I have been searching for authentic Greek food around Vaud for awhile now, and so happy to finally have found something! And not just something that is OK, this is the best Gyro I have had outside of Greece. I was even more excited to see that next door, owned by the same people, is a fancier sit down Greek restaurant serving some main Greek dishes. I have quickly bookmarked that to try next. Souvlaki Fan is a simple self service cafe, and they also deliver. You enter and you order your food, sit down and it is brought to you, and then you clean up your own space. They have pork, fish, veggie, chicken, or lamb Souvlaki. Most of the meat options come in traditional, fondue, or spicy style. They also have larger dinner plate options, salads, pasta, or crepes. Definitely something for everyone. I ordered the lamb Souvlaki and was EXTREMELY excited to see it is served the authentic Greek way with the fries inside the pita. Well done. I was also excited to see they have Nescafe Frappe on the menu, and it was perfect. While I was eating I closed my eyes and with the Greek music playing, and the owners speaking in Greek, I could slightly imagine myself back in Greece. The service was very friendly, they even gave a bit of meat to my puppy that was with me. I was even able to practise my rusty Greek with them!!! Tip: They have a fidelity card on the back of their menu's, after your 10th Souvlaki you get the 11th one free.

It's tucked into a side street very close to Plainpalais (perfect for a stop-in when you're at the Saturday flea market, for example). There are also outdoor tables, depending on your temperature preferences. You order at the counter, and fewer than 5 minutes later, a nice steaming souvlaki is delivered into your hands. They have a few types of wine, raki, Greek beer and soft drinks/juice, if you're eating in. The souvlakis are generous - my favorite is the Spicy Chicken - and the Greek salad is fabulous as well. What I really like are the staff, though. This is a family-owned establishment, I think, and I've met everyone from big brother to little brother to classic Greek mama. My pup actually leads me to the restaurant on evening walks. Try it, and you will be hooked! (I have brought friends and family, and everyone has been quite happy.) One friend has used the takeout service, but I can't comment personally.

We ordered the mixed platter, one kibbie, and a small tabouli salad. The Kibbie was so good that we finished before we were able to take a picture...sorry. The Mixed Platter was great. It had chicken, lamb, kofta with a bit of labne, hummus, and a salad of lettuce, tomato and onion. The tabouli was beautiful and it also eaten almost completely before we got a picture. All of the food was some of the best Lebanese food we have had. Service was great. The atmosphere was hopping with lots of locals enjoying their Sunday lunch. No reservations taken. The place is large so if there is a wait it won't take long. Highly recommend.

9I don't need to pair this review in compare-contrast or "two peas in a pod" mode. I knew Torino…read more(Turin) would have Greek food to be found. Most major Italian cities don't have much of this cuisine, but there will be some restaurants that do. Note that this also shows up as Olympia Taverna Greca and you could also locate it that way. However, being on Via Lavagna 7, this is definitely the one. I've been to Olympia Taverna Greca twice ... once in winter and recently in summer. The first time I went alone because I wanted to validate the discovery and, more recently, I persuaded some Torinese friends to come along. First, this restaurant has a pleasing interior. There are also covered seating options adjacent to the sidewalk on both sides of the corner entry. The interior is simple, well lit, and, as can be expected, decked out in the colors of the Greek flag, complete with the name Olympia in block letters on the back wall over a Greek pediment. Taverna Greca's menu is varied. All of the Greek things you are likely to think of will be on the menu. The first time I went, I actually ordered the vegetarian platter and it was excellent. It was sort of sampler of Greek appetizers amounting to a meal. Recently, the platters ordered were of sausage, beef souvlaki, and chicken souvlaki. My chicken souvlaki platter was both generous and appropriately priced, and came with potatoes and salad. The potatoes were cubed, so far better than French fries - I've actually seen the latter in Greece and avoided them - but oven baked lemon potatoes would have been even better. For hospitality and some favors, I ordered the appetizer - saganaki - and the dessert - chocolate baklava - to be shared. The saganaki was presented in sticks. It was good but I had asked if it would be lit. I guess there was a misunderstanding. It wasn't lit. Maybe they don't do that here, or in Italian cities. Maybe it's a gimmick North Americans have come to like for its kitsch novelty. However, a block of saganaki cheese that has been set ablaze is nothing to argue with. Their chocolate baklava is outstanding. The dessert is small, but has a smaller price, too, and comes in separate pieces, so it had to be broken up to be shared. The service is pleasant and informal. The servers could definitely be humorous. It was as such on both visits. The proprietor is a woman hailing from Greece who is very cordial. She directed us to the bar upon exiting to get shots of a Greek liqueur. I don't know much about these things since I default to Coke and Sprite, and whether or not it was ouzo, but, since it was offered, I accepted. Taverna Greca Olympia is on Torino's more business-like south end, and very close to the Lingotto Metro station. It is close to the automotive museum and a trendier small shopping center in a repurposed building as well. This all sounds like 4 solid stars. But I'm going to go with 5 stars for Taverna Greca. The first visit was during winter and, even at the top end of Italy, the only things usually offered is wine, other alcohol, soft drinks, or water. But, then, at the end of a meal, folks counterbalance that with their kerosene-like coffee. In wanting something hot on a colder day throughout the meal, they brought me out tea service with no fuss, from which I was able to pour a few cups. Most Southern European restaurants are not equipped to do so. Then, at the end of the recent meal, the other two people who were going there for the first time were remarking how much they liked their meals while walking back to the Metro. I'm glad I suggested this locale for dinner. Also, in my mind, Via Lavagna is comical. It rhymes with lasagna, but that's not the reason. In English, a lavagna would be a chalkboard or similar. A childhood friend who went to a public high school had a friend with a differently spelled but identical sounding rendition of Lavagna. I told him he was going to school with a girl whose name meant "chalkboard." This was yet another inside joke added to our list. So, while this doesn't solidify the already given 5 stars, it definitely makes for a chuckle upon walking up to and leaving Olympia Taverna Greca.

Upon entering you can either order to take away, or sit down in a small area on the first floor, or upstairs. This place has the typical Kebab specialities, salads, and also a variety of pizza. It was fun to watch them make the pizza as they spin the dough up and toss it up in the air and all around, before putting the toppings on and popping it in the oven. They also offer free wifi, and delivery if you live in the Nyon area. Another bonus is that this place is open all hours of the week: Monday - Saturday 7:30am - 11:00pm, and Sunday from 12 - 10:00pm. We decided to take a seat and order. The service was friendly and fast. I ordered a Greek salad, and my husband got the Chicken Brochette. I was surprised by delicious my salad looked, I never expect much from these Kebab shops. The salad was fresh and delicious. I had a few bites of my husbands chicken plate and it was very yummy. Also liked that the chicken was made from what appeared to be quality white chicken meat. They also offer a variety of spirits, wine, beers, and soft drinks on the menu. We had a coffee following our meal and were happy to find it wasn't just a nestle espresso capsule. I will definitely be going back here to check out their other options. I was pleasantly surprised by this place, and definitely need to check out one of their pizzas as many people were taking these to go. The kebab pizza looked very interesting.
