They had all the fruit pouches you could possibly need, which made things really convenient. It's also very close to F6 Hotel, so the location honestly couldn't be easier if you're staying nearby. The market itself is clean, well organized, and the staff are incredibly kind and helpful. Pro tip: don't forget to weigh the bananas before heading to checkout!

There's an escalator to get down there, and you have to rent a cart for a Euro. There's no fee for carrying around a basket. The produce section wasn't so great, but it did have the basic fruits and vegetables at reasonable prices. The dairy section was stocked with all kinds of weird cheeses I'd never seen before. One day when I went, they were sampling up the local cheeses in the aisle. Score! There's a large bakery section, with a huge variety of rye breads. Go for the ones with lumberjacks on them, or the one shaped like a cat for extra flavor. They also have a big selection of pre-made foods, like cassaroles, fish, meats, sausages, etc. If you wanna grab a bite to go, this is a popular spot. The fish selection was some of the best I'd seen in a supermarket- they must've had salmon prepared two dozen different ways. The beer selection is pretty primo too! They have mostly canned beers, but with a huge variety of beers from across Europe at discount prices. Many of them are kept cold, but the majority of the craft beers are kept warm. You can buy most of the beers as singles, or as 6+packs, so I chose to jump around with different local(ish) breweries that I'd never heard of. Finland's a cold place, the beer chills really quickly, so don't worry about them being sold warm. I've never seen such a licorice selection- they had all kinds of the local flavors and varieties. The local specialty is the salted licorice- they have some good examples of this in their huge selection of flavors and brands. It takes up about a quarter of an aisle. I think you get charged for a shopping bag, so you might try to save by bringing your own. The check-out lines were long, but it seems that they're (unsuccessfully) trying out a self-checkout system. In all, it's a great place to stop by near the train station for fresh or packaged foods!

Know what's awesome when you're in a new place and off by 10 hours?....A 24 hour market!…read more Located in the basement of a large building just down from the Ruoholahti metro station, this place was an absolute Mecca for us at 5 am when our kids had already been up for 2 hours! The place is set up like a Fred Meyer or Super Target in the states - they've got a full grocery store and a pretty solid department store as well. Many do the K-markets in the metro stations are smallish, but this one is BIG! The beverage, produce, meats, cheeses and pastry sections were all very large. Word to the wise - you can't buy any beer until after 9 am. The selection was as good as anything we've got back home and was great to be able to hit up any time of day! The prices were fair and everyone was very nice! We found out we needed to weigh fruits, veggies and pastries and you should too! It'll make the check out process a lot quicker . They've even got carts with kid cars attached - a popular thing to fight over for our guys! All in all, it's hard to beat a place like this when you come to visit from far away!

City Market has a good selection of cosmetics and their Lumene products are priced reasonably compared to Sokos and Stockmann. They have a good selection of health and eco foods as well as a good line of generic vitamins under their own brand that are very affordable and just as good as the pricier versions at the apteekis. They have a decent selection of rain boots if you're in a jam or looking for an inexpensive pair for summer cottage or other non-fashion purposes. The baby selection at this location is abysmal but they have better prices on children's books in both English and Finnish than the Stockmann bookstore or the other bookstore on corner of Aleksi. Good toy selection, too. The location is hopping day and night: avoid going during work hours or the evening or you will be stuck in line until you want to pull out your hair and poke out your eyeballs. Upside: groceries and home goods in one store, parking garage directly adjacent to the store, good location, easy access to several restaurants/cafes on the floor above...and you WILL be hungry after spending hours ambling around City K.

I like really good, really cheap food. Why? Because I am from this magical land called San Francisco where the cheap, delicious food:household ratio is skewed in favor of the food side. I digress. This Alepa has a few things going for it: Better croissants than Kanniston Leipomo down the block (€2.80 each) at around 1/8 the price...sorry, KL. They are open until 11 p.m. God bless you, Alepa! This location is the only Alepa I know of that carries my favorite soup from Amerrika. They carry gluten free bread. They have a lot of organic vegetables. They never run out Fazer Geisha bars. Downside: they run out of food really fast. The remodel seems to have reinvigorated shoppers and it can be very busy and a little understaffed between 5 and 7 p.m. Finnish people LOVE their chocolate wrapped in bread. God bless them but really? Meh. HOWEVER, a Rainbow croissant wrapped around a strip of Fazer dark chocolate is delicious. Toss in the oven for 2 minutes and for less than €1 you have a chocolate croissant that beats the €3-€6 sub-par chocolate croissants you'll find at local bakeries. AND you can say they were homemade ;) Plus- the cashiers always patiently allow me to stumble through my clumsy Finglish at the checkout line instead of just snapping at me in English :)
