafels bursting with flavour (the waitress kindly had the cucumber removed from the dish as I requested). It's a hefty bowl and I finished it feeling satisfied; I ended up being full the whole afternoon! I also got the Green Goddess juice (sans cucumber) and I liked how large and frothy it was. Sadly my friend didn't seem to like her Persian porridge and admittingly it looked pretty gluey and unpleasant. I got one of the vegan cookies and a coconut, chocolate and passion fruit macaroon for takeaway. The cookie was both sweet and salty but a bit too sugary for my taste. It was thin and lightly crispy with a decent amount of chocolate chunks. The macaron was very light and crumbly with a smattering of that coco/chocolate/passion fruit ingredient inside.
