K2 the Church used to be held in three buildings in South Salt Lake. There was a tan and red building for the "adult" service; the tan building was also used for Adventure Canyon (the kids' service) and Edge (5th-6th graders). The third building was kind of like a garage for teenagers; Vertical was for middle school students and Fusion was for high school students. In 2015, K2 the Church moved to Murray to share a building with the International school called AISU. The new building is huge with many sections and rooms. The interior looks kind of like a small town.
I've been going to this church since I was in 4th grade, so I have been at this church for about 9-10 years. I went through all of Adventure Canyon, Edge, Vertical, and Fusion. I have participated as an LIT (Leaders In Training) since the second year the program opened up and now help with nursery, and attend the adult service. So, I basically grew up in this church.
Let's start with Adventure Canyon; I actually really enjoyed Adventure Canyon as a child. We had crafts, fun songs, snacks, and understandable, simple lessons about God. When I became an LIT, I started helping out with all of these things. It was really great to work with all the children and I got to experience teaching kids from 1st through 6th grade. I would say this church does a pretty great job with keeping the kids interested, having a structured lesson plan, and having a well-organized team of teachers and assistants.
Vertical was much smaller than Adventure Canyon. Middle School is always a time of insecurities and low attention span, but the teachers were always good at keeping the lessons relevant and still have teens listen. One of my favorite teachers was Carrie. Vertical had great snacks every Sunday and fun weekly hang outs for everyone. I didn't have much time to attend these hang outs, so people started forming friendships, and sadly it was hard for me to be friends with everyone.
Fusion was even smaller and ended up infusing with Vertical until we broke off into smaller groups based on grade. Fusion had more serious content about Christianity. It really explored the depths and questions about it. There was lots of exploring to help answer deep and simple questions. John, the teacher, really helped incorporate his experiences into his answers.
This church gave me lots of opportunities. I had lots of leadership experience because of LIT. I was able to help with the nursery by the age of 18. So, it really expanded my knowledge on children. I was also able to set up a donation box for Swaziland for a senior service project for a couple weeks. There were many service projects available to me throughout the years. Also, a Korean church my family was affiliated with was able to rent out a room to expand on their own endeavors. K2 is open to anything and that is one of the greatest qualities about them. They are always willing to improve.
There aren't many flaws about this place, but the one flaw I was able to find was that it's hard to make personal connections with people, especially because the church is so big. There are many groups, like Women's Group, to join, but other than that it's hard. I've been here for about 10 years and I haven't gotten close to anyone at the church. This may be because I didn't have time to join those small groups during the weekday, but since I wasn't able to attend those, it was hard to be friends with people on Sunday. They do say it's all inclusive, but I'm not so sure about that; however, it is as inclusive as it could ever be. Some people occasionally come up to say hi :)
Overall, this church, I believe, is one of the best. It's modern, very pro-active in the community, and highly organized. The people are friendly, there is always food and drinks, and fun little shenanigans for special occasions, like free hot dogs during the summer. The service is never boring- especially the music, it's not anything like quiet hymns, if anything you should bring ear plugs if you're used to that- and Dave does a good job teaching the right message; I mean, my family has listened to his sermons for 10 years now. I really do applaud this place because we have jumped from church to church every couple years, but we have stuck with this church. It just goes to show that this place has a little something for everyone. read more
