It's tucked behind an otherwise unremarkable doorway between an Oxxo and a pizza bistro on the worn, narrow Carranza street, across from the Culinary Institute. It's worth trying to persist and find the door that leads up some stairs into the main dining room (there are two other adjoining rooms in this house that has been re-furbished as a restaurant). The rooms are painted in rich Mexican color and decorated with the skulls, religious figurine altars, and iconography typical of traditional, colonial Mexican culture. The Mezcal cocktails include one mixing both Horchata and Mezcal, but also others that blend fruits/cucumber infusions with Mezcal (there are about nine different ones to chose from). The House prepares its own Mezcals which you can take as shots or used in cocktails. The menu offers some interesting pizzas and open-faced sandwiches. I enjoyed the pleasant service, and the cool music. The dining rooms are nice but their terrace is open up above on weekends, when I hear, they have DJs that spin.

They have some semi-see-through sun screens/shields that cover half the bar for patrons who do not want the sun in their eyes; the staff raise these screens just before sunset. I actually want to give 4.5 stars because the calamari we had was laughably bad and the salad it came with was much better. The cocktail menu is not large, but the drinks are inventive and much more balanced (less syrupy sweet, nor shy on the liquor) compared to other places. Prices are a bit higher than most at 180 pesos per drink, but still very reasonable compared to US prices. The only thing that was a little strange was that their menu QR code took us to their Instagram page. Me being a total dinosaur did not have an IG account and couldn't see the menu, but luckily hubby did. There is a host's stand at the Hotel Casa del Rector entrance to make sure that there is seating to accommodate your party before allowing you to go up. Our hostess did not tell us how to actually get to the rooftop, so we just walked up a couple flights and found ourselves in a completely empty but very pretty courtyard. We found more stairs up across the courtyard, even though it looked like it led to hotel guest rooms and private balconies, then eventually ended up at the top where the pool and bar were. Totally took my breath away at the complete transformation from the busy cobblestone street to panoramic views of the city. Only then did I see the glass elevator that would've taken us easily up here. However, the free self-guided tour of the hotel convinced me the next time I'm in Guanajuato, this is the place to stay in!

We both ordered a steak, as we were in beef country. When the food arrived in a styrofoam container with the cheapest possible cutlery I began to get worried. Then we opened up the boxes and indeed my fears had come true. The food was poorly prepared and just thrown into a box and full of oil. I ordered my steak medium rare, which ended up cold and bloody inside. My wife who only eats steak well done got hers cooked rare. We contacted the restaurant and asked them for a refund as the meal was nothing like we expected or asked for given the price we paid. The restaurant was unwilling to give anything and we were told to have a good night. I can't say what the service is like for those dining in the restaurant, but if our takeout experience was any reflection, it can't be good. This is one place we will not be going again nor recommending to any friends.
