After a full pandemic year…read moreof not having visited, what a respite of joy and curiosity to return for a brief visit to pick up another treasure to read. The woman who owns the shop is always quick for a thoughtful recommendation (or three) and after purchasing and devouring 5 or more of her recommendations, she hasn't missed once. Thanks for opening during the pandemic, even briefly. If you're in the SE, or even if you're not, absolutely worth a trip over here to explore and get something new to engage your mind!

Chess Club Art is a book, magazine, and zine store, a place for events, and they have a selection…read moreof chilled bottled water for sipping. A large portion of the periodicals they display are from outside the USA. We dwell on navel gazing. Look beyond the navel! If you are a creative person or in a creative profession, Chess Club should be a haunt. It is also a fine spot for gifts in the form of magazines. That would include expatriate creatives missing the latest from countries of the world. On the music side, they have a DJ setup and a retro sound system. Just like Devon Turnbull sampled Altec Lansing speakers of the 1960s with Ojas, Chess Club brings similar DIY speakers. Cultural explorers in art, fashion, architecture, design, and culture need inspiration and sources beyond our social envelope to move the world forward. Every once in a while you hear about a product that you just know is going to make a great gift -…read morefor yourself or others. And Im always looking for a fun gift idea. So when I heard Dave from 33 Books being interviewed on NPR I just knew I had to check it out. It's a great story too, which I condense below, and I promise is directionally correct if not totally exact. Man likes beer. Man decided to try a different beer every day for a year. Man forgets which beer he likes most (maybe testing too many?) Man creates a small "beer book" (as opposed to "black book") that he carries with him and makes notes on each beer in. Man gets requests from friends for their own books. Man can't get a smaller printing than 500 (? 1000?) Decides to go for it and print large number. Man gives some to friends and puts the remaining on-line for sale. Man finds sales go well and people ask for books for wine, cheese and chocolate too. And other things. Meanwhile man keeps day job. And wife. After a few years and other 33 books, many sales, and even some maps (wines of France) he takes the plunge and quits his "day job" to focus solely on 33 Books. Still has wife too. Sales continue to go well. He gets on NPR. Sales see big jump. Including from me. I got my books today. Yeah! I can't tell you about all of them because some are slated as small gifts for some select fellow Yelpers. But here are some specifics. Each book fits in your pocket easily. Or purse. You will need a writing utensil though. Come to think of it, be great if these came with one of those super thin pens you can get these days. Dave - hope you already thought of that. I added some pics so you can get an idea of what the booklets are. You can put in start and end dates. Each page is for a different beer, with different rating options - sweet or sour, malty, toffee, citrus etc. and how did it come - draft, bottle, can etc. and of course name and price. And section for notes, where, if you are like me and remember places by meals you add in that type of info. Or perhaps who you were enjoying it with. And of course a 5 star rating system (Yelp probably influenced that). The books are made from recycled paper and use soy based ink. The beer books all have a touch of California Common Brewed beer too. The wine books have a few drops of wine. You get the idea. This is a fun and creative product that's sure to please any recipient. Even if they won't use it they are sure to know someone who will. Go visit 33books.com and check out your options.

Prices on new books can be a bit high, which is typical, but there are often used options too. The service is usually fast and friendly. Try to come during non-peak times if you can because it does get very busy here, and there isn't a lot of room to move around. I love having an independent bookstore like Powell's in the metro area!

A number of people ahead of me also tried to use the voucher and rather than trying to help and speed the line through, this guy barked at us and if you happened to enter in the wrong information, he would throw a fit and make you feel guilty. Look man, I get you have a line of customers backed up because of these vouchers but your attitude really stunk to high hell and I will never, ever recommend people go to this store because of you, solely!

It's cool that they kept the sign but it is a little hard to realize this is now the Kinokuniya. They've got a wide array of items - including movies and books/manga, pens and stationary, stickers and charms, mystery boxes of various kinds, items related to popular media, decor, etc. It's fairly narrow aisles and a lot to look at. They have another location in Beaverton.

You can seriously spend hours perusing all the books and choosing your next read, coffee table book, or whatever your heart desires. My favorite section of the bookstore hands down was the Rare Book Room, a special temperature and humidity-controlled room filled with some of the coolest books I have ever laid eyes on. And yes, they are for sale! To me, the room felt alive as I stood in the presence of historical literature, just as when I stand in the presence of great artifacts at a museum. Access to the Rare Book Room is granted as long as you grab a pass, and no food, drink, or unpaid books/merchandise is allowed inside. You can spend as long as you like (as long as it's not crowded in the room), and there is also a staff member present to answer any questions you may have. Of course I had to purchase a book from Powell's, called Freeway Birding, San Francisco to Seattle (it was even signed)! As an avid birdwatcher, this was the perfect book to add to my ever-expanding library. I also grabbed one of their wooden postcards and a couple of stickers to commemorate our time spent at this amazing bookstore. While the entire store was bustling, even on a weekday in August, take your time at Powell's and get swept away by any and all genres of literature that call to you. It was within walking distance of our hotel in the Pearl District, so we didn't need to contend with parking. It's overwhelming at first - I had heard of how large it was, but you don't quite get the scope until you start walking through - here are books and people everywhere you look! You can just wander, or make a plan of attack and strategically try to visit every corner of the store. We kind of did a combination of both, and started at the top floor and worked our way back down to ground level. The prices are typical of an independent book store, but they had a nice selection of used books and some great value books to snap up, too. There is literally something for everyone. There are lots of local authors and books set in the region. There are bookmarks around each info station with suggested/popular reads for each section of the store. There was a nice selection of local and bookish items and gifts, too - totes, t-shirts, postcards, stickers, etc. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. I'll be stopping in any time I'm in Portland!
