Simple as that…read more I was in a hurry to get my business cards ready for a cocktail reception on Wednesday night, and only until Tuesday morning I received the softcopy of my business card layout. Not the most ideal situation, as the "business card" culture in Hong Kong is still boringly but undeniably strong, just like Japan or other Asian countries. Everyone can undoubtedly find each other online within a few clicks of Google/LinkedIn search, but if you don't have a business card, you won't be treated seriously. Oh well, the lucky thing is, Hong Kong is most famous for its efficiency (or second most famous, just behind the food here). A lot of other print shops only had retail outlets on the Kowloon side, so e-print was my best bet. I called Tuesday morning as soon as they opened at 9:30. Unlike your average credit card / telecom CS, e-print had a real human being picked up my call right away. After reassuring the business cards can be printed within 24 hours (that's not an urgent request, by the way. It was the standard time of delivery), I registered an account online, chose the type of paper I preferred, uploaded my design, and everything was seamlessly done within 15mins. I called again, to make sure everything looked fine. Someone picked up the call and had my order on her screen already. We talked through some details, and I paid for the cards online while having her on the other end of the line. Both credit cards and PPS options are available, and it took me just another 5mins. Note that the "ready by 24hrs" only starts counting when you have paid. You could see the progress online too, from "received your order" to "ready to pick up", you wouldn't miss a thing. I checked again Wednesday morning, and it was ready (thanks god!). The retail outlet was nothing less than efficient, too. All I needed was to present my phone number, and the cards were in my hands. And when I was just about to leave, the staff noted that I was a first time user, so she reminded me of an offer to have free business cards printed from their mobile app(!). The offer would expire by the end of Oct, so it was really nice for her to remind me of it. There are a lot of other stuff you can print at e-print, and its sister shop e-banner. I'm sure I will come back very often in the future.

It is not worth it!!!! Before you order, consider how much it will cost you if the order is not delivered. I've used them many times... in fact this latest non-delivery hasn't been the only one; just the straw that broke the camel's back. And it is not like there are not competitors like printshop.hk (so far so good). I guess e-print is just better marketed. --------------- 1) If they have questions, they don't leave messages... they just will not print. So stand by your phone in case you miss it. Otherwise you won't know until it is too late that you don't have what you need. 2) They had the audacity to suggest paying a few hundred dollars more to make up some lost time, (rush so they will not be AS LATE), which would also require me to pick it up at a distant location in Kwun Tong. 3) Getting a refund for a non-delivery / cancellation is not easy, they will require you to fill, stamp with chop, and scan back a claims form so make sure you have your order # and customer # so they can send you a refund cheque in 10 business days (or so they claim). The person cancelling your order won't help you with the refund process either.

If there is empty white space on a page, "chop" it! However, I have found getting these chops a bit tricky - maybe it's just me? For ages, it seemed to me to only be the back alley dudes in the wooden shacks that do them, like the chop trade was something much more illicit. However, I am completely wrong, as I have now found a number of print shops that do them - hurrah! Special mention must be made of Print Shop. They kinda do exactly what the shop name suggests; they print stuff, like business cards, post cards, invitation, photocopying, you get the idea. They also make chops, offering a variety of different sizes and ink colours. What is good about their chop making service, other than the chops coming our really well, is that they can make them from a jpeg file. A lot of the other print shops can print from jpegs (despite really only wanting AI files), but most can only make chops from AI (Adobe Illustrator) files. Many of us don't have access to these pro softwares, so being able to give them a consumer format was very useful. The shop has recently moved to a bigger premises (unfortunately they moved all their junk with them too, so it is a bit like a self storage locker in the shop), which is not as convenient as their old location under Wan Chai MTR bridge, but still close enough. They do have an extensive website, but it is only in Chinese - boooo.

I'm guessing this place is more of a print shop for businesses such as fliers, promotional materials, business cards, etc. it looks like they would do a good job. I wouldn't know though. They have a number of convenient locations including Sheung Wan and Wan Chai, as well as an online service, but some ordering processes are only in Chinese. The best thing about E-Print is its simplicity. Yes, you can get business cards printed on textured cream paper using specialist inks - remember that scene out of American Psycho? However, unless you are CK Leung, who cares what the paper texture on your card is like, so long as it has your name and details! The best E-Print service is their standard business card service. For HKD55 you can get 300 matt cards, or for HKD70 the same quantity but laminated so they are slightly waxy. I go crazy and spend a whopping HKD90 for 300 UV spot laminated cards, which have my company logo artwork glossy and raised - fancy! Check out their website for the prices, they are very very good, but do be mindful of where the price breaks come (and check the costs which are not per box but per order). You may for example be better off buying 5 boxes or 10 boxes, but nothing in between, as the cost of 6 boxes is the same as 10 boxes. Turn around times are fast at 1 or 2 working days, depending on whether or not you take the UV spot. More complex designs with die cutting or folding etc. cost more and take longer. As mentioned they do loads of other printing services, so do check them out. I have ordered many times from them and always found their work exemplary.

How e-print works, is that they are online, and you can download a program and submit everything online. Once you have submitted everything you need printed, someone from e-print will give you a call to confirm your order, you pay, then the stuff you need will be ready in just a few days. I think their printing facilities might be in china - not sure exactly, their call centres are definitely in china though, which is why they can support such low cost printing. I have had a few problems with the people i dealt with in the past, basically you have to yell at them to get the stuff done.. frustrating, i know.. but has to be done. After everything is confirmed, you can pick up in just a few days. It makes life so much easier, being in hk, everything needs to be done asap, and this is the exact service they provide - asap! They print everything from pull up banners, flyers, promotional material, posters, business cards, basically anything you can think of, they can do. quite amazing in my opinion.

With a newborn in my life, I foresee keeping this place afloat by printing numerous photos of my little booger. Second, you can print passport and visa photos here. They can also take them for you, too. They're very familiar with the dimensions for HK, US, Canada, Australia, and other European ID photos. Staff are curt but they can quickly navigate the photo machines so you can send in your orders via your USB or whatever device you have. Typical wait is 30 minutes.

In Hong Kong, we have all these local shops in each neighborhood. There was one when I lived in North Point, and there was one in Wanchai. Here comes the one in the Mid-Levels. Yeah you wonder, how the hell they can sell you everything you need, with the size of the shop only 1/100th of Home Depot. Yeah that's the mystery I haven't actually solved, but I gladly take that as a fact. Shower head? You got it. That rubber covering the leg of a chair? Yes we have all different sizes and shapes. That something something that I can't even describe it, but here's a picture? Yup, no problem at all. And they have an all-in-one electrician/locksmith/plumber as well. Usually he's not in the shop, so you have to make an appointment with the lady at the shop. He would come anytime from 1 to 2 hours at usual hours. I don't think he's on call 24/7, so thankfully I never had to call him off working hours. And the service / accessories are reasonably cheap. Of course the price could go down another dollar or two in North Point, but that's probably not significant to most of us, but to them so I'd never mind paying for a fair price for a fair service.
